So glad to have Body Pump back in my life : ) I really can’t even describe the effect the class has had on me. I’ve been doing group exercise on and off for years and have never enjoyed going to a class as much as this.
Do you know what I think the reason really is? The results. I really see them. My arms aren’t really any smaller – in fact, I think they’re bigger! But I definitely have muscles I never used to have and I can link 2x a week pumping directly to that.
I showered at the gym and biked my merry way down to the bakery –
It is a minor problem to arrive at a bakery that you own hungry from a hard workout. I tasted two quality control things – a Cheddar Garlic knot and a batch of scuffins that had a funky shape today (and we unfortunately couldn’t sell but will donate)
Now that dessert was taken care of, I ate lunch!
Last night’s salad base (making lunch while making dinner is an old secret of mine from my full-time employment days!) topped with the last of our leftover salmon, blue cheese and some cheddar cubes Matt had just cut up here at work and I dropped on top.
I was going to have this nectarine too, but Laurel convinced me that the rotten bottom and fruit fly presence in my home kitchen was not something I should eat, so I tossed it : (
Just finished up a conference call with GH and the rain is now coming down. Sadness!
Happy Weekend!!
Laura Jane @ Recovering Chocoholic says
It’s great to find workouts that you love! I’ve never tried body pump. I also do the prepare lunch while preparing dinner trick. It really saves time. I just put leftovers directly into a container that I would take for lunch. It must be a rough job having to taste all those things for quality control purposes! 🙂 If you ever need any help with that, I volunter. 🙂
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
There’s a window WAY ACROSS from my desk (across the hall and clear into the other office suite) and it looked dreary but I couldn’t tell if it was raining.
I am getting out an hour early today though so rain or not…wheee! happy weekend to you too, Kath!!!
Bridgette says
Hi Kath!
I am a body pump newbie and I am loving it!
I was soooo sore after the first class, so I have been keep the weight low for the first few weeks. I was wondering how much weight you normally use in the class? I need a goal since I am outta shape and all! haha
KathEats says
Well I use a different weight for every muscle.
I do 1 large, 1 medium and 1 small for squats (mostly because I have lower back issues and don’t want to press it – I square more on machines)
1 large, 1 small for chest (sometimes I use 1 large 1 medium!)
1 large, 1 med for back
1 large, 1 small for tris
1 large for biceps
2 10 pound handweights for lunges (I hate the bar on the back!!)
And a mix of mediums and small frees for shoulders
Hope that helps!
Bridgette says
Wow! You are awesome! I have only been in two weeks, so I have a ways to go 🙂 I also hateeee the bar on my back/neck too!
Thanks, that helpes alot!
KathEats says
I started with all mediums and smalls and grew to larges – you’ll get there soon!!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Make sure the bar is on the ‘meaty part’ of the back! It should be nowhere near the shoulders, actually. It also helps to make sure your elbows are right under the bar, instead of sticking out toward the front or back of the room.
I teach BodyPUMP and so I see this mistake a lot! I promise it helps 🙂
And yah, keep going and you will see results, good changes, and a lot more strength!
KathEats says
I’m pretty sure it’s meaty. And I sometimes use a hand towel rolled up and that helps.
Bridgette says
Yeah, I am pretty sure I put it in the right spot, b/c the instructor mentioned it. Its just not comfy to me. And oh yeah! I was not doing something right the first time b/c my elbows hurt so bad the next day! Haha
Thanks guys! So far I am really enjoying it!
Stacy R. says
I’ve been doing bodypump consistently now for 2 times a week for 3 weeks and it’s because you recommended it. It has changed my workouts and I feel amazingly strong! I’ve been noticing results and am feeling so much stronger!
The track I dislike the most- lunges UGH they KILL me ( I’m not a big runner so my legs are not super strong) and I feel so wobbly when I do them.
Thanks Kath! Keep rocking the workouts
Ashley O. @ The Vegetable Life says
I started pump a number of months back and there is nothing quite like seeing he results in my arms, back, and shoulders its amazing to have muscles Ive never seen on myself before.
All of the pics of your bakery all the time make we really want homemade bread!!!!
chloe @ 321delish says
I have yet to take a body pump class! I think I need to put it on this years bucket list!! haha
Susan (Oliepants) says
I love love love salmon salads! So perfect for lunch.
Michelle (The Runner's Plate) says
I NEED to get on this Body Pump wagon, but I’m pretty sure they don’t offer any classes in the city I live! grrrr. . . . Alaska!
I always prep my lunch while prepping dinner as well! I’m all about maximizing my time!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
Ha! I just ate a nectarine with a rotten bottom (that I cut off). Hope I survive 😉
Hannah says
Hey Kath!
You’ve been talking about body pump mucho lately and I was just wondering what your estimated calorie burn would be for a given class? I like to keep a big variety on the classes I take (one kick boxing, one weight lifting, one Zumba class a week with LOTS of yoga) and I wanted to compare calorie output. Thanks! Have a great weekend!
KathEats says
I have no idea. One reason I used to shy away from weight classes is because I wore a heart rate monitor and didn’t burn very many calories. You really have to look at it as another kind of exercise. I imagine my calorie burn during class is pretty low. I barely sweat and never get out of breath (maybe 1 or 2 times during class on a hard muscle) but AFTERWARDS I think is where all the benefit is. I definitely think my metabolism is faster!!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
It totally depends on the amount of weight you lift, how in shape you are, your body weight, and how challenging the class is for you.
When I was trained in BodyPUMP the presenter of Les Mills told us the average caloric burn is 400-700 calories per hour with an obvious increased caloric burn after the class (the other 23 hours of the day)! As an instructor (and having checked it out) I burn around 560 calories in the class and am always a sweaty mess at the end. Hope this helps 🙂
KathEats says
I would never believe Les’s stats – I also only burned about 150 in Zumba and that class is touted to burn 600+! (And I was moving pretty hard!) I have a really conservative approach to calorie burn in exercise, but I do agree that body shape + fitness can vary it greatly.
faith says
wait-when did you go to Zumba?!
KathEats says
I went a long time ago – in Charlotte
Olena (The Fit Gourmet) says
I weigh 135 lb and do fairly hardcore pump (a bit more weight than Kath). My monitor showed about 250 cal burned per 45 min class. Obviously, muscle work is not done for *immediate* calorie burn effect…
KathEats says
Good to know! That sounds accurate to me 🙂
Natalie says
Thanks for all the good info! Do y’all think it matters what time of day you do Body Pump? My gym mostly has Body Pump classes in the evenings and I love going! Do you think I still get the benefits for my metabolism rate if I go to sleep like 3 hours after class is over? Thanks!!!
KathEats says
Absolutely!! Eat a little protein before bed 🙂
Natalie says
Thanks for the quick response! Enjoy the weeding tonight! Y’all deserve some fun!
Natalie says
Wedding oops 🙂
Lauri (Redheadrecipes.com) says
We have fruit flies in our kitchen and our fruit isn’t even ‘ripe’ or ‘rotten’!! I swear, if I put a Fresh banana on the counter, the next morning we will have 10 fruit flies! It sucks because I have to keep my pretty fruit bowl in the microwave 🙁
Amelia says
I too love pump. You could probably say that I am addicted! Nothing has ever changed the shape of my body so quickly. Kevin even asked me the other day if I was flexing. When I told him “no”, he was like, “dang, I need to start working out”. 🙂
rumfunandsun says
I have to say fruit flies do not give you enough protein to validate eating them! 🙂
Monika @ Powered by Paprika says
What are scuffins?!
& that nectarine doesn’t look too hot.. probably a good thing that you didn’t eat it 😉
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
They’re a cross between scones and muffins! AKA delicious!! =D
Kate (What Kate is Cooking) says
If I’ve learned anything from watching shows about prison on TV, it’s that rotting fruit is best used to make hooch, not for eating 🙂
Tracey says
This made me laugh! 🙂
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
SO jealous I can’t find a Body Pump class in my area! My gym offers a similar class but it’s not exactly the same thing!
Sonia (the Mexigarian) says
I haven’t been to body pump in a couple months. I used to go every week but the class just got too crowded for me. :\ But when I did go, I loved the results and I felt so much stronger. Yay for strong tone arms, legs and strong core and back!
Laura @ prettylittlewords says
Ick ick ick! You are much more open-minded about your fruit than I am…I know it’s wasteful, but if the fruit isn’t in its prime (e.g. a little mushy, bad spots, etc.), I have a hard time eating it. Glad someone talked you out of this one, haha. Although mushy fruit is great for oatmeal, yog bowls and smoothies! 🙂
Jil @ Big City, Lil Kitchen says
I’ve still never done a group class…they slightly intimidate me. Body Pump sounds phenomenal though.
Amanda- The Nutritionist Reviews says
I’ve never tried pump but would really like to!
katie @KatieDid says
yay for building muscle! More muscle= faster metabolism= more scuffins!
Heather says
You are making me want something sweet even more. I have resisted all day so far at work but leaving work a little early today to make up for working this weekend, so think I am going to take the munchkins to get some ice cream. I wish we had GH near us because it all looks so tasty!
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
I’m loving Body Pump for the exact same reason! I must have plateaued when simply doing cardio and working muscles most days a wekk like I used to…but Body Pump has helped me come out of that! The full-body blasts really make a difference.
Alexandra says
Hi Kath,
Does Cville have a composting system or do you think you will ever start composting veggie and fruit scraps from the bakery and having nearby community gardens use the compost? I know the coordination to manage waste is a lot of work but I think it would be really cool to incorporate into your business later! 🙂
KathEats says
We don’t really throw away much at all, so I’m not sure it warrants a whole system, however, we ARE composting our coffee grounds!!! A customer is coordinating that for us. I didn’t want to put my fruit in there though..
Alexandra says
oh that’s great! 🙂 Yeah rotten fruit is pretty acidic
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
It is so gloomy here today. I need sunshine in my life! I hope you have a great afternoon!
Chad @ thebreakupnote says
Kath: The only person I know that can make tupperware look beautiful.
Miranda @ Working Mom Works Out says
You make me want to try it. Hmmm, maybe I will.
Cait's Plate says
Gah – It just started raining here too!! Just in time for the weekend 🙁
Lindsey says
It’s been rainy here too lately! Ruining my outdoor running plans and yard projects! Can’t wait for some hot summer days 🙂
Carol says
Yikes…too bad about your scuffins. At least you were able to donate them:)
Glad you got a great body pump class in and that you are noticing results! Have a great weekend!
Sophie says
Great job on the Body Pump, Kath! I did it for 2 years in a row myself and loved it. Now I do bootcamp, yoga, and running (I don’t do Bodypump b/c I’m not going the gym anymore) but I miss a good pumping class!
Question for you — what do you dress your salads with? Do you pre-make dressings or just sprinkle oil/salt/whatever else on top?
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
BodyPUMP is the best at delivering results 🙂
kris (everyday oats) says
I’ve heard nothing but great things about bodypump! perhaps I should go try it out. I just need to figure out where it’s offered first…
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Poor nectarine! I haven’t had a fresh one yet and I LOVE them! Especially the white ones… and white peaches? Ohhh yes!
J3nn(Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
Yeah, good call on the nectarine. Time to return it to the earth. 🙂
mtnbluebird says
We don’t have Body Pump in our area (Idaho) but we do have something called ‘Pump It’ at our fitness facilty. I’ll have to check out Body Pump to see if these two ar similar. If they are, I’m signing up for a 5:15 a.m. class 2x a week! I need to shake up my routine that I have going on with the weight machines and this may be just the ticket.
Justeen @ Blissful Baking says
I love Body Pump too! I was never too crazy about group exercise either, but Body Pump never seems to get old!
Sana says
I am a huge group fitness fan, I love all the positive energy!
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
Not being able to sell food but can donate it..that is so awesome, Kath!
And that nectarine, ok I admit, I would have cut it up and thrown it into a blender along w/ other smoothie ingredients and just eaten it. lol Well, maybe not, but I admit to using up some really borderline fruit 🙂
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
I am with you on the weight-lifting love. One of the Real Housewives of Atlanta told me I had great biceps. Not that I watch that trash… 🙂
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
I love weights and “bulking up” with muscles–not the bodybuilder way, but the feminine strong way 🙂 I say that when in doubt with fruit, Juice it up! 🙂
Kiran says
Kath, please send the rain my way. We all desperately need it 🙂
Cait @ Urban Fencepost says
I do a similar class at my gym and love it too! It’s crazy how much you can see and feel the results! It’s also cool when you have to start using heavier weights because you get stronger!
Christine (The Raw Project) says
The class sounds great and makes me want to get into more classes, glad you’re seeing results!
kaila @ healthy helper! says
I wish I could get into body pump! Everyone raves about it but I just find it boring and repetitive 🙁
To each her own though!!! 🙂
Sarah says
Hello-I started reading your blog a little bit ago and I love it. Congrats on your new business-I have family in Charlottesville and love that area of VA. I wanted to comment about your idea of packing your lunch while making dinner-what a great idea. So simple and I’ve never thought of it-thanks! 🙂
KathEats says
Thanks Sarah!
Molly @ RDexposed says
Making my leftovers into a salad for lunch is my new favorite thing!
During my internship I’d prepare breakfast and lunch while making dinner!
Carey @ Positively Blonde says
I am constantly using last night’s leftover for my lunch. But I usually do it the other way around. Salad for dinner and turn it into a sandwich for lunch 🙂
Gina (Yogattude) says
I’ve started making my lunches while prepping dinner in the past couple weeks…saves so.much.time!
Paige @Running Around Normal says
That salad sounds delicious!
I did the body pump thing for a while, but I really prefer heavier weights and 12 reps – max – for each exercise.
Sylvia @ My Attempt at Balanced Living says
Left a shout out to you for Biscoff cookies on my blog today 😀 I thought it was funny that I only ever see them on planes but in my favorite cafe here in Korea, they’re complimentary with the coffee.

KathEats says
Mmmm love those!
kate says
I went to GH in Wayne, Pa today….so inspired by your blogging. I told the lady I follow a blog and before I could say anymore, she said “oh yeah, Kath and Matt”. It was kinda funny.( i forgot her name). Im glad it freezes well, because it was a little over an hour from Lancaster, Pa where i live. Oh, and I love Body Pump also.
KathEats says
Haha – awesome!!
Carie @ no dieting says
I want to come do quality control at the bakery!
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
I will gladly take some of those oddly shaped baked goods off your hands for you.
lynn @ the actor's diet says
grrrr fruit flies!!!
Melissa says
Reading about your results from taking Body Pump classes is really encouraging. I just started about two weeks ago. I go twice a week along with one spin class a week. I was in much pain after the first week, but feeling okay, now. Question: Do you actually get full off of all those salads? They never seem to fill me up. I recently tried your overnight oats, and I love them. Thanks for the idea!
KathEats says
Yeah, this one was rather large.
Eliza says
Just saw your Open Sky ad on TMZ. Had to pop by and let you know if you didn’t know already.
KathEats says
Niceee!!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I’ve never done Body Pump, but I’ve been getting back into doing strength training lately so I really want to give it a try!
Katie says
It seems like everyone’s doing body pump. I’m thinking I should look into it 🙂 I started kettlebell training a few months ago and love it … for the same reasons you love body pump. RESULTS. Do you always take body pump at the gym? Do you ever do it at home with a DVD?
We have GH that sets up shot at our local farmer’s market… always makes me think of you and Matt. BTW … they have the best peach muffins 🙂
Angel7 says
The shelves of bread look delicious! I can only imagine how wonderful your store smells when you walk in the door.
I bet you love the quality control aspect of owning a business 🙂

Kristen @ The Red Velvet Life says
I’m so excited to get back into Bodypump, too! I used to do it in TX, we didn’t have it at my gym in SF, but we have it at our new gym in LA! SUPER excited to see some results and become stronger! And the salmon salad looks delicious! 🙂
Khushboo says
I love body pump but there are no classes around where I live! i have been incorporating strength training in my workouts over the last 2 weeks and can def already feel/see the difference! It really is more about the post-workout burn!
Lorin says
I go to 24 hour fitness and they have body pump. I’ve never tried it but now that I’m home from college, I definitely will. In fact, I’ll be going on Tuesday. I’m pretty strong but I think I’ll be taking it easy for the first class because I have no idea how much weight I need to put on or any of the moves. I don’t like group classes very much, but I slack on weight training so I think this will keep me entertained, plus I’ve heard so many great things about it!
Abby says
Is Body Pump twice a week as much strength training as you do or do you incorporate things on your own too?
KathEats says
Yes, that’s all I do. It seems to be enough to build some good muscle. Any more often and I don’t think I’d have enough recovery time
Hannah says
That salmon still looks fabulous!
Katherina @ Zephyr Runs says
I miss pump class so much – your posts make it even worse! I cut gyms out of my life recently as a way to save money, which will only be necessary for a few more months…can’t wait to get back! Yes please don’t eat things you’re sharing with fruit flies!
Flourchild says
We just joined Golds gym about a month ago and they have a Body Pump classs. Im going to take one this week, thanks to you! I lift with my husband three days a week so will see how this fits in! Im excited!
'laina says
Morning, Kath. I was just curious- why can’t you sell funky shaped scuffins? I would think it would add to the “home-made” feeling that Great Harvest gives. 🙂
KathEats says
I’ts just a quality thing – they weren’t just funny shaped – they were really flat and not something I would want to buy
Charise says
I always pack lunch while making dinner. In fact, I plan my meals for 4 servings, so the husband and I always have the leftover for the next day. Makes it so easy, and more economical!
