^^Now that was an amazing Blue Apron dish! Mexican Spiced Salmon with Black Rice, Avocado & Orange Salad. See how I made it below!
Blue Apron Sustainable Seafood
But first, all about sockeye salmon!
Blue Apron is always working on ways to make its ingredients healthier and sustainable, and now all of its seafood is sourced sustainably and the majority is wild-caught. Blue Apron has partnered with the gold standard for third party sustainable fishing practices – the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch – to ensure it is delivering the best quality ingredients to its customers. That means wild-caught fish when that is preferred and farmed when recommended as the best choice. They source seafood sourced from fishing methods that are minimally invasive to natural habitats and do not source species that are overfished. Moreover, seafood is always raised within natural ecosystems or sustainable farms, on a diet free of antibiotics and added hormones.
Did you know the origin of the name Sockeye Salmon? It has little to do with the fish’s eyes, but rather comes from its Native American name, “suk-kegh,” which means “red fish.” Blue Apron’s Alaskan Sockeye Salmon is wild-caught, sustainably sourced and has earned a “Best Choice” rating from Seafood Watch. It’s one of my favorite foods!
This dish was great, and was a breeze to prepare (especially since I used my rice cooker!) Loved the combo of avocado, orange and pumpkin seeds in the rice salad.
If you’re a regular reader Blue Apron isn’t new to you, but for those who might have missed the fine print, here’s how it works:
- Schedule a delivery for either 2 people or a Family Plan.
- All ingredients and fancy recipes are delivered to your doorstep in a refrigerated box. (This time of year you probably don’t need ice! Ha!)
- There’s no trip to the grocery store required – everything you need is in the box.
- Spend less than 40 minutes making a made-from-scratch delicious dinner!
I have been working with Blue Apron for over a year now, and I like it more and more as time goes on!

If you are a seafood lover, you’ll be glad to know Timbercreek Market is adding seafood to the market in just a few weeks sourced by the current executive chef at Public Fish & Oyster. Should be pretty great!

I see so many people talk about Blue Apron, and other meal services and they certainly intrigue me. I like the idea of trying something that is likely different than my standard go-to meals. One day I suppose I will have to give in to my curiosity and try the program!
