We woke up to big bursts of thunder this morning. Along with torrential rain.
No Tuesday AM run for me.
Also a sad collection of dark oatmeal photos.
“You know you’re a food blogger when…”
…You go outside in your pajamas in a thunderstorm trying to find a small bit of natural light.
Today’s oats were great – a mix of Scottish and rolled that was a creamy porridge.
The Mix
- 2 tbsp Scottish oats + 2 tbsp rolled oats (= one serving. Scottish oats have a small dry portion size)
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1/2 banana
- Pinch salt (actually, wait, I forgot the salt!! That’s probably why they were so bland today..)
- Uncle Sam cereal crunch
- Blob ‘O jam
- Sunflower butter
- Coconut
Porch light glare-flavored coffee
I can handle a rainy day when the weekend forecast looks great!
Evan says
Fingers crossed that it clears up by the weekend! Here in CT, we’re destined for 10 days of rain. Hello, Noah’s Ark, part II.
I love that you’re a believer in a pinch of salt + oats…it really makes the difference and makes the flavors pop.
Lisa Fine says
Yeah, in MA we have a very sad outlook with the weather forecast. I’ll run in the rain, but not in a thunderstorm, but it definitely feels more like a day to watch a movie and stay inside.
Karen says
I feel your pain, all…in Chicago it’s been cold, windy and rainy for days on end. Today we have sun, but the temp is stuck in the 50s and “breezy” is putting it mildly. A very anti-climatic spring, huh?
Miranda @ Working Mom Works Out says
Hahaha. I’ve totally done that.
Boo to rain. We’ve got cold weather here… In Alabama… In MAY!!!
Katherina says
Haha I do that, I’ll take pictures on the ground outside. Weather like that may put a dent in your plans, but isn’t it nice? I love thunderstorms!!
I’ve never tried a pinch of salt in oats, but every recipe I have calls for a “pinch of salt” so there must be a reason. I’ll try this a.m. and see what’s up!
Julie H. says
Had my first dough boy this morning…. Wonderful, I added TONS of ice to bulk it up a lot! Super wonderful!!!
KathEats says
Woo!
Khushboo says
1. Rainy days are only fun when you can stay at home all day in your pjs and watch movies!
Tessa @ Amazing Asset says
Rainy days really are no fun for the most part, unless you have nothin to do and all day to do it! I am jealous of your weekend forecast, dreary rain is predicted around my area 🙁
Ahh well, going to make the best of it!
Nikita says
Here in Portland we get a lot of rain- mostly drizzle- but rarely thunderstorms. I grew up in the midwest where we got wicked thunderstorms and thats actually something I really miss!
Laura Jane @ Recovering Chocoholic says
We have rain in the forecast every day for the next 10 days!! It feels like it will never stop raining. I think the husband thought I was crazy recently when I took my plate of food outside to photograph it! You can’t get a good picture in artificial light. (Or if you are me, you really can’t get a great in any light. 🙂 I wish I could take great pictures. Do you have any posts where you’ve talked about how you take pictures?
KathEats says
I haven’t done much on photograph, but Ashley at Edible Perspective has done some with tripods and all
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
Looks like you have all the rain that we had last week! It is sunny here today so that means sun is on the way to you!
Freya (Brit Chick Runs) says
Eek it looks wet! Probably means England will get it – someone told me once that whatever weather the US on the east coast has, England gets a few days later. Bah! I don’t want torrential rain :'(
Angel7 says
The Blob ‘O Jam looks good! It adds color to the bowl 🙂
http://faithfulsolutions.blogspot.com/
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
That jam looks so perfect! Hope the weather turns around for you today!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
Looks like the perfect day to stay in bed under the covers! 🙂 Small serving sizes of the more dense grains always disappoint me.
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
I have actually wait to make dished until the weather is nice enough to get a good pic. *dork* LOL!
Hannah says
Absolutely! Or “when you don’t eat the last pieces of delicious raw biscotti because it’s dark when you get home at 5:30pm and you have to wait for morning light for photos”.
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I hear ya on the gloomy rain – we’ve been getting the same for the past 2 weeks, but this weekend (thank goodness) is looking better. I totally hear ya on the going outside in your pj’s… In the winter it was too cold and I couldn’t be bothered, but lately I’ve been starting to do the same!
Selena says
We have the same forcast here in DE. Its much easier to deal with a rainy week when my days off for the 10 year anniversary getaway with the husband looks so nice.
I finally got a loaf of Dakota…just as my whole wheat cinnamon chip was running out too. What’s your favorite way to eat the Dakota? I was thinking of smearing some hummus on it and having that with a green salad.
KathEats says
All GH bread is best with PB & J 🙂
Christine says
So true!
I picked up Whole Grain Goodness last week and made a couple amazing almond butter/strawberry jam sanndwiches.
I need some jam suggestions, can you send me your favorites? thnx
KathEats says
My very favorite is the GH jam – sold in the stores. The raspberry is incredible! Nice and chunky. I also like Crofter’s Superfruit American and anything made by hand like Jam According to Daniel.
Kelly says
Your green bowl is so pretty! And no, you didn’t send me your copy of The Help. You asked if anyone wanted it when we met for dinner with a group when you were passing through Charlotte months and months ago. I took you up on the offer and I’m so glad I did because it was a really great book and I can’t wait to see the movie when it comes out.
KathEats says
Riiiiiiiiiiiight!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I laugh at myself all the time when I think about what I do to get a good shot of my food. It’s kinda crazy, but a lot of fun! I hope you have a great day Kath!
Sara R. says
The rain ruined my plans for a morning jog too…AND I discovered this morning that my treadmill is apparently broken 🙁 Hopefully we’ll both find another way to get our runs in today!
Val @ Balancing Val says
I only have a spec of natural light in my apartment so when it rains im done for!
I cant even go on the “shared” porch to take photos either.
I do my best with a ghetto light set up 😉
Christie {Nourishing Circle} says
Hahaha, totally relate to the PJ’s in the rain on the porch statement!
Grace @ Healthy Dreaming says
I’m in Tampa so I look forward to rainy days if it means less humid days following it.
Breakfast looks yummy as usual!
Lucy @ The Sweet Touch says
We are finally getting some sunshine here but I can feel your pain on the rain! I heard all of this rain is going to drive up the cost of groceries and I am already starting to notice it – has anyone else seen prices go up? Guess I have to get more creative with my meal planning!
megan @ whatmegansmaking says
Hi Kath, just wanted to say that I absolutely LOVE Redeeming Love and I hope you do as well. Such wonderful parallels to the book of Hosea. A seriously gripping story. 🙂 Hope you’ll let us know your thoughts when you’re done!
Gina @Runningtothekitchen says
I hear ya! It’s now been raining for 3 days in a row and there is no end in sight in the forecast. The rain was so loud this morning it woke me up. But, it did inspire me to make pancakes! Usually, not a weekday treat for me 🙂
Marie@feedingfive says
I have been wondering about this forever. Do you ever top your oats with milk or is all that liquid used for cooking? I can’t imagine not topping mine every morning with milk. Just curious.
KathEats says
It’s all in the cooking!
Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food says
haha you’re too funny out in your pjs! 🙂
I can’t wait until we move out of our garden apt so I can have a little natural light for my food photography! 🙂
Hope says
It’s supposed to rain every single day this week here. 🙁 I’m hoping it clears up by the weekend! Rain everyday is no fun. Beautiful looking oats though! 🙂
Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me says
I would much rather have it rain during the week while I’m at work rather than the weekend! It’s been dreary in my neck of the woods for over a week and is going to continue the rest of the week!
Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) says
“…You go outside in your pajamas in a thunderstorm trying to find a small bit of natural light.”
YES!!!
Or you bring your magic bullet with you when traveling, only b/c you’re too scared to lug your vitamix and possibly damage it. But you may just “have” to make something in it that just cant wait til you get home. Yep. guilty as charged 🙂
Have a great day, Kath!
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
The rain was kind of nice this morning… I made it to the gym in between the rain. Your breakfast looks amazing as always. I’m thinking we might make a special trip up to your GHB when it opens. We aren’t too far from you!
JGago @ Eat, Drink and Be Merry! says
I said the same thing last night! The forecast in San Diego today is rainy, but the weekend is supposed to be warm and sunny. I just hope I have enough time to relax and enjoy it!
Those oats look delish! By the way, do you use unsweetened coconut or regular?
KathEats says
I use regular. Unsweetened was just a bit bland for me
kaila @ healthyhelper blog! says
We have rain in the forecast for the next ten days straight…not excited!
Kristin @ STUFT Mama says
Kath- your pictures (and your oatmeal) ALWAYS look great! The weather is a little dreary here in San Diego too which is not a usual thing for May. I’m contemplating keeping my pajamas on for awhile. Hmm…..
Kate (What Kate is Cooking) says
It’s drizzling here too! The weather forecast isn’t great for the weekend, but I’m going out of town and it will be nice and hot 🙂
Hilary says
Lookin’ good on the oats….love your “quest” for natural light…too funny!
Heather says
I was able to go for a run this morning before the rain comes later today.
I don’t think the weather is going to be nice here this weekend unfortunately…I wish it was!
Alyssa says

Natalie @ Will Jog For Food says
I could use a hot bowl of oatmeal right now, my office is FREEZING!
Melissa says
It was torrential this morning, wasn’t it? I wore a skirt to work and had to dry my legs off after walking in! I hope it stays clear for an afternoon run for me today!
Chelsea says
I heard Virginia was going to be getting tons of rain with potential chances of flooding! Yummy looking oatmeal!
Susan says
It’s pouring in Sonoma County, too! What’s going on?
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
Hahah..during bad weather, I use the window sill. True devotion to go outside in a thunderstorm! But.. it doesn’t surprised me because your blog is amazing.
klm says
I love thunder!

Alaina says
It’s been raining for the last 5 days and it doesn’t look to be letting up until the weekend, here in MA. I’m longing for the sun! It better be nice by the half marathon. 🙂
mel says
hey Kath! I live in OH but my fam is in KY and came to visit last weekend. They brought me ww great harvest bread (sooo good!!) and almond/cranberry oatmeal. The oatmeal was so good and I was wondering since you are an oatmeal goddess if y’all are having oatmeal in your store?
KathEats says
Yup!! The oatmeal mixes are awesome too!

I am always cursing my poorly-lit apartment! Some day when I grow up I will be able to buy more lamps 😉
Jenny (Fit Girl Foodie) says
Those oats look delicious! I’ve never added salt to mine, I didn’t know not adding salt made them bland!
Laura @Foodsnobstl says
I cannot believe that 4tbsp of oats ends up being that much!
KathEats says
Well like I said, the Scottish oats have a smaller portion size dry but they absorb more water. I made this actually for two people – 1/4 cup Scottish and 1/4 cup Rolled.
Linda Brewer says
The oats look divine, rainy day notwithstanding! We’ve sure had our share of it here in Nashville! Rainy days make me want to bake, and you have inspired me with oats… what can I stir up today? What’s your favorite oat baked good?
