No, I wasn’t drinking a cocktail with breakfast
But our MILK is BAD! Not in the sour clumpy way, but in a really, really bitter chemically way. I must have drank 1/4 a cup of it before realizing that the taste wasn’t my imagination. BLARG! My tongue has not recovered. The date on the carton says 10/16/10 and we did buy it from a really small store that probably has a low turnover. Perhaps we just bought it on the old side? I’m not too quick to blame the grass-fed brand.
Ironically, today’s breakfast was all about making my PERFECT bowl of oatmeal!
If I had to list my very favorite components in addition to a whipped banana chia base, they would be:
- Pumpkin
- Cottage cheese
- Sticky peanut butter
- Pumpkin butter (or a jam)
- Granola
- Coconut
For the first time in ages, I have them all on hand!
The Superb Mix
- 1/4 cup homemade scottish oats
- 2 tbsp rolled oats
- 1/4 cup milk (yes, it was added, but the bitter taste was hidden enough to be OK)
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
- 1/2 banana
- Pinch salt
- Splash vanilla
- Sprinkle cinnamon
- 1/4 cup pumpkin, stirred in at end
- 1/4 cup cottage cheese, stirred in at end
- The above mentioned toppings!
We used a drop of heavy cream in our coffees because the milk is now off limits. It was good!
Today is an active rest day. Meaning I’m not doing any kind of formal workout – just probably some biking for transportation or a walk for the scenery. Probably yoga too! I was going to go to an Ashtanga class, but I think I’ll just do some stretching here instead to save time.
We’re going to see my sister’s boyfriend’s sister’s soccer game too!
Baaaa
Katherine says
I have such a dumb question that I’ve been wanting to ask for a while – are the oats raw? So your whole concoction is cold? Or is it cooked somewhere along the way?
Kath says
No no – cooked on the stovetop! See the Tribute To Oatmeal page for the whipped banana method.
Katherine says
Got it, thanks!
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
I love putting a little heavy cream in my coffee 🙂 So rich and delicious 🙂
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
Yuck, soured milk is the worst! At least it didn’t ruin your oats though!
rebecca lustig says
i drank bad oj a few weeks ago. my tongue and stomach hated me for the rest of the day!! hope recovery goes well 🙂
lovin the combo. it is pretty perfect
Nicole - yuppie yogini says
Ewww…spoiled milk is the worst. At least you discovered it before ruining your oats or coffee. Love the sheep-so cute!
Peggy says
Those oats sound phenomenal! Have a good resting day!
Natalia - a side of simple says
Oh gosh, Kath, I just adore all your oatmeal pictures. Seriously, they’re so great 😉
Tracy says
I recently started adding cream to my coffee too, just a little drop makes such a big difference! Not sure if I can ever go back to regular old milk …
Sarah B. says
When I was little, I once ate a whole bowl of cereal with sour milk. When my dad told me that the milk was bad I said “I thought it tasted weird.” 🙂
Scott Ripley says
Hi Kath,
I’ve been a fan of yours for a while, but this is my first comment. Please take a look at this remarkable book: http://www.amazon.com/Milk-Z-Robert-Cohen/dp/0965919684
It will forever change the way you look at milk.
Here’s what American Dairy Farmer magazine printed about the author, in OCT 1998:
“Is Robert Cohen an enigma? Maybe. What’s important is that he knows his enemy well — far better than we know ourselves. I have two lasting impressions. One is that underestimating Robert Cohen’s ability to damage the dairy industry is a big mistake. The other is a profound wish that the man was on our side.”
Here’s to your health!
Clare says
Kath; I’d be really curious to hear your thoughts on this. I know you eat a lot of dairy. What is a dietitian’s position on milk vs. non-dairy sources of calcium? I’m a big fan of all your beautiful plant-based meals ( I know you eat a little meat) but I have to admit that I question the dairy which I view as an unhealthy food. I ask in a respectful way, obviously I wouldn’t be reading if I didn’t genuinely enjoy your site 🙂
Kath says
Clare,
While I haven’t spent hours researching dairy (and even research can be biased in both ways), I think the benefits outweigh any negatives. The fact that most Europeans have evolved to digest via lactase and absorb high quality protein from dairy says to me that it is an appropriate food that was selected for as nutrient dense. The acidifying properties may be true, but that’s why one should ALSO eat plenty of alkalizing foods (and perhaps MORE greens than animal products). I think they balance each other out to an equilibrium. So for me, the fact that I can eat yogurt + milk + cheese and get such high quality protein outweighs any acidifying effects. I wouldn’t tell anyone to eat only dairy – but some is better than none, in my opinion (I also almost always buy organic/local dairy products. The industry issues are a whole other story).

Clare says
Thank you. Great info. about the Europeans; I didn’t know that! You always hear about the large populations that are lactose INtolerant. Totally agree re: greens. Go Kale!
Camille says
I love your little sheep icon 🙂
My boyfriend and I were just saying yesterday that we want to move to the Irish Countryside and become sheep herders for a living. Seriously. 🙂

Jo @JAGSfitnessblog.com says
Your oatmeal looks AMAZING! I’ve never thought to add cottage cheese to oats (probably because I can’t stand the stuff on its own but like it in other foods) but might give it a try 🙂
Krystina (Organically Me) says
That sticky peanut butter looks amazing and gooey! Enjoy yoga. 😀
Erika @ Food, Fitness, & Fun says
Mmmm. I am such a sucker for your oatmeal creations! Delicous. 😀
Michelle (The Runner's Plate) says
I love how long your list of ingredients is for your oats. Anytime I make oats, I have about 50 different things in it, but that’s what makes it so good!!
lisasfoods says
I find that organic milk goes off much faster than conventional, but I always consider that a good thing. I’m looking forward to when organic milk (and free range) is more common, so that it’s sold in smaller containers, though I have shared milk with my neighbor before.
The Wife of a Dairyman says
I’m wondering if your milk was oxidized…..which tastes horrible! I have a link on my site that helps you to avoid buying oxidized milk, because many people do not realize that it can become oxidized: http://thewifeofadairyman.blogspot.com/2010/09/milk-buying-tip-how-to-avoid-buying.html
On a different note, it could be the grass fed cows, depending on what the farmer feeds the cows. For instance, I know that some farmers feed their cows onions.
Kath says
It was in a carton, but maybe that was the problem. It wasn’t sour – just chemically bitter
The Wife of a Dairyman says
It should have been safe from oxidation if it was in a carton….but even my 4 year old notices the taste difference if we happen to buy oxidized milk….it’s amazing the difference in taste.
holly @ couchpotatoathlete says
That little sheep is so freakin cute 🙂
Too bad about the milk. We don’t drink milk, but when I was younger, I remember opening up a gallon of milk and the smell just about knocked me over. Spoiled milk is the worst. Blech!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
ewww i know the sour milk feeling… it’s terrible and your tongue feels like it’s been assaulted. have a great sunday afternoon at the soccer game! 🙂
Claire (Low Impact Fashionista) says
I have drank milk with actual chunks in it before. Not. Fun. Blehhh but at least your oats were salvaged!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
yucky about the milk. that happened to my husband the other day with an organic brand. he blamed it on the coffee!
Erin @ Shortcut to Bliss says
This is completely off topic, but I saw your “Eat Real Food” poster on my Etsy Finds e-mail this morning. Pretty Cool.
Kath says
Oh fun!
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
I had a bitter experience with grape juice the other day. Pretty sure it was the cup I was drinking it out of. Bad chemical reaction?
Nelly@CrazySexyFit says
Cream in coffee is the BEST. It’s rich enough to balance the bitterness of the beans without using too much, so the coffee stays hot, and it just feels so incredibly decadent! 🙂
Meagan says
That’s a bummer about the milk. I’m glad you don’t judge the grassfed brand on that 🙂
j says
I’m so excited! I just bought 4 sugar pumpkins and can’t wait to try your roasting/risotto recipe!

Maddie says
Yum! That looks like a great bowl of oats. Would greek yogurt give the same effect as cottage cheese?
Sorry about your sour milk. I hate when that happens.
Kath says
I don’t think greek yogurt would work – I fear it would curdle!
Mastering Public Health (@MasPublicHealth) says
Back in my dairy-eating days I always put 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt in my oats and it was excellent! Then again, I cooked the oats the night before and refrigerated them, so I’m not sure about any potential hot-temperature issues.
hannah says
We must try this sometime!
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
Blech, sorry bout the sorry milk! That couldn’t have been good :S
Gree says
That bowl of oatmeal looks pretty darn good..pumpkin and peanut butter are two of my favorites as well. I will admit now that we don’t eat as much dairy I prefer almond milk in my coffee, and it doesn’t go bad as quickly!
Hannah says
Your blog honestly has power over my mind. I haven’t really liked coconut in years but I’m obsessed with going and buying some for oatmeal now!
