What’s worse than sitting next to a person eating an onion sandwich on a flight?
Eating one yourself…
Hard to believe we’ve lost a whole day of our lives to travel today. Kinda sad how fast time moves when you’re flying through time zones.
Other than long lines and congestion, we made it to the airport with enough time to grab some snacks for lunch (although I always have bars and fruit in case we don’t!)
Being on an airplane is one of those time I wish I didn’t have to photograph for the blog. Getting a giant camera with a short-frame lens out from under the seat with a tray table down is quite the production. So this trip, I put my jacket down as a tablecloth and took a tablescape photo before we boarded. Sweet!
All you see above is healthy travel food lunch picnic for two.
First off, I mixed a packet of Amazing Grass berry into a water bottle (this is the only time I purchase water bottles – I always have my reusable with me for regular water but it’s hard to get the wheat grass taste out of those)
I don’t really like the way this tastes in a bottle, but it’s mentally pleasing to drink and a good way to feel like you’re getting something green when boxed salads are $10 a piece.

The main part of lunch was a Thai Tofu Wrap. I was going to get a delicious looking spinach and red pepper wrap but at last minute I saw the ingredient list had raw red onion. #fail. So I grabbed this one instead. It sounded good! I did note the cooked veggies, but cooked onions can be eaten around.
Not so much. They were hardly cooked and while I did my best to fork-pick them out and I have had onion breath the ENTIRE flight. Blaaaah. I can’t get rid of it, even with Altoids and fruit!
The wrap (which I shared with Matt) was good other than the onions. The smoked tofu was my favorite!
Also shared was a vanilla bean yogurt with the last of the Frog Hollow Granola which we combined with the fruit cup I had from Starbucks breakfast for a really good parfait!
Annnnnd an apple. It was a good lunch! (That banana is for tomorrow’s breakfast 🙂 Always grab one from the airport if your pantry is empty!)
I also have bars galore and Gina’s Macaroons left! Perhaps these will come into play for dinner or dessert on the next flight?
We’re in Kansas City, MO right now (YAY more free Wifi! The world is becoming more and more blogger friendly!) I think this is the second smallest airport I’ve been in though (the first being Syracuse – where I was for 6 hours on a business trip during my 24th birthday and it sucked). I just went out looking for some dinner and found a brew pub, a Starbucks and some soggy sandwiches. I think I will be having macaroons for dinner after all!
Almost time to begin leg #2 of 3 on our journey to Charlottesville. Don’t forget about the 2.5 hour midnight drive ahead.
Really, really excited about seeing our house again. And doing laundry. I always get nervous that something broke while we were gone, so I hope it’s a happy reunion!
Lisa says
I usually make Amazing Grass shakes with some yogurt and a banana….I can’t imagine just mixing it with water!!
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
I took a picture of my plane snacks on the plane home from SF…some of the weirdest looks I’ve ever gotten!! You definitely travel prepared! I’m hoping Gina’s macaroons can jump through the screen at me…
Sana says
You will be so happy when you get home! Eat the macaroon’s on the plane! I ate Gina’s on the flight home from HLS and it was pure bliss!
Hannah says
How sad about the onion! You should definitely use the Macaroon to cheer yourself up after the traumatic onion experience 😉
KatieF says
Don’t knock Syracuse! It’s my hometown and is a wonderful place, actually.
Kath says
Of course! But you can’t deny the airport is small!
KatieF says
True…Panama City’s is smaller, though. I think they only have 4 gates!
Ella @ The Princess and the P says
Ditto!! But you have to admit – Hancock “International” Airport is kind of a joke. Hope you’re living somewhere warmer now 😀
KathyZS says
Hancock lacks big time in concessions so I feel your pain in having to spend 6 hours there. The smallest airport I have ever been is is Albany, I think the have two gates.
Lauren at KeepItSweet says
i am always so happy to have packed snacks when i travel – although last time i was at JFK i was thrilled because they have a brand new food court with great stations AND a salad bar
Erica says
Do you ever get weird looks when drinking Wheat Grass in public? I think I may have made a few people nauseas before with a similar looking bottle of water. Haha.
Lily @ Lily's Health Pad says
I have spent a ridiculous amount of my life in the KC airport! It’s come a looooooooon way. 🙂
Caitlyn (A Spoonful of Life) says
Onion breath is not cool. Just think though, if you got stuck next to someone rude on the plane, you could start talking to them and they might try to change seats! Gross? Yes. Effective? Maybe!
Hope the rest of your trip goes smoothly. You’ll be home before you know it.
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
That is quite the trip! I haven’t done a long flight in so long! I hate spending that kind of money for airport food too! I always pack a boat load of goodies! Have a safe trip Kath!
Joshua @ Healthy Cultivations says
I’ve done a fair amount of traveling for work, and I’ve found that onion breath is the worst! Garlic isn’t much better either. The thai tofu wrap does sound good though. Safe travels!
Brie @ Brie Fit says
Aww, welcome to my town! I live about 10 minutes from the airport…too bad you don’t have a layover or I’d show you the city!
The KC airport is so easy to navigate. I travel for work a ton, and it never takes more than 10 minutes to get from car to my gate. I love it! The food options are slim, though…but I usually pack something in my purse anyway.
Brie @ Brie Fit says
Although, if you’re in the terminal with the Boulevard brew pub…it’s worth stopping in for a beer! Boulevard is a local KC beer and they have some delicious brews. If you like a good porter, their Bully Porter is excellent, as is their Lunar Ale. (I like all of it, actually!)
CJ says
Ah – so glad I’m not the only one who has irrational fears about things breaking or other mishaps whenever I’m travelling home. It’s never happened, but I usually stress that a water pipe will have burst or my upstairs neighbour will have flooded the apartment or someone broke in. Completely irrational!
Simply Life says
Safe travels- looks like you’re eating better than my random bars and fruit when I travel! 🙂
Christin@purplebirdblog says
Whenever I go out of town I’m always worried that the house is going to randomly burn down or that something bad will happen to my dogs! I hate that feeling!
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
Talk about a long day of traveling! I always feel so grimey after traveling!
stacey-healthylife says
Wow that’s some crazy traveling. That’s always the part I hate, especially when wanting to get home.
Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) says
It’s definitely an adjustment when you lose time coming home. I remember moving to Korea and later Australia and losing an entire day both times. So sad.
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
How airports ever got off selling $10 “salads” in the first place is beyond me. Have a safe trip back home! 🙂
Sarah R says
The KC airport is pretty small… not as small as the OKC airport I was in this weekend though. You’re actually only about 40 minutes from where I live! Like Brie, I second the Boulevard beer if you can stomach any more alcohol!
Natalia - a side of simple says
I always appreciate home so much after a lot of traveling. There’s nothing like your own routine and bed 🙂
Jessie says
Haha the Syracuse airport story cracks me up. It’s my hometown airport and I have to agree- it’s probably the last place I want to be stranded in for several hours. That said, it’s a great airport for getting there last minute and still having plenty of time to catch your flight since it’s so tiny!
Great to meet you @ foodbuzz!
The Wife of a Dairyman says
Sounds like a very long day for the two of you! Have a safe last leg of flight:)
Sarah (OC2Seattle) says
Hope the rest of your travels go well and sorry I missed you at the Foodbuzz Fest! Your onion breath comment made me giggle because I went from Foodbuzz to LA where I ate at the Stinking Rose with my sis – garlic was emanating from our breath and pores and I pity the man who sat next to me on the plane the next day 😉
Emily @ One Sweet Vegan says
I’m sorry about your surprise onion experience. I, myself, am craaaazy about onions. I’m impressed that the airport had a tofu wrap available. It sounds really good. I hope the rest of your trip home goes well!
Jordan Wandfluh says
I live like 10 minutes away from the Kansas City Airport! It is the SMALLEST and most abandoned airport! It is funny going in there in the morning for a flight. Next time you are in Kansas City I can show you amazing places to eat!
Sally says
What a bummer on the long travel day! I always love traveling from the east to the west coast (hey, look, I gained 3 hours for free) but coming back is positively brutal. Also bummer on the onions. I hear you on the stanky breath. Brushing my teeth never even works. I usually have to eat something sweet (twist my arm) to get rid of the onion funk.
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
Ugh that is the worst with raw onions. I hate it!
Cerina says
Mmm Thai food! I have a Thai friend and I love the way she cooks rice! 😀
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
safe travels! i wish i could get my husband to eat all the healthy snacks i pack for planes. he is always too tempted by the overpriced stuff offered on the flight. what’s UP with that?!?
Meg says
I absolutely LOVE the idea of grabbing a banana for breakfast tomorrow! Writing that down right now 😉
Cara Craves... says
Safe travels!
You’ll get there soon enough!
Melissa @ HerGreenLife says
Well, at least you were on the other side of the state in the city with that doesn’t allow smoking IN the airport. We’re stuck in the stone ages here — though if you’d had a long enough layover, you could have added one more brewery to your trip — Schlafly 🙂
Mimi says
Sad, but true. The KCMO airport really stinks. They pin you into the terminals!
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
We’re leaving for Vegas on Saturday, I’m excited about everything except all the airports and layovers and heavy baggage and cameras, LOL. Travel is fun and exhausting at the same time!
Diana @ frontyardfoodie says
Yeah, I live here in KC and you’re right, we have quite a little airport and we always joke that you’ll never stand in line but to be honest it IS really well organized and not hard to find anything! Enjoy the wifi. haha
holly @ couchpotatoathlete says
I was just on a plane today to Vegas — and I had fun taking out my camera for all the food pics — so happy we upgraded to first class — lots of good food and drinks to take pics of 🙂
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
Haha if I run out of bananas and don’t have time to get to the grocery store, I always make sure to pick one up (on campus) too. Breakfast just isn’t the same without a banana. 😉
Hope you made it home safely!
Meg says
I grew up in KC and now having done alot of traveling i realize how much i took the KC airport for granite. It has to be one of the most user friendly airports ever! Little Rock airport is awesome as well. You wanna talk about small airports try Little Rock or Springfield, MO! haha!
Joanne says
Oh NO! There is nothing but NOTHING in the Syracuse airport (if that’s NY Syracuse?). We live about 1 hour away so that’s our main airport (poor us!).
I’ll have to be your blogger contact if you’re ever stranded in Upstate NY again. Still – being stuck in Laguadia would be far worse in my book. I DETEST that airport.
Heather says
I always get so nervous going home after a trip. Did my house burn down? did someone break in? I know. paranoid.
Katie says
I’m from KC and loved the quaint-abandoned feeling from the airport. But then I moved to Rochester, NY and found an even *smaller* airport (although it probably has a bit more bustle than KC)!
[I will say that one of my favorite airports is in Detroit, if only because I loved the colorful underground tunnel connecting the terminals!]
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
Too bad about the sandwich and onion breath. Hopefully it eventually went away! Maybe the macaroons helped? 😛
Becca Clark-H says
I’m an avid reader of your bloggings and looked upon this post only to respond with a shriek of excitement. I happen to live in Kansas City, and though it IS a large city, and I AM reading the post a couple days late, it was exciting to find that you were so close. You are kind of a celebrity to me and a source of much inspiration. If you happen to land in Kansas City again, feel free to give me the heads up 🙂
