I got up at 5:30 to go to Plyo Max yesterday morning, and when I came home, soaked in sweat, I found Mazen sitting on the kitchen counter with tears on his face. Matt reported that something was wrong with his foot. He wouldn’t let us touch it and wouldn’t stand or walk. We did a lot of assessments and determined that a doctor visit was more than necessary. We were worried! M was totally fine the night before and neither of us remember any kind of jumping incident.
We ate strawberry smoothies and Blueberry High Five toast while we waited for our appointment.
Our doctor thought it was most likely a sprain. We were told to watch him and come in for an Xray that afternoon if things didn’t improve.
When we got back home he started playing on the floor and I noticed he was putting more pressure on it. Then he stood up! I felt a flashback to 12 months when I texted this photo to Matt and my mom “MAZEN IS STANDING!”
Lunch was a salad topped with leftover grilled zucchini and smoked salmon with some Whole Foods Caesar dressing and a couple of Everything crackers.
The rest of the afternoon we spent painting and watching movies. He did a little bit of hobbling around, but mostly wanted to be carried.
We went to get ice cream in the stroller for a treat, and he fell asleep on the way home (a rarity!)
After that nap, he was able to put a little more pressure on it and as of last night, he was walking around nearly back to normal. We think it was some sort of sprain and he’s on the mend, but it was quite bizarre and a little scary.
I had planned a crockpot dinner, but that got pushed aside, so we pulled a lasagna out of the freezer and had that with a salad from our garden topped with Caesar dressing and parmesan cheese.
Happppy Friday!

I hope Mazen continues to improve and feel better! Thinking of him!

Hi kath! How did you get mazen to watch movies for an extended period of time? My daughter will barely watch for 5 minutes and she is only 4 months younger than Mazen. Also, what are some of his favorite movies? Thanks 🙂
KathEats says
He doesn’t have the attention span for long movies but he will watch maybe 30 minutes at a time. He loves Wee Sing Sillyville, Frozen and the Lion King (although a little scary)
Jill says
Four months is a big difference when they’re little, though 🙂 My kiddo is almost 2.5 and he enjoys about 20 minutes of a Thomas episode, and then he’s had enough.
Glad Mazen is okay! It’s so scary when they’re too little to really be able to express what hurts or what happened. Hope he’s feeling 100% today 🙂

I think some of it is just temperament. My daughter almost 4) has always been sucked in by the screen and always think the show was too short, even if it was a full length movie. My Son (2) has always had a short attention span for tv. Even if it’s something he adores (Thomas movies) he’s usually antsy and moving on after 20 or 30 minutes. They both have very limited tv time and most days get none, so it’s kind of a special treat, but he’s still not that into it.
jen says
Meant to add movie ideas, we limit it to very tame movies and my daughter’s favorites are:
Thomas, King of the Railway
Mary Poppins
Pirate Fairy (Tinkerbell movie)
Secret of the Wings (Tinkerbell again)
Curious George 2
All super tame IMO for violence, scariness, language, ect.

Oh no! I hope Mazen’s foot is back to normal super soon! Poor little guy! <3

You must have been so worried. I admit it was a little odd to read about his foot, then your food, then his foot. Poor guy. But that’s just me I guess! ; -)

my kids did something similar when they had a major growth spurt. sometimes they grow so fast the plates have a hard time keeping up! Mine are now 10 & 14 and we still get that! (mostly in the heel), good luck little guy!!
jen says
Mine too! It was so frightening the 1st time my 3 year old suddenly wept that she couldn’t walk, but after some Advil and rest she’s always fine. She almost 4 now, and it’s happened 3 or 4 times, sometimes waking up weeping at night. Kids’ little bodies sure work hard and do some crazy things!

I love that you guys are watching Elf in June! My nephew would watch the Grinch year round if we let him!

Poor little guy- hope he gets back to 100% soon. That lasagna looks amazing by the way!! May I ask a question? I love that you eat so many salads and I have been trying to do the same. My problem is I am stuck on ranch dressing…and I tend to use WAY too much. Do you use only a little bit of dressing- do you toss your greens and veggies in a dressing and serve it that way- do you have a particular way to keep the calorie count down when it comes to dressings??? I realize this is probably another dumb question but I am trying my best do eat better and I know that huge amounts of ranch aren’t going to cut it…..help?!?!?!?
Thanks Kath- I really admire you.
KathEats says
What if you found a lightened up dressing (like a yogurt-based homemade one) that you could use the same amount of that would be lighter? I mix yogurt, olive oil, Dijon and salt and pepper for a really easy homemade dressing. I also say that if you need lots of dressing you might be eating the wrong kind of lettuce! Find something that tastes good plain (which is easy to do in the summer – but not in the winter!) Lastly, tossing the greens with your hands in a big bowl with the dressing to ensure everything is evenly coated will help a little bit of dressing stretch a longer way.

I love the Bolthouse Ranch – its made with yogurt (in the refrigerator section) and only 45 cals per serving…and its NOT fat-free, so it actually tastes really good.
Michele says
Hidden Valley Ranch makes a packet that you can mix with greek yogurt to make ranch dressing. I use the one for dip and it is delicious!

I’m glad you took him in! When I was in 3rd grade I broke my wrist jumping off our patio roof into a snowbank. I remember it hurt so bad and crying so much but they didn’t think it was actually broken and waited 24 hours before they took me to the ER. Boy did they feel guilty when they found out it was broken and I was stuck in a cast for 6 weeks!

always grateful to have freezer dinners on-hand when dinner prep doesn’t go as planned!

What is the high five bread? Where from and how does it taste ?
KathEats says
It’s from our bakery, Great Harvest. It’s very hearty with lots of flax seeds.

Is he maybe having a growth spurt or maybe just done more jumping or walking or running on it? Maybe different shoes or going barefoot? My kids just got a trampoline so there feet and bodies are getting used to all of the jumping. Sometimes it is so hard with kids to know if how serious an injury is and when to take them in, but I always think it’s better to be on the safe side. With that said, we haven’t been to the doctor very often except for checkups and multiple ear infections when they were really little. Hope he continues to feel better. I have a bum foot that is really bothering me this week so I’m hoping it improves. Have a wonderful weekend!

the same thing happened to my son (21 months) last week. Crying. Limping, wouldn’t put any pressure on his leg. Doctor also said it was a sprain and by the next day he was fine. I was so worried, though.
KathEats says
So weird! What’s weird to me is they are black and blue and swollen like when I sprained my ankle in high school. Maybe they just have a lower pain tolerance? Or their bodies heal 10x as fast as older people!
Karen says
So glad your little guy is feeling better so quickly!! Ahhh – to have the bones/joints and resilience of a toddler…
Happy weekend, Kath!

Also – that toast looks delicious. Do you bake it with the blueberries in it? Or did you add them on top after toasting the bread?

Yes they are baked in!
