I made Oatmeal Berry Goblets my mother and grandmother this morning -topped with some cinnamon-sugar, walnuts, and fresh berries. Both requested a “tiny bit” of oatmeal, so I made up for volume with height. Complete with tiny spoons!
I had a Kath-size portion (well, it was actually 1/3 cup oats/milk) with the same. The oatmeal also had a few dried cranberries and peaches. My grandmother always has fresh berries so I had a little of each kind 🙂
I love freshly squeezed OJ but never have it at home. It was divine – perfectly sweet and tart.
Church Birthday Brunch
My grandmother was in charge of an after-church brunch for Pop’s birthday. We set up all the food and decor this morning before church. It was a huge hit! We thought we might be lugging home leftover cheese and crackers but it turns out almost everything was gone!
The spread included…
4 kinds of crackers with sharp cheddar and brie, smoked salmon with cream cheese and capers with pumpernickel bread, ham salad, chocolate almonds, mini corn dogs, carrots and grapes, brownies, cream puffs, hot milk cake and punch.
The centerpiece was two photos of Pop with a little car to represent 1918 🙂
I had a cup of church coffee while folks mingled in…had to use a little half and half as there was no skim milk to be found.
Here’s my plate of salmon + pumpernickel sandwiches, carrots + grapes, 2 chocolate almonds and a cheese and cracker
And #2 with a piece of cake!
(I nibbled on a few more carrots + grapes)
This was the best homemade cake I’ve had in ages. It’s my grandmother’s Hot Milk Cake. I plan on putting the recipe up this afternoon so look for it on the side bar!
It was so good, my mom and I did a round of mindless but delicious nibbling with the leftovers. Scraping icing off the sides – you know the deal. So I probably ate twice as much as was on my plate.
Despite eating my share of cake and munchies at lunch, I do feel a little hungry. I might need some more berries as a late snack. I just hope I can stay away from the leftover cake…
I took a video of the group singing to my grandfather. He loves baseball, so he threw a pitch at the end 🙂 In fact, he been invited to throw the opening pitch at the Orioles vs. Red Sox game Tuesday night! I hope they put it on TV.
The Husband
With his blackberry glued to his thumb, I said to the husband last night “Hey, take a photo of your dinner so I can see what you make.” So those of you who wonder what he’s been eating, he cooked for his mom last night for Mother’s Day.
Crabcakes, buttermilk-parsley mashed potatoes and broccoflower. Guess we both eat the same things (crab) even when we’re apart 🙂
See you all late tonight 🙂

Oh, that video of your grandfather is so cute! He looks so happy. I know I get all embarassed when people sing Happy Bday to me. haha…
That spread looks so good – a lot of variety. I think we just have to accept that in those types of situations a little mindless eating is inevitable. I know I’m guilty of it! But most of that food looks pretty healthy…
The husband may have to start his own blog…his dinner looks great, and I don’t even like crabcakes!

Hi Kath… A while back you said you really like the book Superfoods. I googled the title and there are a million “Superfood” books. Which were you referring to? Thanks for the time and effort you put into responding to everyones questions and keeping up with the blogging – I love it!

Dang, hubby, you proved me wrong.
Why was your grandpa invited to throw out the pitch? Is he well known for something?

Matt,
I have a quick question for you. When you made bagels, did you grease the baking sheet. I can’t remember seeing this as part of your method, but had a bit of a problem with some of my bagels sticking after flipping and completing the last 15 minutes of bake time. Typically I use parchment for everything but can only use it up to 450?F, so I had to go without. Just curious because that was the only slight glitch, otherwise they were delicious.

RE: bagels
I usually flour the sheet pan, or use spray… someone else reported having the same problem, so maybe I need to specifically mention this in the recipe.
