Raspberry + Wheatberry Oatmeal
with Banana, Flax + Walnuts
I love all berries, raspberries especially. I could probably eat a pint a day!
Despite having an open agenda today, I got up with the husband to workout. I have to say, it was nice to be exercised and fed by 8 a.m. – leaves the day wide open! But we have CLOUDS and RAIN – boooooooo! That is not conducive to hammocking. But I guess it is good for some baking. My sister is coming for dinner tonight, so I think I’ll baking something fun. I’m going to do it this morning with a piece of minty gum in my mouth to prevent me from nibbling my way through. Now I just have to decide on a recipe!
Gym this morning was ET and pull-up machine for a round of upper body challenges. My biceps have really gotten toned from all the pull-ups! I used to be able to do 1.5 real pull-ups (I do 3 sets of 10 of assisted ones) so I should see if I can do 2 full ones now – or maybe 3-4!
I had half a slice of spelt bread with PB before we left. The spelt wasn’t as filling as my other toast breakfasts.
Breakfast was our usual oats/banana/hemp/milk/water/flax/vanilla base with about 1/4 cup of wheatberries and 1/2 a cup of raspberries stirred in (and a few for garnish!) plus toasted walnuts and a half tsp of brown sugar on top.
In our HUGE Pottery Barn bowls. They aren’t as photogenic because they’re so big you have to get down in them with the camera!
With coffee. I need a break from coffee. It’s starting to give me that headachy/shoulder-achy feeling I get when I have it too often. I just love it so much. I’ll take a few days off during my weekend trip to Baltimore.
Now to find a recipe!

Hi Kath, Just wondering if you can make a different breakfast other than oatmeal once and a while for those of us who’d like to get new ideas (and don’t like oatmeal)?
Kelly T says
I have giant bowls from pier 1 and no matter what i put in there, it never looks like it enough.
but they are pretty so its more fu nto eat out of them.
Kath says
Sara,
Sorry, I love oatmeal. I try to vary my flavors and technique for some variety (muesli-style, baked oatmeal, different toppings + fruits). If you click on the “breakfast” category you will find some other breakfast ideas like pancakes and yogurt.

I love your bowls – def makes it look like less oatmeal lol. I love raspberries in my oatmeal! I just tried it for the first time this week and found it to be delicious!
Katie says
Ahhh! Fresh raspberries are like heaven. If I could only stop eating them all RIGHT after I buy them, I’d have enough to put in my cereal. lol.
Heather says
Kath- I’m with you on the oatmeal. I almost never get tired of it (especially with different toppings)!
Have fun with your sis tonight! Any ideas on what you’re making? Or I guess I’ll have to just wait on the dinner post for that 🙂
Nick says
Love raspberries but I’m not a fan of them in oatmeal. Same thing goes for strawberries and blueberries. They’re all great fresh, some of my favorite fruits, but they just don’t do it in oatmeal for me, they sorta get lost. Strawberry or raspberry reduced sugar (so more fruit content) preserves…now we’re talkin.

I hate how rasberries and blackberries always come in those itsy bitsy containers. I need to find them on sale (not $5 each) and buy a whole bunch.
Becca says
I’m with you on the raspberries! Or just about any berry! When are you going to Baltimore?
R. Leigh says
I was reading an article on MSN Health and I couldn’t help but think about you, Kath, because it fits you so well (especially #8)!

Hannah: I feel you. I get SO frustrated with how expensive berries can be, even in the middle of the summer! Especially fresh cherries, which are so wonderful but really expensive. I remember being at the grocery store one time when the check out boy rang up a bag of cherries, looked at me really skeptically, and asked me if I was sure I wanted to buy them because they were $12 for a small bag… on sale.

That oatmeal looks SO yummy and summery with the raspberries. I haven’t commented on your blog much, but I wanted to tell you that I’ve been following it since February or so, and I find it so inspiring. Not only that– I used to think I hated oatmeal, but thanks to you I’ve discovered I actually love it when it’s cooked with banana, and now I have that for breakfast almost every morning.
Your workout description reminded me to ask: I don’t have access to a gym right now, and I was wondering if you had any suggestions about toning the arms at home?
Thanks!
Anna

Oh my gosh, I just can’t get enough fresh raspberries when we have them at home. I always find I manage to snack through half the container without even realizing it.
I like when they are slightly mushy… when they hit that point I love spreading them on toast with a little sweetener. Instant jam! And SO good.
Mandy says
Mmmm…. LOVE fresh raspberries! Your oatmeal ALWAYS looks devine and I never get tired of seeing your widely-varying combinations! Yum, yum! I’m eating pumpkin oatmeal almost every day now because of you! 🙂 I alternate between pumpkin oatmeal and pumpkin yogurt. LOVE it! Both of them are like pumpkin pie for breakfast! yumm

Clever blog post title ;0)
I LOVE raspberries, but prefer them in smoothies (like the ones that I just posted about, on my blog) – I can’t stand the seeds, so I can only consume them in “liquid form,” with the seeds all ground up :0) Your oatmeal looks fabulous though!
Sorry about the nasty weather :0( Hope it brightens up there for you!

The only thing better than raspberries is raspberries dipped in chocolate ;o)

Hey Kath, sorry about the fruit comment, I guess I was just not paying attention because you have such an array of veggies. congrats on your calorie counting venture 😀

I have oatmeal every morning with diced strawberries and mashed bananas and it is GREAT! I even got my boyfriend hooked on all fresh strawberry oatmeal… he was previously an all brown sugar + maple syrup guy. I’d like to try a blue/raspberry combo.
I also bought popsicle molds that I fill & freeze with pureed fruit + water, or fruit + plain yogurt and they’re amazing, and work with a lot of different fruit (try watermelon and cantelope!) I highly recommend them as a healthy summer treat – no sugar added! Amazon has cute molds, mine look like rocket ships.

Katie (CCV): raspberries dipped in chocolate?!?! omg.
i am sooo excited for raspberry season to start here. lots of raspberries from the farmers market!!! too bad i too often forget about them in my fridge and i end up with moldy raspberries. 🙁

I can’t wait until raspberries are in season here–well, any berry for that matter!

Hey Kath – I haven’t commented on your blog before but I love reading it! My question is, I am entering into my busiest time of year at work, which means I have to nix my lunchtime workouts, which has been my main source of exercise (mostly sculpting classes, I try to sneak in cardio in the a.m. when I can, but that usually is only once or twice a week). Do you have any advice for fitting in exercise when you are working LONG days?? It will be about 5 weeks before things calm down and I don’t want all my hard work to go down the tubes. Thank you!

Hi Kath! I just found out about your blog from a friend – it’s terrific! Love all the photos & recipes! Can’t wait to try everything.
I love oatmeal too but also really love cream of wheat. Do you ever add that into the mix?
Have a great day!

Melanie and Kath —
I’ve wondered about cream of wheat too. My husband loves it but it just doesn’t fill me up as much as oatmeal, even with mix-ins. Kath, any opinion?
Thanks,
Carrie H

Re: arm exercises….
you should check out self.com and shape.com they have great ideas for workouts, that can easily be done at home, most of them use hand weights though…although you can always find someting to subsitute for weights (like water bottles).

I made muesli last night and had this morning with my organic mango and strawberries from my CSA and thought of you. I tried muesli for the first time yesterday and really liked it. I liked it even better today after it sat all night long. The birdie likes it too!

Anna – I agree with the others suggestions. Self has some great workouts. I also HIGHLY recommend the book Bikini Bootcamp: Two Weeks to Your Ultimate Beach Body. It’s more about total body than just arms, but the exercises are great and there is tons of variety. For some reason I also find the illustrations and descriptions more intuitive than what I read in self. Even though I belong to a gym I do most of my work with free weights so you could easily pick up a cheap set.

I love cream of wheat also, but it doesn’t have too much fiber. As an alternative, I make oat bran with lots of mix-ins for breakfast. Although the taste is not exactly the same as cream of wheat, it has some texture similarities. I find that oat bran keeps me pretty full as well.
I like to add a tablespoon of almond meal to my banana oat bran. It adds a great nutty flavor. I tried the peanut butter on the spoon technique, but my problem is that I can’t stop at one spoonful….. hehehehe So almond meal keeps me accountable!
Melanie says
Lucy,
I like Oatbran too and definitely has a lot more fiber than cream of wheat. I like to use sugar free maple syrup on my oat bran too. I like how they taste together!
My newest thing for cream of wheat is to quickly whisk in one egg at the end of the cooking time with a little vanilla – makes it creamy and almost like a treat! I like the egg since it adds more protein too.
I know people who really dislike oatmeal, oatbran, etc and really can’t imagine why! 🙂

Heather ,
You will have to wait and see! Although yesterday I mentioned I stopped by Fresh Market for chicken sausages. Doh! I ruined the surprise again!
R. Leigh,
Thanks for sharing! I eat lots of those most days – in fact I think I’ve had most of them (or a sidekick) already today. Maybe not tomatoes yet…. Glad to see oats made the list!!
Anna ,
Thanks for reading!! I third, (fourth?) the other readers’ suggestions to check out SELF and Shape.com. And Women’s Health too. They all have great at-home workouts. And my #1 suggestion? PUSHUPS!
JennC,
No prob 🙂
Mellisa ,
Glad to hear you like the blog 🙂
Anna #2,
When I worked full time, I went for a 30 minute walk on my lunch break on most days. It was quick and easy because I didn’t need to shower or change into gym clothes, etc. Do you think you could squeeze in a walk – even if it’s 15 minutes? They have to give you a lunch break! What about right before or right after work? 10 minutes each time? Walking is my #1 suggestion because it’s easy and you can do it anywhere, anytime (if it’s not raining!) but suggestion #2 would be: can you get up at 5 and workout before work? If I can do it you can! If these won’t work for you, just aim to eat as healthy as possible until your work slows down and you can increase your activity again.
Melanie ,
Welcome to KERF! I’ve actually never had cream of wheat. If I’m not mistaken, its somewhat processed with less fiber? Or maybe that’s just the instant kind? That’s probably why. I’d love to try it sometime, but I don’t think I’d go buy a whole box. Want to come make it for me 😉
Edited to add: I just read that the non-instant kind is actually ground wheatberries! Guess I should see if I can find that kind.
Chelsea ,
Horay for muesli! I’m having it tomorrow, I think 🙂
