Sung to the tune of the Beauty and the Beast song “Something There”
There’s something sweet. And read the sign –
There is coffee, beer and tea and even wine!
The menu dear, there’s so much more.
You’ll wonder why you didn’t see it there before.
Belmont has a new coffee shop (in the old La Taza spot) that serves breakfast and lunch everyday from 7a-3p and happy hour bites Thurs – Sat from 3a-8p. I met my friend Caroline for lunch last week and we had lunch on the patio. The food was great!!
We shared a sandwich and kale salad, and both exceeded expectations. Our club sandwich had real chopped chicken on homemade focaccia that was incredibly buttery (and I believe made in house). And the cheese – whatever it was it did not say – was anything but boring. I think it may have been a relative of brie.
Forever my salad literally on the side of my sandwich. It was filled with kale, creamy avocado, feta, sunflower seeds, radishes and everything spices. SO good!
My only comment was that the menu was a little short on additional green salady items, but the one salad was so good I would definitely get it again! Next time I need to get either coffee or wine 🙂
After lunch we took the boys for a walk. Don’t they sort of look like twins? Especially in their matching strollers. Birch is three weeks older!
Throw Some Shade
We’ve been spending so much time on the front porch. I think the fact that it’s covered from the sun makes is that much more livable than the back deck. We have seriously considered putting a roof on our back deck, especially since Thomas knows how to do complicated projects like that himself, but it would still be quite expensive and a big project and would we lose light or view!? So we probably won’t do it. But maybe. I miss my old covered back porch so much!

The Beast
True that he’s no prince charming, but there’s something in him that I simply didn’t see. That love-able beast Gus. How handsome is he!?

Thanks for the info about Belle! Will have to check it out the next time I’m getting my haircut at Bella Hair Studio in Belmont. Fun!

The boys are darling and they really look like twins for sure! I wonder if that’ll change as they get older? Love your house (and your older homes too). In regard to your porch areas – where do you spend the most time and what is most convenient – is the back area close to the kitchen and bbq? If so, I would consider a small deck area that is “covered” to some degree in the back. That way you wouldn’t loose all your light and sun, but have it partially covered. It wouldn’t have to be a “porch” or as big as the porch in your last house. It’s great that you have Thomas to build it – lucky you! I’ve been a fan of yours for many years and have always enjoyed your posts and info (I don’t respond often) – thanks!

Thanks for chiming in Susan! Yes it’s connected to the kitchen and grill (but not the back yard). I think not having rain on it would mean we could have more comfortable cushions and maybe would prefer to sit out there more?!

Have you considered a retractable awning for the back porch? I thought I didn’t like them, but we inherited one with our new house and it comes in handy for grilling in the rain or when it is super sunny out back. It does make things darker when it is out, especially in the kitchen which gets darker with the awning, but we can just retract it when we’re done, so it’s kind of the best of both worlds. No clue about pricing since like I said, it was already at the house, but could be a possibility!

I have seen them that look quite nice (Sarah has one!) but I mentioned it to Thomas once and he was like “No thank you.” 🙂 He prefers wood!

My husband and I are having the same debate as we get the afternoon sun in our backyard and that’s where we spend all our time… also off the kitchen etc but my main concern would be blocking off natural light into the kitchen/living room if we were to put up a permanent structure!
Also we live in Canada so literally get like 2 days of summer ? would make more sense in a warmer climate like yours.
KathEats says
Haha – maybe a sun room instead?! I will say that at my old house I put in two skylights for the “light in the kitchen” reason and they were the perfect solution. Not too dark at all.

Gussie! Where ya been, ol chum?

We had a retractable awning at our old house and LOVED it! It was motorized and you could just put it half way out or all the way. Our current house has a pergola, which looks better, but doesn’t quite give us the shade we need in the hot summer sun!
Cindy says
How about a pergola with a shade over top of it? My husband built us one for less than $150, and we purchased a sun shade that we threw over the top of it and tied on the sides from Amazon. We loved it so much we got married in our back yard under it!
KathEats says
I love pergolas but I don’t think that would work because our deck is so high up
Susanna says
Our back deck is 1/2 covered (the house is sort of “U” shape ) and it is the BEST. The portion closest to the house is covered and we have a table there, which is perfect for eating outside. The rest of the deck gets alot of sun still. We also have a large front porch, and probably use both equally!
