Howdy guys! No sign of AT&T yet and they have 25 minutes left in their window. I hate it when I am expecting someone because I am so anxious and can’t relax and keep looking out the window! I went for an hour-long brisk power walk this morning while chatting with my mom on my cell phone and then reading some Women’s Health. ‘Twas awesome!
I came home just in time for my AT&T window, but I needed to shower so I speed-showered in case the guy came right then. I had to keep looking out the window, but I made it and got dressed in record time.
My Strawberry Pie Oats didn’t hold me as long as most bowls do. I wonder if it was because the bowl was heavy on fruit? A whole banana and strawberries instead of wheatberries, cottage cheese and some of my “heavier” mixins? I was growling and empty just 3 hours later at 12:30 and made the quickest lunch I know: a huge salad.
I threw some broccoli, tomatoes, peppers, carrot, and about 1/2 a cup of navy beans into a skillet to heat for 5-8 minutes. Meanwhile I chopped up some romaine, tossed it with fig balsamic vinegar and lemon olive oil, and topped that with orange sections, walnuts and feta. Oh! And a tablespoon of raisins, which was the highlight.
Side serving of crunch –
And a POM spritzer – 1 shot of POM with a can of seltzer.
Mischievous Bear
I came home last night to a sleeping husband and this bear misbehaving on the kitchen table with a knife and fork into some bread. So I put him in Matt’s (weird!) bookbag to stowaway to work. When I came down this morning I found him wedged into the scanner, but the best laugh came when I turned on my computer and found this:
I laughed hysterically all by myself.
I tried to get this photo up this morning but as part of my 100 technical difficulties of the day, I couldn’t get the PDF converted to a JPG. Got it now thanks to Print Screen!
My Eye-Fi card is also not working. No idea why, but it picked a bad day to act up because I hope the AT&T changes won’t add variables to the troubleshooting if we’re switching internet.

Interesting article – thanks for sharing!

Great article about the rewards for burning calories. I think a lot of people tend to do that and often end up eating more calories than they burned! LOVE your mega salads 🙂

My boyfriend and I do the same thing with a random sticker….that sticker has been on toothbrushes, food wrappers, etc. all over my condo! It is so much fun, I love when I find it and then have to think of the next creative place it will hide 🙂 You and Matt are adorable!

Hey Kath! Thanks for the great LA TImes article on cookbooks and their evolution over time. I have a slew of cookbooks I inherited from the 50’s-70’s and I was always really surprised at how much more healthful the portion sizes were and the emphasis on REAL ingredients. I often cook from them and realize how good a tiny amount of butter can make a dish luxurious as opposed to a whole stick of margarine or faux butter which lends nothing in terms of flavor, texture or nutrition to the dish! I will now be much more mindful when prepping from newer cookbooks and trimming unnecessarily large measurements and ingredients! Hope your AT&T guy showed!

Hahah – the bear! That salad looks so colorful and delicious 🙂

Sorry about that AT&T guy! I hate when they do that!

What a cute bear! It made me laugh too. 🙂
Both of those articles are really interesting. The first because I can sometimes do that (hmm…I ran for an hour so I can have a cookie.) The second because I got the 1997 and 2006 versions of Joy of Cooking for XMAS and took back 2006 since it was the only one I had a receipt for. I’m glad now! It seems strange that they would have changed recipes like that in that time frame since families didn’t get smaller since 97 unless I’m missing something?

haha. you guys are too funny! love the bear! and the food of course! glad to see you entered the contest!!! gooooood luck!

I was really bummed about that Joy of Cooking thing… I’ve always turned to that book as a staple, but I guess I won’t be buying the new one. I’ll stick to my old, 1960s version!

AW the bear is adorable! Isn’t it cute when they leave you little messages? 🙂

the article was interesting, but mostly because my experience doesn’t agree with it. i lost 10 lbs by exercising consistently and eating better quality foods, but i ALWAYS “ate back my exercise calories”.. so if my net was 1200 and i burned 400, i ate 1600. and sometimes i even ate more than what i should have and lost more weight during those times (eating 1800 when i only burned 400 etc). anyway, just interesting how no matter what different bodies can react differently i guess.

My brother and I did a similar game with a 2nd grade picture of him…it was always appearing in random places! 🙂
Kath, where do you find your salad bowls???? I’m looking for some nice big bowls for salads, but can’t seem to find any?!? Anybody have any suggestions?? Thanks! 😀

Oh, I love Fig and Balsamic vinegar! and while I love visiting Olivers and Co. when in Boston, they are a little…ummm…pricey! My friend brought some back from a vineyard while out in Napa last year and I’ve been ordering it through them ever since. Much more economical. I figured I would pass it along…

Haha, I’m glad mr. bear added some laughter to your day. Both of those articles were very interesting. I agree with what the first one has to say. In track season I would eat more and sometimes gain weight because I would overestimate calories I burned from running. Thanks for the thought provoking 🙂

I read and posted about that cornell study too (JoC) – isn’t that ridiculous?? No wonder our country is becoming obese…

I love your mom’s comment, and the little bear game.
My mom and dad play a similar game with a pair of my dad’s boxer shorts. Can you tell why they just celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary?!

In one of my Food Service Management classes this year I had to do a presentation on “Portion Distortion” and obesity in America. It was very interesting and alarming.
After reading your post and seeing that picture, I’m really craving salad right now.

rhodeygirl ,
I don’t think the article way talking about net calories – as you know I followed the same principle as you throughout my weight loss and still believe it’s very important to eat back ALL exercise calories burned when using that method. I think the article was saying that people who burn more tend to eat back the equivalent of their net – and then some, which would put them nearing maintenance or evening gaining some days. I think it applies more to people who aren’t counting anything.
Courtney ,
That “salad” bowl is actually a huge serving bowl from Crate & Barrel. I have a handful of serving bowls and prefer to eat salads in them than cereal + oat sized bowls (although it would be great to eat a portion of oats that big!)

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned Brian Kest’s yoga workouts before, but they’re the BEST. Very difficult in repetition and motion, but the poses are rather beginner – intermediate. But I’m always sore after I do them!!
Karen says
Totally off topic…
As a “kind of” new reader (1 or 2 months now I think) I was wondering how do you keep going? How do you stay motivated to eat the right things and not give into delicious and evil treats (and I’m not talking about in moderation here either!)? Keeping the weight off is one reason, of course, and wanting to live a healthier lifestyle, but I just want to know how you have the drive. You might have guessed that I am asking from a position of pure desperation…I have been about 4 pounds away from my goal weight for about, oh, 6 months? I just can’t seem to stay on track. I guess I was just hoping to hear how you manage to do it day after day and stay so motivated.
I really appreciate and enjoy your website. Your dedication is really something that I find inspiring.
Emily says
Love your salads…always so colorful!
Jess says
I can definitely see how that second article is true.
As someone who loves to cook but pretty much only cooks for myself (my boyfriend’s a veggie-hater) I’m continually cutting recipes in half or more. I always notice that I end up with way more food than I expected based on the serving sizes suggested. I almost always up the vegetable ratio as well.
Very interesting to have my thoughts confirmed.

hey Kath, I have a quick question for you. I’m in high school and just recently started the softball season, so I have practice everyday that doesn’t end until 6. However, I’m trying to lose a little weight (before spring break!) and I just don’t feel like I’m getting a good enough workout at practice, so I like to run on my elliptical at home. I usually eat dinner right when I get home (around 6:30), wait about half an hour, and then elliptical for about 40 minutes, without eating anything afterwards. My dinner is usually just protein and veggies also. Is it ok to eat a protein and veggie packed meal shortly before a workout? I feel fine doing it, but I want to be sure I’m not harming or making my workout less efficient. Thanks!!
Meg says
What a colorful salad!
Kath says
Karen ,
Practice makes perfect? I’m going on 4 years since I started to really focus on eating healthy, and it hasn’t always been a smooth ride. I definitely still have days when I just want to snack, snack, snack, but I stay away from most “evil” snacks by not keeping them in my house and trying to keep lots of healthy options on hand. I also know from trial and error that I feel my best inside my head and my body when I eat well, so I will sometimes consider a snack or something and decide I don’t want to lose that “good health” feeling I’ve got going. Once you get on a roll, it’s easy to stay on it. As I always say, motivation follows results.
Biz319 ,
Are they free!?
larabel ,
If you feel fine, it’s fine. But a little carbs wouldn’t hurt to round out the meal in general! Or save them for a small post work-out snack.

Kath, I did just post under your last post about a good yoga session to try but thought it might be best to post on the more current post (too many ‘posts’ in one sentence, I know)…
anyway, Yoga to the People is a fantastic and FREE itunes podcast. He talks for a couple of minutes at the beginning but mostly it just gets you motivated / ready for the session while in child’s pose.
The flows are a lovely amount of challenging!
Enjoy!
