Hey-oo!!!!
I’m in a bumbling good mood this AM – I’m sure you can understand why 🙂
We set the alarm for 6:26 but ended up snoozing a little longer. I think we both needed a little more sleep! I didn’t really go back to sleep – just laid there for a while.
Then I got up and headed down the hall to the gym!
I have always wondered if having an elliptical at home would be worth the investment for me. I would never buy a treadmill because I can always run outside, but when I need some equipment for cross training, a home elliptical would be perfect. So living at Karen’s with the gym down the hall is kind of a test to see how much of an impact it would make.
And I can tell you – I would have NEVER gone to the real gym this morning (or anywhere that I would have left the house) because I would have needed a whole hour for travel and wouldn’t have been in the mood for the intensity of the gym but I got in a nice 30 minute elliptical session today and it was all because the machine was nearby.
But I will say a CON is that my workouts at home/hotel gyms are always less intense. I’d have to find a way to balance that somehow. I think when I have kids I will definitely invest in an elliptical at home!
Came back and whipped up some breakfast before we hit the road –
- Oikos plain (~1 cup)
- Quaker Oatmeal Squares (~1/2 cup)
- 2/3 of a big banana
- 1 tbsp trail mix
- 1 sprinkle flax
- 1 tbsp TJ’s Sunflower Butter
Soooo I picked up a few bowls at Target yesterday for $1-2. I needed more variety here than the white mugs!! I’ll donate these guys to Goodwill when we move – or keep them for future kids/pets!
Sweet nectar –
See you from the Shore!!

I love the elliptical – even more so when it’s within walking distance 😉
Breakfast sounds amazing, but the beach sounds EVEN BETTER! Enjoy every second Kath! You deserve it. Can’t wait to hear about all of your sandy shenanigans!!

p.s. all this talk about “future” kids/pets – what’s on yours and Matt’s mind about that? Still considering a daschaund? (They’re the best dogs ever.) 🙂
Kath says
Just hypothetical for now!! Kids in 2 years? Not thinking about either until we’re settled in Cville and the bakery is profitable…which might take a while!
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
Beauuutiful breakfast!
I’ve never been on an elliptical machine – tbh, I’m not certain what one is! I’ll stick to my runnin 😛
Have a good day!
Christie says
You’ve said before that you would never have a treadmill. I have one and I have to tell you just as there are times you would never go to the gym there are plenty of times I would never run outside or go to the gym. I live in Oklahoma so the weather is rarely conducive to running outside. Also, you can run at whatever time of day and safety is not a concern. I also enjoy exercising at home to get in my tv watching. I like killing two birds with one stone as I rarely have time to sit and watch a show. I also enjoy going to the gym from time to time, for a cycle or weight class but I definitely prefer to get it done at home. If you were exercising frequently at home I think you would naturally increase your intensity. Whatever piece of equipment you have it’s a great investment!

Have a wonderful trip — and your breakfast looks amazing because that is one of my favorite cereals!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
have fun kath! sounds like you’ve had a great start to a beautiful beach day 🙂

Drive safe! Hope it’s an easy trip, ending with lots of beautiful summery warmth. My in-winter-ness is might envious! 😛
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
My home workouts are always less intense. I think it’s not having a bunch of people alongside you moving around too. I find that when our condo gym is busy I get a better workout–weird.
The family photo of the bears just came up on your side bar–made my morning. Have a great time at the beach!
Erin says
Everything’s better when you can walk to it. 😉 You should see how much $$ you spend a gym membership and whether by buying an elliptical, you’d end up saving in the long run. Might be worth it, especially if you ever have to drive to the gym (time, gas money, environment).
Evan Thomas says
Enjoy the beach! The weather is perfect for it.
Wei-Wei says
I think I’d want a stationary bike at home. I wonder why your workouts are less intense at home – have you figured out why? Have fun at the beach! I’m jealous D: It’s raining today 🙁

Hey Kath this has nothing to do with this post but I could not find the post where you bought your camelbak and I am thinking about investing in one since my marathon training is now up to longer runs than I am use to. What brand did you buy and is it uncomfortable at all to run in?
Kath says
i got the Charm, which I think is just for running. I love it!
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
I have to give myself a challenge to make at home workouts more intense. We are definitely thinking of a treadmill since the winters up here are brutal and so can some of the summers.
Have fun at the beach. You always seem to enjoy all the fun.

When my mom quit the gym and bought an elliptical… she basically stopped working out. I think its because she feel like she had to plan it into her day anymore to go someplace and workout. It’d probably be different for you; it definately was for me! I workout so much now that we have a recumbent bike and a couple dumbbells. I honestly don’t think I would work out half as often if I had to go to a gym!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I have always wondered about an elliptical. I hate treadmills. We got one as a git a couple of years ago and it is now in the garage! I like working out at home because I think if I had to go somewhere…I would never do it. Have a great day! I am glad you are enjoying your freedom now!
mal says
ahh, the shore <3
Kellie says
I have debated about getting an elliptical at home, but when you have kids, they beauty of the gym is that you can get a workout in without interruptions. I am not sure I would use it as much as I would want to if I had it at home.
kalli@fitandfortysomething says
i would love to have a treadmill in the house. whip out a quick hit workout and you are done! enjoy the beach 🙂
The Wife of a Dairyman says
A great start to your weekend 🙂
Amber K says
I wish arctrainers weren’t so expensive because I LOVE them at the gym. I can get such a better workout than with an elliptical. But I would probably keep my gym membership when I have kids because they have child care and I could work out without getting bugged!
Alyssa says
Kath,
Let me say how EXTREMELY JEALOUS I am right now! Have so much fun at the beach, I miss the FL beaches, but can’t help but love my CO mountains!! Enjoy!

p.s. Also, I had some questions about your open sky store. Let me know if you would be willing to email back and forth and answer some of them. Thanks!!

I bought those bowls at Target for the girls yesterday…but in pink, of course! You’d have thought they won the lottery!

Have a good trip to the beach.
Michelle @ Turning Over a New Leaf says
Good point about having the elliptical nearby when you have kids. I’ve never really gotten into the idea of having home gym equipment because I get bored of doing the same thing over and over, but I guess if you’re only using it as supplemental, it wouldn’t be bad!
Kaz says
Have a safe and fun trip! 😀
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
I have the perfect set up at college cause our gym is two blocks away! I get the conviency of it, but also I still work out VERY hard.
Gretchen says
I got a treadmill this year and I absolutely love it. My hubby works odd hours, I work 8-5, and I have 2 kids. There is really no time in my day for the gym. During the cooler months (rarely in TX) I would walk at a trail close to my office during lunch breaks, but sometimes that’s all I had and if the weather was bad, I got nothing. It was really hard for me to even consider bundling my kids up during the winter this year and making them walk/ride in the stroller while I got a workout in. So, in came the treadmill and I can get regular workouts with it. I can walk/run anytime day or night and I don’t have to worry about travel time or getting “ready” to get to a gym. It’s one of the best investments for health that I have made.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
my uncle has a gym in his beach house, where i sometimes housesit, and i have to say i NEVER use it when it’s just downstairs. i think part of exercising for me is driving to the gym, and being trapped there and having no choice BUT to get it over with. but this is coming from someone who dreads working out!

love hearing people in a good bumbling mood;)
breakfast looks yummm! xx
Melissa @ For the Love of Health says
I have always wondered about owning an elliptical too. It is my favorite machine at the gym for my days off of running. Amazing looking breakfast! Have a fab day! And check out my blog for my giveaway! 🙂
Annie@stronghealthyfit says
I’ve realized lately just how EASY the elliptical is. I try to make it harder by increasing the resistance and the incline, and not relying on it too often for my cardio 🙂
Your yogurt bowl looks yummmmmmy.
Meagan says
Hey Kath! Today I was at TJMAXX and found CALI BOWLS! I bought the Cali stack in light blue color for only 14.99! I am so excited 🙂 There was also BISCOFF there too, so I was definitely thinking of you. New bowls are so much fun! I was at a kitchen store last night too and got the CUTEST mini spooon. It really helped me enjoy my yogurt and nut bowl this morning for breakfast.

Fun!!

I actually own an elliptical in my basement. Our gym was selling the “old models” for $400! I really love having it, it’s perfect for early mornings, bad weather, and cross training days.
Wendy says
Never say never! As a mom of two small kids, some days the ONLY way I am able to get in a run was on my home treadmill. This was especially true when I stayed home with them full-time and when I was training for races. I think if I were to invest in a second piece of home workout equipment it would be a rowing machine – they are relatively inexpensive, and give you a good total-body workout.
Enjoy your well-deserved beach vacation!!
Stacey @ Tipping the (Kitchen!) Scales says
At home exercise equipment sounds like such a good idea, especially for the winter. Alas, I’m not sure I have the funds or the space to accommodate it so I’ll just have to stick running outside. Brekkie looks fab as per!
Monique@She's Going The Distance says
I love that you bought bowls just for your blog haha. That’s a great idea 🙂 I’d feel too weird not having matching sets… but I have too much stuff anyways, so maybe it’s good I don’t…?
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
I have a gym setup at home that includes a spinning bike just like the ones in the cycle classes. I also have a gym membership. It’s nice to have options and have a way to get in a quick workout at home, it’s totally worth having workout equipment at home.
maxinthegym says
Breakfast sounds/looks amazing! Have a safe trip 😀
I think having an elliptical in your house would be so helpful. My friend has a treadmill so even though it’s at night (and it’s not very safe to go outside) he can still get his mileage in.
Sarah says
I’m actually motivated to go the gym and love working out, but whenever I house sit for a house with a home gym I am pretty disinterested and I rarely used my parents’ treadmill when I lived with them. I don’t know what it is, but I just prefer the gym–it feels like a fun part of my routine vs being at home which feels like drudgery. However, my dad (who is as equally motivated as I am when it comes to fitness) rides on a bike trainer several mornings a week in his basement while listening to books on tape and he can actually be more reliable with his workouts there than with the gym because he only needs to get up a little earlier and doesn’t need to get a ton of stuff organized. It was interesting to read everyone’s diverse comments and experiences with this! I’m curious what you will end up deciding.
Liz says
Having an elliptical @ home is awesome. It is the easiest way for me to fit in a workout. You should definitely consider getting it.
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
Some mornings I wish I had an elliptical or treadmill at my house (especially in the middle of winter!) but I really like going to the gym! Something about going there gives me more motivation during a workout.
Jen in MN says
Just chiming in to say that I DO have a kid, and I also have an elliptical at home! (in my basement). It is wonderful to have an easy workout option available right here in the house so that while my daughter naps or is sleeping at night (she goes to bed early), I can get a workout that doesn’t involve having to leave the house. Many evenings my hubby & I take turns getting out of the house for walks/runs after our little one is in bed – but it’s super handy to have the at-home option too. Start an elliptical fund now, you’ll want one! (-:
Kelsey @ CleanTeenKelsey says
Mm, your breakfast looks so good. I love your combinations; they’re so awesome! Also, that bowl is very cute. I really need to get some cute bowls. 🙂
MelanieF says
I bought an elliptical 2 years ago, and it was the best investment I made. It’s an easy way to get a good workout. I also have free weights to complete my workouts. I was just tired of driving back and forth to the gym. And I also walk on the days that I’m not on the elliptical.
