It rained and rained today so I decided to forfeit my workout to the rain gods.
That is until the skies cleared up at 5pm! I’d been working at my computer all afternoon and a walk sounded awesome, so I donned my headphones and podcasts and went on a 45 minute power walk around the neighborhood! Totally reclaimed the day.
Uncle Sam Strawberry (which is from last year’s Healthy Living Summit, I believe!), banana and milk for a snack.
And later on: a duel.
We had leftovers planned for dinner. To each his/her own!
Here’s what we were armed with:
- Cooked brown rice
- Cooked millet
- Black beans + corn
- Eggs
- Goat cheese
- Cheddar cheese
- Carrots
- Spring mix
- Green beans
- Frozen peas
Two pans (er, one pot, one pan)
Rice, peas + beans for me
Millet, black beans, corn, carrots for him.
Both had eggs stirred in and cheese on top. Check out Matt’s cheese!
Mine ended up with goat cheese and Doug’s Nuts on top!
The nuts gave the whole dish a mapley aroma that mixed with the egg and reminded me of brunch.
Deep inside:
Check out Matt’s monster!! I took one bite and nearly spit it back out because of the carrots!?!!?! I ate carrot for lunch yesterday, but these shredded ones did NOT sit well.
Wish dish would you prefer?
I’m actually not having a very good night, physically. Nausea hit me before dinner and I don’t know why! I had a snack with protein, carbs and fat, I drank water all day long, I took my meds at lunch. So odd, but I can’t seem to shake it.
There is one cure that almost always works. It starts with ice and ends with cream.
You gotta go what you gotta do…
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
A girls’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do, right?! Go get that ice cream!
Kaila @healthyhelperblog! says
Wow! Tough choice! Both dishes look delicious! I love throwing meals together like that! I think I would have been happy with either result!
emily says
Yours! Matt’s sounds good but nothing trumps goat cheese.
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
Just polished off some ice cream! Both dishes look goood 😀
Justeen @ Blissful Baking says
Hope that ice cream makes you feel tons better! 🙂 Feeling nauseous is no fun 🙁
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
The goat’s cheese wins it for me! Sometimes throw together meals are the best…a little bit of everything you love all rolled up into one! Finishing up with ice cream just tops the meal!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
oh gosh, both your dinners look delicious, and although his is super cheesy, I think I’d choose yours!
Elizabeth Whitehill says
Yours looks delish!!!
Sorry about the sickness!! rough stuff! I just have to give my two cents…sorry if its annoying. Have you tried lemons with your nausea? I used to keep them on hand and when it hit hard, it helped SO much to just cut them open and smell them, lick the lemon and it seemed to take the edge off.
Hope it eases very soon!!
Jennifer says
I know someone else that swore that the smell of lemons helped a lot.
KathEats says
I have – lemon drop candy works especially well
Steph says
Hope the ice cream helps! I have a few friends whose nausea gets worse in the evenings. I hope tomorrow is better for you.
Laura Jane @ Recovering Chocoholic says
I would totally go for the ice cream! I’m sure it will cure you.
Maria@ Sinfully Nutritious says
Don’t worry, you will be turning the corner to feeling normal again soon. Sounds like you already have a picky eater! 😉
Both dinners look great.
The Mrs @ Success Along the Weigh says
I want to love goat cheese but I have to really be in the mood for it so tonight Matt’s gets my vote. Don’t let him get a big head about it though. 😉
Feel better. We had a little ice cream therapy ourselves today. The world seemed brighter!
Grace @ Healthy Dreaming says
Both of the meals look great! I wouldn’t be able to choose unless I tasted it!
Hope you feel better!
Silvia @ skinny jeans food says
Well, as long as the baby does not demand stout, which could also a possibility, ice-cream is not too bad 😉
KathEats says
That’s what Matt had for dessert 🙂
Joss (Jocelyneatsfresh) says
I think i would have to go with his dish…:P
Enjoy your icecream!
Brie @ Brie Fit says
Did you get enough sleep last night? I tend to have a harder time with nausea if I don’t get enough sleep the night before. It’s been a rough day over here too!
KathEats says
I did last night, but not tonight!
Sarah says
YOURS oh baby looks great
Michelle (Better with Berries) says
I’m going to have to say that yours looks much more appetizing 🙂 Although the cheese on Matt’s does look delicious!
britt says
i would pick matt’s dish. i think its the cheese. and the greens. mmmm!
enjoy the ice cream. it cures everything 🙂 hope you feel better soon!

My nurse told me to go to the drugstore and get these wrist bands called “seabands”. They do not contain medication. They are terri cloth wrist bands that have a metal button that sits at your accupressure point under the wrist. Supposed to help with nausea. They are called seabands because you wear them if you are on a boat and tend to get sea sick. I wear them when we fly. Maybe it’s psychological but I think they help. One of my other friends used to keep an umeboshi plum in their mouth. They are really salty. You can get them in the health food store. I think they are pickled japanese plums. Ginger may help but for all the above, check with your dr to make sure it’s OK. Good old saltines and ginger ale helped me alot. I used to get sick only at night go figure. Put the food in the oven then run from the smell. So many things are changing all at once. It will blow over on it’s own. Hang in there.
KathEats says
I have them! I wore them all of weeks 7-9 and then things got better so I stopped. I should remember to get them out in the afternoons
Anita says
I still think you are the best. This too shall pass.
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
Both dishes look great. I really enjoy mixed bowls like that. Yogurt with a bunch of stuff on top. Rice with stuff on top. I love all the different flavor combinations. I really hope that nausea stops soon. That is not a good feeling at all.
Annie @ Naturally Sweet Recipes says
I also love the seabands!! They are amazing and help with car sickness too. But sometimes a bowl of ice cream does the trick too. 🙂 Those dishes look amazing!
Cait's Plate says
Ugh, sorry you’re not feeling great…hopefully that ice cream does the trick and you’re back to feeling 100%!
Cheri says
Enjoy the ice cream.. i had morning sickness all 9 months of both of my pregnancies, it was horrible. I only had a gain of 5 pounds with my son and 13 pounds with my daughter. I weighed less after delivery than I did before getting pregnant each time…. but anyways… ice cream was the only thing that I could keep down… and fixing a rootbeer float with vanilla ice cream was my go too every day. 🙂
KathEats says
Wow – sounds rough!
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
Matt’s dinner sounds great! Ice cream is always a great cure all. Have a great evening!
Brittnie (A Joy Renewed) says
Would choose the goat cheese…every time! 🙂 Enjoy every bite of that ice cream.
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I’ve been nauseous too but mine is because of a migraine. I wish ice cream would fix it… enjoy yours and have an extra scoop for me! 😉
Clare @ SweetnSimple says
Mmm.. close but I think I’d go yours! Hope you’re feeling better soon 🙂
Julie says
Have you asked your doctor about Zofran? It’s given to chemo patients to combat nausea and is also safe for use during pregnancy. It can be a LIFE SAVER if you’re suffering severe ALL DAY sickness. Mine struck at night after dinner…many a dinner was up chucked during my first trimester. Glad those days are over! Hope you feel better.
KathEats says
I actually do have some Zofran on hand, but the B6 + unisom seems to be managing it well enough that I haven’t felt the need to switch. It’s so unpredictable!
Matt says
I vote for Matt’s dish, and he is handsome too
Erin says
Funny!!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
ha!
Jamie @ Thrifty Veggie Mama says
I am just catching up on my reading and just noticed that you are pregnant! Congrats! Sorry about the morning sickness. I had it with all 3 pregnancies and it is not fun. But hang in there. It gets easier. Each time mine magically disappeared around the 3-4 month mark.
Totally reason to eat whatever you feel like though 🙂 My doctor even confirmed it!
Jennifer says
Dang…I wish ice cream had helped my nausea. My one cure was SLEEP! When I couldn’t take it a minute longer I would just go to sleep. 🙂
Lauren says
First off, I hope you start to feel better soon. I have nausea often (definitely NOT pregnant though 😉 ) so I know how miserable it is! 2nd: Ice cream fixes everything. 3rd: we may (hopefully) be coming down to Cville on lunchtime Saturday through sometime Monday so I was wondering if you would like to go for a walk or get lunch sometime on one of those days? Was going to email you but since it’s not definite, I haven’t yet. I can let you know if we can or can’t make it sometime tomorrow….
KathEats says
Hey Lauren,
I think I’ll be at the bakery on Saturday AM for a while – possibly through lunch?
Lauren says
Turns out, we are coming down tomorrow. So I think the plan is for us to stop and get lunch at GH tomorrow. Hope to see you! 🙂
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
I’m on your side for this one! Looks great!!
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
my cure all starts with cup and ends with cake 🙂
Heidi Bundles Of Hugs says
Both look good .. I’d probably goes for yours first then his. Which did you like better?
Christine says
Wow, tough call. I was going to say I’d prefer his by a long shot, then you went and put the nuts and goat cheese on yours. I’d have to vote for yours.
Dana says
I vote yours! Anything topped with goat cheese is a definite win for me…. Both look quite delicious though! I love mixing and matching leftovers for dinner!
I hope you are feeling better!
Jenny@vegetarianhatesvegetables says
Yours!
Amy M says
Hey there! I have been following your blog for a few months now and really enjoy it! Just want to add one more suggestion for the nausea – feel free to ignore. I had lots of nausea during the first trimester (it eventually went away though, thank goodness!). One thing that really helped me was Odwalla Blueberry B Monster Smoothie. I think the B vitamins were really helpful somehow. Best of luck and hope you start feeling better soon!
Lexi @ Cura Personalis Foodie says
Yours! Goat cheese is like the insta-win button!
Khushboo says
If ice cream is medicinal, don’t fight it…just grab a spoon 🙂
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
I’m a fan of most of Matt’s choices for food. Him and I see eye to eye on bread + cheese. 😀
Hope your sick feeling subsides with the ice cream remedy. Have you tried ginger root tea?
KathEats says
Unfortunately ginger is off my list from those horrid lentils I made early on
Mama Pea says
Peas for the WIN!!!
KathEats says
🙂
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
So sorry you’re sick…the early evening nausea was the worst and most pronounced for me. Nothing worked for me..other than telling my hubs to give me a foot massage, a back massage, saltine crackers and ginger ale. Repeat.
Good luck!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I like I like to have half of each of yours – they both look so good! 😉
Haley says
Kath, My sister is 12 weeks pregnant and has only gained 1/2 lb. since she found out she was pregnant b/c of her nausea! Others may have already shared with you about Preggie Pop Drops? My sister is swearing by them. You can order them on Amazon or even find them at Babies R Us and JCPenney, but they’ve helped her out and their natural/organic. I’m sorry you’re having trouble with that!
KathEats says
I have those and they are great! Only a temp. fix though
Sarah@The Flying ONION says
The goat cheese would have been my final decision! Yum! 😀
Hope you’re feeling eons better this morning after a good night’s rest!
Katie says
How many weeks along are you? Sorry to hear that you weren’t feeling well, but I think maybe your body is just reminding you that it is carrying a baby and needs to rest. I never had “morning sickness” but I would become nauseous in the afternoon or evening. With both of my pregnancies I kept active, worked out every day and often didn’t even feel pregnant but then my body would give me a reminder to rest or eat or hydrate. Pregnancy is a perfect time for women to listen to and respect their bodies. Your dinners both look delicious, but I think I’d choose yours although you both did an awesome job coming up with delicious healthy dinners with leftovers. We love doing that our house. In fact my kids get excited about leftover nights. Hang in there and hopefully you will start feeling better. Ice cream did seem to work like magic when I was nauseous, a spoonful or two always made me feel better, I think it was something about the combination of calcium, sugar and coolness that was comforting. Popsicles, frozen yogurt bars, Grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe, bananas, raisins, dried fruit and nuts are other foods that I remember helping.
KathEats says
12 weeks and counting!
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
Both dishes look delicious to me! Ice cream…did you say Ice Cream?! Sounds good to me!
Michaela says
what a fun way to make dinner!
I would prefer Matt´s bowl- without the egg and cheese 😉
How hard it must be to be forced to eat ice cream 😉 Enjoy!
Jen says
A certain amount of nausea is natural and to be expected – no matter how hard you try to do/eat/drink the right things. So don’t worry about being perfect and just keep doing what you’re doing!
elizabeth says
Did you could your millet and brown rice in the rice cooker? How are you liking the rice cooker?
KathEats says
Yes, but I had cooked them earlier in the week. LOVING it!
elizabeth says
Great! I use my pressure cooker all the time, but I have a GF at Surlatable and have always wanted a rice cooker, even though I don’t need one.
elizabeth says
Sorry, I meant cook, not could.
Katie says
Enjoy that ice cream! Well deserved!
Thank you for sharing the pregtastic podcasts- I have been listing to them on my way into work (20 weeks yesterday!) and they are great! 🙂
KathEats says
I am loving them too!! Obsessed even!
Angel7 says
Icecream is the cure to what ails you 🙂
