It’s really hard to put my emotions into words these days, but I actually think I am more relaxed and calm than I was before my due date. It’s like the event already happened – a birthday was celebrated – and now I’m just back to normal life. Except for the fact that there IS still a baby in there!
On the other hand, every morning that I wake up, I’m a little bit surprised that I made it through the night without going into labor. It’s so weird just to wait for your body to FEEL something.
Oats in a jar for breakfast!
White peach oatmeal with chia seeds and raspberries, in a Naturally Nutty Jar, topped with Nature’s Path granola (one of my favorites of all time).
Enjoyed with tea, while Matt sleeps and sleeps!
Pumpkin says hi!
Christine says
I was late with all 4 of my kiddos. It was always a surreal feeling to go past my due date. So much expectation and nerves leading up to the day and then it passes. Hang in there!
Erin says
So glad you are feeling well! I know alot of people that swear by pineapple to bring on labor… can’t hurt to try it. 😉
Meredith says
So hard those last few days! Just put your feet up and relax. It would be a good day to start a new series on DVD – then you’ll have something ready to watch during those long nursing sessions in the first few months! I woke up this morning and the first thing I thought was, “I wonder if Kath had her baby?” 😉
Also – there’s a Wendy’s ad on the sidebar this morning…seems like an ad that conflicts with your blog’s theme of Real Food. Not sure if you get to approve each ad or if an agency takes care of it for you, but thought you’d be interested.
KathEats says
I watched my favorite episode of Gossip Girl this AM 🙂
I’ll look into the Wendy’s, but they do serve real food. Baked potatoes, salads, etc. I hate to get so picky on this stuff. If someone was advertising transfats or artificial sweeteners, I’d have more of a problem.
snw says
What’s your favorite episode? 🙂 I’m halfway through season 4..
KathEats says
Season 2, episode 1!! They are in the Hamptons and it starts with Nate making out with the older woman in the car. I just love that episode – so bright and cheery and full of romance without all the dark scheming : )
Spice Chicken says
I’m with you. While traveling or stuck at airports, one could do far worse than a Wendy’s grilled chicken Go Wrap and side salad.
Jennifer says
Just ate at Wendy’s last night. Had the baked potato and apple pecan chicken salad. Both delicious! I remember getting to my due date and thinking I was done. Not so. 2 weeks later I still had not gone into labor. But you are in the home stretch! Hang in there and best wishes!
Janice says
Haha, i keep expecting to come in here to see something like “The baby is coming!!!” or something like that heh. But of course there will be no way you would have time to blog that while in labor LOL. I cant wait till you have your baby! Im excited for you guys 🙂
KathEats says
The plan is to put up a post when things get going! Unless they get going SO FAST that we have to run to the hospital, but I think that is very very unlikely.
Allie@LiveLaughEat says
I think the baby just wants to hang out in your belly because you keep feeding him such delicious food. He knows he’ll only get milk once he comes out 🙂
KathEats says
Haha true
Ali @ Peaches and Football says
Hi pumpkin!
I remember my brother being 4 days late. It happens more than we hear about because some Drs just decide they need to induce, or people are getting too anxious to wait, etc…
It’s great that you’re staying so calm. Just use this time for any last minute stuff you need to do, read a book, go for a walk, etc… You can tell it’s a boy because he likes to sleep in already 😉
Caroline says
I was 10 days late, so strange to be in limbo land. Aside from the ever annoying “baby yet?!?!” calls and texts daily, It was actually a blessing for us. My husband, who is a chef with terrible hours, was finally off from work and we got a little extra time just the two of us. I had already cleaned the entire apartment in anticipation so all there was left to do was distract ourselves! We ate out at a fancy new restaurant we had wanted to try. I enjoyed a small glass of wine and we celebrated us! We went swimming, bowling, went in a tour of our local brewery….. It was the most fun we’d had together in a long time! Enjoy these final moments, and see it as a gift! After all of these fun activities, touring the nursery with my hubby to make sure he knew where everything was, and stocking the fridge one last time- I went onto labor at the movie theater. You all must need some extra time to get there 🙂 good luck and hang in there! your time will come!
Best,
Caroline
Silvia @ skinny jeans food says
While it is hard to believe that a baby of your is not on time 🙂 I can imagine that you might wish to be back to how you feel right now, no pain, relaxed, calm, a whole lot of pleasant Sunday ahead, once you are really in labor and things drag on. Enjoy your Sunday !
Sarah @ Learning to Feed Yourself says
I am glad you aren’t feeling too anxious!! I feel a little anxious every time I check your blog!
I hope that Pumpkin and the baby get along 🙂

As I’ve heard of more and more women going past their due date, it got me thinking. And in my searching, I came across this – “Sr. Angela Murdaugh says we see so many moms going past 42 weeks because we calculate the due date in a way that sets up too many women to go overdue! Traditionally we calculate using Naegele’s Rule, which was postulated in 1805 and studies have shown the average well-nourished primip goes 10 days beyond that, and a multip goes 5 days beyond that. She advises calculating using Nichols’ Rule, which was written up a few years back in the Journal of Nurse-Midwifery. I don’t remember all the details of how to calculate using it, but she said if nothing else, add 5 days onto the Naegele’s Rule EDD. Since I’ve been doing that I am MUCH closer to actual delivery dates” found here – http://www.gentlebirth.org/archives/postdates.html You have to scroll down a lttle ways to start reading the anecdotal stuff.
Anyways, I post it to say that maybe you weren’t actually due on your due date. Have patience, as I know you are trying to. You’ve done a fantastic job.
KathEats says
Thanks! I’ve definitely heard that the average first time mom goes to 41 weeks, 1 day. I’ll check this out. I don’t think I’ll really start to get anxious until induction is looming…very close to 42.
But what puzzles me is that SO MANY people I know went early! Of the 4 of us in my yoga class due the same week (75% FTM’s), I’m the only one who went past her date – and I’m not even that late yet! My other two friends went at 39 and 39.5 weeks. Hopefully I don’t have to go to 42 weeks to pull the average up 🙂
KathEats says
One other reason why I’m a little surprised is because I knew my exact conception/ovulation date. I tend to think that those who go over had late ovulation and didn’t know it. For example, if I had used my last period, I’d be 13 days overdue by now! I guess ultrasounds can adjust for some of that now, but I’m still a little surprised that even knowing this baby has gestated for 38 weeks he is stilll running late!
Caroline says
We knew our exact ovulation/conception date too! I felt the same way you did but lo and behold – 10 days post date! They know when they’re ready 🙂 Make sure there is nothing lurking in the back of your mind, or some little thing you forgot! My grandmother had me write out a list to make sure there was nothing small we were forgetting. She said that until I felt TRULY ready, he would wait! And he did! I didn’t realize how badly I needed to TRULY relax, stop fussing about every little detail, and spend some time with my hubs. Like you said, you almost feel calmer after the big day passes – like the balloon finally pops and theres relief (sort of!!!!) I totally understand, but the little guy will come when he is ready and when he feels that you are ready! My accupuncturist told me (2days post) that he felt our little man was still actively taking a lot of nutrients from me. He came out 8lb1oz and scored a 9/9 on the apgar test! I think he was getting nice and strong! Im sure your little man is doing the same!
Caroline says
It was also my Fathers birthday the day before we had our son. Everybody kept telling me what a great gift it would be but I kept thinking “he probably wants his OWN birthday!” I went into labor that night and had him the day AFTER! Maybe he was waiting for Karens special day to pass! 🙂
Robyn says
I like Caroline’s point – take care of everything and write evrything down. I was also thinking maybe he’s so used to your routine that he’s comfy cozy. Maybe if you change your routine up, it might make him wonder what’s up. So, for instance, you walk at least a couple of miles every day – what if you didn’t? Maybe eat some things that are vastly different from your norm is. I don’t know. I’m grasping at straws. As for the accuracy of gestation, I really do think it’s individual, as you know. But one thing I did read is that if they’re getting all they need inside, they won’t come out? So, maybe nows the time to indulge in bad pregnancy food. He’ll be like what in the world is this lady doing to me and want out! :0)
KathEats says
Haha. I feel like I’ve walked and rested equally this week. And ate salads and cupcakes and cheesecake! Maybe I should go for a run!?
Robyn says
Hey, it just might work lol! :0)
Lindsay says
Can’t wait to meet the lil one, you are far more patient than I could be;) Every night for me over here in S. Korea is when your blog posts, so at least I rest easy when I find out the wait is still on! Best wishes!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Now he’s going to surprise you!
Colleen says
Maybe ‘Baker’ is showing his personality? Coming out when he feels like it…late. My oldest was 2weeks early and must be early to everything. My second arrived just 7 days early and takes his time, but arrives on time not a minute earlier. And my youngest needed assistance to show her face and doesn’t like to be rushed and has her own schedule(learned that too many morning).
Maggie says
I was 8 days late and I swore I’d go early. I was dilated/effaced for weeks prior. Hang in there, your little one/body knows when the time is right. It is truly a miracle!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I believe Pumpkin wants IN! 😉
Jenica says
The waiting game is tough. But it’ll definitely be over very soon. You’re being so patient!
seana says
I look at your post every morning to see if the baby has come! My son was 2 weeks early and my daughter 2 weeks late. In my eyes, she was a month late b/c I though she would be early like her bro.
amelia says
Yay for another delicious breakfast! It’s going to be a beautiful day here in Charleston. Already 79 and sunny. Crossing my fingers for you that today is THE day, unless he decides to wait for you to labor on Labor day. 😉
Deirdre @ Oh Well Whatever says
I hear ya! I was 10 days late and it is a very strange feeling to get to that date you have been counting down to for 40 weeks and have nothing happen. I too found myself much more relaxed after that day passed. It is our first lesson in being Mommy that baby is in charge and we can’t control all. Perhaps tomorrow, would be kinda fun to go into labor on labor day!
Rachel says
maybe you’ll go into labor on labor day 😉
Cait's Plate says
How does Nature’s Path compare to Cville Cluster? Completely different?
Glad you’re feeling calm, I can kind of understand that. I think I would be the same way. I agree though that the weirdest part of labor would definitely be the not knowing and just having to wait until you “feel” it.
Hang in there!
KathEats says
Totally different!! Chewy doughy verses airy crunch
Cait's Plate says
Good to know! Thank you 🙂
Steve says
Eat a big pizza. That’ll do it! Little one will pop right out.
Well, that’s what the wife of our local pizzeria owner told us, and it worked. 35 years ago.
Elizabeth says
I remember that feeling of just waiting. My son was three weeks late and my daughter was a week late, and I remember always wondering, “Is this it? Is this the moment?” Whenever I’d leave the house, I’d think, “Is it now?” And every time I’d come home without going into labor, I’d feel this odd sense of quiet. It was amazing to me that I just had to sit back and wait for my body to be ready.
KathEats says
Every time I take a shower and get dressed or have a big meal I think “Now would be a good time to start 🙂 ”
And when I’m really hungry for dinner or all sweaty after a workout I think “Give me an hour 🙂 “
Lauren says
The picture of your cat made me giggle. As she’s desparately clawing at the door to come in your taking a picture saying she’s waving to everyone hahaha. She’s probably like, “Mom, please just let me in!”
KathEats says
I can only get good pictures of her through the screen because once I let her in she goes nuts at my ankles!
Lauren says
HA! So really, her waving is her trying to desparately get to claw her way through the door to get to you ankles! PS. I love the name!
Averie @ Averie Cooks says
I think it’s great that you’re able to stay calm, relaxed, and just go with the flow- there’s really not much you CAN do other than that, but I know for me at the end I was just soooo ready and being calm and patient was easier said than done. You are doing so awesome on that front, Kath!
Lizzie says
I am SO excited to see your baby! LOVE reading your blog, I can’t wait.
Cappi says
I don’t even care what you eat now! I’m just checking in for the baby update! Seriously, you really need to tell people your due date is about 10 days AFTER your calculated date so we all relax! You’ve done so GREAT!
Kelsey says
Oh Kath, it’s almost here! I have a couple of different friends going through the same sort of Week 40 waiting game. Your bundle of joy will be here before you know it.
Carol says
Perhaps it would be fitting to have the little peanut on labor day. 🙂 take it easy and have a nice relaxing day while you can!
kim@hungryhealthygirl says
I was late with my first pregnancy too. I hope you go into labor naturally, but I had to be induced. Either way, I’m sure everything will go just the way it is supposed to go. Oats in a jar is definitely a fav of mine. I gave oatless oats a try this morning for the first time. They were pretty good, but I’m still partial to my steel-cut oats.

I thought that I was going to have our baby last night. I had contractions, but then they went away. They made me feel very uncomfortable, though, throughout the night!
http://faithfulsolutions.blogspot.com/
KathEats says
Oooo exciting! How many weeks are you now?
Angel7 says
I am about 38 weeks along — due 9/16/12 — but I feel like I could go sooner. However, I am hoping that I do not have him until either 9/16 or later.

Maybe baby Kerf will appear on Wednesday—-9-5-12! You know 9 + 5 +12 = 26!!!
KathEats says
Haha love it!
Karen says
Great mindset, Kath. It appears all of your blog friends are more anxious than you at this point 😉
To add to the collective effort to convince your little guy to get movin’ I’d like to suggest some gentle prenatal yoga…both of my best friends began labor shortly after yoga sessions.
If nothing else, the deep breathing will help keep you focused in the present. Maybe a little mindful meditation?
In any event, enjoy your Sunday!
Mandy says
I was 10 days late and had to be induced. I think a few days past my due date I gave up on thinking it has to happen! Didn’t really help, but I certainly felt a lot more relaxed.
Good luck! It’s only a week and a half at most anyway, if they even let you go that long.
j3nn says
Hi to Pumpkin!
These days past your due date are valuable life lessons in patience and learning to be calm about things out of your control. I think you are doing the best you can, but I know it must be sooo hard! Hang in there, these extra days of relaxation are probably very much needed. 🙂
Donna Porter says
You have tried walking, spicy foods, magic cupcake…but have you tried sex? I know, TMI, right? You certainly don’t have to blog about it. I was 8 days late with my second and that’s what the doctor recommended and it worked! Just sayin’ 🙂
Spice Chicken says
Pumpkin is sooo cute. I just want to nom nom nom!

Your grandmother is really on edge! Just talked to her. Her first great-grandchild. Can’t blame her!

Remember that show Rosanne, well there was a funny episode where is sister (Jakie) was pregnant and the baby was late so Rosanne tells her to calm down and the Jakie says calm down! There is a 3 day old child inside of me!!! LOL I always think of that when my friends go past their due date.
Here’s the clip…
