When I was younger my mom would always take us back-to-school shopping. We usually had a budget but we could pick the store where we wanted to shop. For me that was the Limited Too (until the whole store turned into glitter!), followed by Abercrombie & Fitch (until the shorts were so short I couldn’t wear them), then onto LOFT, Gap, and J. Crew in later years. If we are lucky, sometimes mom sends us a check in the mail to put towards a new outfit for fall! (Crossing fingers for 2016!)
I always get excited about the changing seasons because I uncover either my warm or cold weather wardrobe. Often I have bought things on sale at the end of the previous season that I don’t remember and find them by surprise. I also try to clean out my current season clothes and consign or give away anything I didn’t wear that year. And managing a growing child’s clothes?! That’s a huge challenge in itself.
thredUP is the perfect solution for buying or selling seasonal clothes for grown-ups and kids alike. As a well-curated online consignment shop they have tons and tons of options, from high-end designer wear to sporty kids clothes.
You’ll find tons of brands you know, and most of the clothing and accessories are 90% off the retail price. Since thredUP is a consignment shop, the items are like new or brand new with tags on. And if you’re looking for a sparkly gold dress in size 6 for an upcoming party you can search, and easily narrow down the huge selection.
As you’re cleaning out your closet each season (which you do do, right?!) simply request and fill up a free thredUP Clean Out Bag and sell back items you gently wore or never loved. Buying secondhand is a great way for us all to share the fashion love, and at the end of 2015 thredUP had upcycled over 14 million items, saving water, energy, and landfill space. (Of course thrift stores appreciate well-loved clothing so much, so donate the rest!)

This fall I needed dresses, and Mazen needed jackets, button-down shirts, and soccer shorts. I found everything we needed and more! I loved that they all came with thredUP tags on them – it made them feel brand new (although the blue and white J. Crew dress was new with tags and only $39!)
Some of the other pieces in my order included: two pairs of sport shorts for Mazen ($5 a piece), two Baby Gap button downs for Mazen ($7 each), jacket for Mazen ($10), raincoat for Mazen ($15), Gap dress ($19), Jessica Simpson dress ($19), LOFT dress ($19), Express dress ($18), Gap cross body purse ($16).
Thanks to thredUP for helping me with my fall wardrobe!

I’ve been meaning to try thredup, but I’ve heard bad press about them – something about them paying very little for clothes that people mail in, or saying they are ineligible, but then selling them for top dollars on their website. I’ve also heard the customer service is bad. Have you heard similar feedback?
KathEats says
I haven’t heard that. I sent in a bag last year and while I didn’t get tons of money for it, it was about the same as when I consigned in person here in town.

I have to say that I am a little disappointed that MORE people will know how awesome ThredUp is from your blog, which means more stuff that I want will be bought! I love that site and never want to buy anything “new” again! It’s awesome!!!

I love your clothes posts! That black dress looks great on you! Also Mazen’s jackets are so cute. Will have to check out ThredUp. Have you tried Poshmark before?
KathEats says
Thanks! No I haven’t heard of Poshmark!

You picked such cute dresses! Did you have to pick a lot out, then send some of them back? I am always nervous they won’t fit me and then I’ll have to pay shipping to send them back. I’d love your input on that.
KathEats says
I was surprised they all fit too. These is the whole bunch! You can return them though.
Kate says
Do you get any sort of site credit on ThredUP if we use your promo code?
KathEats says
I don’t think so…no

Not a fan of Thredup as a consignor… I sell my high end stuff on poshmark for way more… especially good for buying/selling lulu, anthro, madewell and boutique brands. You should check it out!

I wanted to love Thred-up, but I had such a bad experience. I actually printed up their list of things they accept and meticulously went through my stuff to mail them a bag. The only chose about 10 items out of the whole bag and paid me around 1-3$ a piece. I actually went back on and searched for the items they accepted and they had them all listed for $25-$50. I’m with the previous commenters, I can make a lot more selling locally, ebay or consigning.

Look at them calves, girl. Kill ’em!

Thanks for the idea and the promo code. I was able to get part of my son’s Halloween costume (he’s being Marty McFly from Back to the Future) and they had a denim jacket and red vest. Also got him 2 t-shirts and total cost for everything was less than $25! And the denim jacket is Gap!
