Boy I had the heebie jeebies this morning! I woke up at 5 and left the husband sound asleep despite the 5 two-minute snoozes. Given the gas shortage and the fact that I’m low in fuel, I decided to bike alone today. I took my cell phone in case I fell, and actually passed a number of bikers and runners, so I wasn’t that scared. But what I was scared of were spiders!!! I found a rather large one in our door frame as I left (shudder #1) and saw a huuuuge web hanging off our house (shudder #2) as I climbed on my bike. Fall is spider season here and in our old neighborhood they used to hang down from low trees over sidewalks. I usually make the husband ride in front for the reason, but today it was just me. Luckily there are only 2 lay-lowing areas and I just squinted, put my helmet first and rode. I seem to have made it safely!
At the gym I did 30 minutes on the Stairmaster. Well, I’m not sure how much I did because a man accidentally unplugged my machine and brought me to a sudden stop with somewhere between 1 and 10 minutes left. According to my HRM, I probably did more like 35 minutes. I did some stretching (saved lifting for tomorrow when the husband comes) and biked home.
Before I left my stomach was growling so I had an end piece of Rudi’s Honey Wheat with AB + jam. I’m so glad to have bread slices again!
Breakfast was a classic bowl of granola plank-PB oats.
- 1/3 cup oats/milk/water
- Salt + vanilla
- Half a large banana
- 1 tbsp flax
- 1/5 granola plank
- Spoonful PB
Plus a cafe au lait – unsweet. I like it! I think the trick for me to like coffee/tea without sweetener is to just use more milk. Seems reasonable to me.
Mondays are my most longest day on campus because of Organic lab ( 👿 ) but hopefully it will be pretty painless like it was last week. An organized lab is a painless lab. I think what I hate most about chem labs is that I never feel confident in what I’m doing (and they always take so long!) but last week’s prelab was very informative, so it looks like we’re off to a good start.
Adios!

its impressive you switched to unsweet coffee! yay!
have a nice day and good luck with school!

I have INTENSE Arachnophobia, so I fully sympathize with you, Kath!!
That candle has such a fun shape!! Love it.
Best of luck with your long day today!!

I don’t like spiders either, they give me the creepy crawlies.
What kind of PB is that on your oats, it looks so creamy!

Have fun in lab today!
I just switched to unsweet coffee last week after using equal for about 13 years! I agree, the trick is a bit more milk to take away the bitterness.

I tend not to like ANY bugs. But my husband likes to buy plastic ones and tricks me by taping them to the inside of the cabinet so they swing out at me when I open it up!
Hope you day doesn’t “feel” long!

i really need to transition to unsweet coffee too. its so hard!

Aw don’t be scared of spiders, Kath. Just think of Charlotte’s Web!

eww spiders! everytime I have to get my bike out of our shed in the backyard I end up walking through a spider web. I get sooo grossed out!

I completely agree with you about the unsweetened coffee! I just weaned myself off of sugar (in coffee, that is) and it really does taste better now. Amazing how taste buds can adapt so quickly.
I have to tell you that I look forward to your posts every morning…it’s the first thing I look at when I wake up! Just thought you’d like to know 🙂
Best of luck with your schedule today. Orgo has a tendency to control peoples’ lives so I commend you!

I haven’t had oats in almost 2 months! I am trying to delay the first oats of the season because by the time summer rolls around I start getting sick of them, but in the winter it’s the only thing I can eat to warm me up! I’m really missing them though, soon, soon.

I am reading your FAQ’s and I honestly could have written your story (take out the leg surgery and add in three babies (and 4 pregnancy’s- i lost a baby at 5 months and I had gained 5 pounds and did not take it off before I got pregnant with my now 5 month old) I am STRUGGLING to lose the last 7 pounds and I was reading your FAQ’s and you said that the last 10 pounds came off slowly….how slow? I am trying soooooo hard. I eat so healthy I eat approx 1500 calories a day I spin three days a week, run, interval training no desserts and I have three kids (and I am 33)
I started my first pregnancy at 151 and I gained an astonishing 63 pounds. Lost it all and then 14 months later pregnant again and then lost that plus 20 more my 4th pregnancy I had a healthy 35 pound weight gain and I have gotten to where I only need to lose 7 more pounds and the baby is 5 months old and I look ok but its so hard. I lost my weight from my other pregnancy’s with WW but I felt like I was eating just to eat not really caring if I was healthy. So now I am only counting calories and eating very good I went to myfoodpyramid.com and it really helped but I am stuck and FRUSTRATED. If you made it this far and if you read this and have any insight- (i know you are busy too but I just know you know how I feel) Thank you

Is that a vitamin I see? What kind do you take?

Holy &%^#$( Thank you for not posting pictures of the spiders! I have severe arachnaphobia (just that word creeps me out- gaaahhh) and I can’t even get close enough to the buggers to kill them. I have to scream, literally, for the bf to come kill them. An experience like yours would have truly ruined my day.
Heather says
I’m right there with you on the spiders 🙁 But as long as they stay OUTside I’m okay.
Good luck with chem lab today!!

Being from New Orleans, I grew up on cafe au lait. That is all people drink there! They would just put extra milk in it and give it to us as kids…like we needed anymore energy…
runjess says
Spider season!? Is that why there was a huge scary one by my doorknob yesterday? I had to kill it just to get in the house.
rhodeygirl says
awww poor little spideys. don’t be scared of them, think about what they do to all the ickier bugs out there haha! they are our friends! 🙂
have a great day!

Love the shape of your candle! Is it a pear?

Uggghhh spiders. I hate how they all magically appear this season. Once fall is in, I always check the corners of my ceiling before going to bed so I don’t fall asleep with any spiders hiding there that might decide to fall on my head…shudder.
I should try drinking coffee with just milk. I don’t think I’d mind it… but I sure do like the sweetness in there. Sigh.

Kim: it looks like you’re doing a lot of the right things to lose weight. Do you lift any weights though? That is one pretty good way to burn more calories, and is a great addition to cardio workouts (which you have covered).
Kim says
Anne thank you:) I just started lifting 2 weeks ago. I think I am going to start adding in a quick run/ or walk during the day when the youngest is napping….i hope it starts to work.

Does anyone have a good recipe for googey, fudgey low-fat brownies? Every other recipe out there I’ve tried always turns out cakey?

I absolutely love your blogs. I read them everyday, and you have been inspiring me to eat healthier!
Did you know, though, that adding milk to tea can actually negate the effects of the tea’s antioxidants?
I read that a few days ago and found that interesting; tea serves more of a “health” role for me than “hydration” role.

I feel your pain with the spiders…..I live in a suburb of Los Angeles and we get the same thing every fall! Big spiders that hang from the trees….BIG SPIDERS! And I’m sure they are harmless, but still…BIG.

It’s terrible running (or I’m sure riding) in the semi-dark and getting a faceful of spiderweb. Glad that didn’t happen to you this morning! Hope lab is well-organized and goes smoothly.

Christie i.,
EarthFare brand. It IS delicious and creamy. It does have added palm oil and cane sugar, but like I’ve said before, those are natural enough for me and I only eat PB by the tbsp at most.
syl ,
Cool!! Now I have a reason to get my posts up on time!
Kim ,
Sounds like you’re doing everything right – keep up the good work. I found for the last 10 pounds (which took me 9 mos to a year but I wasn’t in a rush) I had to clean up my diet a lot. Less desserts, less extra evening snacks, more focus on fresh foods, on average. But I definitely enjoyed myself along the way, which is why it took me a long time to get there. Maybe you would consider seeing an R.D. to get her/his thoughts on your diet and if you’re eating the right amounts, etc. for your lifestyle?

I ALMOST posted a photo of the one outside but was too scared to go get close to him. I’m glad I didn’t for your sake!

I think it’s a squash?!
Emily ,
Yes, I have heard that about milk. But I grew up drinking tea with milk, so I’d rather just get my antioxidants elsewhere if that’s the case!

Hey Kath,
How long do you do the stairmaster for?? and at what intensity?? Whenever i’m on the stairmaster, it doesn’t feel too much like a workout, although i know it’s probably doing something (I hope!) I do a manual program w/an intensity of 2.
p.s. Did the husband post his recipe for cheesy rolls??
Kath says
Maryam ,
Are you doing the Stairmaster StepMill? That’s the one I do – it’s a moving staircase, not just the little pedal-pusher kind. I normally do level 12 for 30 minutes. It’s HARD. I think the hardest form of cardio I do. I started on level 8 for 20 minutes and worked up to 10 quickly and gradually worked up to 11-12 for 30, sometimes 40, minutes. You need a good magazine to get through!
