This apple cinnamon oatmeal recipe is creamy and scented like an apple pie with cinnamon and vanilla! Top with walnuts and maple syrup.
Back in the early blog days, I used to make a healthy apple cinnamon oatmeal or a pear oatmeal all the time! Whenever I was out of bananas, it was my go-to.
Admittedly I don’t eat oatmeal for breakfast as much as I used to. Because my mornings are more kid focused than the olden days. But I still do love to cozy up with a bowl of oatmeal on the weekends. Birch loves oatmeal, but he doesn’t love a lot of mixins, so this recipe is a good one for me to make as meal prep and enjoy whenever I want (it makes a great snack!)
This homemade apple cinnamon oatmeal will warm you from the inside out! Ground cinnamon, fresh apples, rolled oats, and a garnish of walnuts and pure maple syrup will have you dreaming of your grandmother’s apple pie. I like a Honeycrisp apple for just about anything, but Granny Smith or Gala work too. (Here’s an article on the best apples for recipes.)
I also have this recipe for soft cinnamon apples that would be great on top too!
How To Make Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal
This recipe comes together on on the stovetop in a flash. After you saute the apple, you’ll combine everything in the pot and, like most KERF-oatmeal recipes, stir until oatmeal reaches your desired consistency!
I most often make my oatmeal with half whole milk and half water for the perfect blend of creaminess and cooking time. You can use all milk or water if you’d prefer.
Feel free to use any plant-based milks to make it dairy free or gluten-free oats if you need that option. You could also make this with steel cut or instant oats – just cook those how you normally would and cook the apples on the side.
Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Recipe
Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Ingredients
- 1 cup old fashioned rolled oats
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 cup water
- Pinch of kosher salt
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 an apple, chopped
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Chopped walnuts, maple syrup or brown sugar to garnish
- Coconut oil (for cooking, you can sub butter!)
Instructions
Step 1: Cook the apple
Add a few teaspoons of coconut oil to the bottom of a pot and sauté the apple until caramelized and soft. You can use butter here too if you don’t have coconut oil.
Step 2: Add oats, milk, water, salt, and cinnamon
Add oats, milk, water, salt, and cinnamon and turn heat to medium high heat.
Step 3: Stir!
Stir frequently until oatmeal reaches desired consistency.
Step 4: Stir in vanilla
I always stir in the vanilla at the end so it’s the most aromatic!
Step 5: Serve and add toppings
Portion into bowls and top with walnuts, a drizzle of maple syrup, and a light dusting of cinnamon to garnish.
