Where oh where has my appetite gone ? My friend had to cancel lunch so I ate at home instead. It was 1:30 before I started getting hungry, but I still didn’t really want to eat food, and nothing was really that appealing. I decided on a salad (not sure why of all things that was appealing?) and enjoyed it as much as I could:
- Spinach
- A carrot
- Leftover balsamic broccoli
- Raw zucchini
- Single serving cottage cheese
- Blueberries
- Toasted almonds
- Annie’s Maple Ginger dressing
On the side: two itsy bitsy plums from the farmer’s market
And the last five Kashi crackers in a box:
Just as I sat down the sun decided to come out 🙂
I’m going to run a few errands at the mall and am hoping to go for a long walk with a new magazine this afternoon as my exercise. I agree I probably shouldn’t go to the gym to spread my germs.
Calling All Boston Readers!
I’m coming up to your city August 21-24 and hope to organize a blog dinner for Friday, August 22 .
Send me an email to KathEats at Gmail dot com if you’re interested in joining my sister and me for a get together!
Sam says
Ah Kath! I’m from Boston but will be out of the country until the 26…Have fun though!
Rachel says
Feel better, Kath!
JD says
Hope you feel better. Thanks for not being one of those fanatics that HAVE to come to the gym and get everyone sick.

hi kath –
i noticed this weird thing about your website recently — if i go to your webpage, the material doesn’t seem to “refresh”/show new posts unless i click on the banner…it’s been happening for the past several days now. not sure if it is my computer? or something about your blogging software?
Justy2003 says
Jealous I don’t live in Boston 🙁
I’m making tofu stir fry tonight and this will be my first time making tofu! I bought the firm kind. Any hints/tips/tricks to making it yummy? I can’t screw this one up otherwise the boyfriend will never try it again! 😉
I’ve tried to do a little research on cooking with it and I’m planning on just stir frying the tofu with the veggies…and pressing it beforehand. And with the leftover tofu I’ll try baking it cuz some of the blogs had some good looking baked tofu!
Thanks for any help you all can offer!
amanda says
Not sure if you already picked a dinner location in Boston but there’s a new raw gourmet restaurant in the North End neighborhood of the city called Grezzo Restaurant and it seems it would be someplace you might enjoy: www.grezzorestaurant.com
magpie says
Looks like a great salad though 🙂
Justy – use sesame oil! Tofu is amazing when you stir-fry it in sesame oil.
nicole says
Kath – Do you watch the amount of fruit you eat? I see you eat a lot but small amounts. I sometimes get concerned I am eating too much with all the great fruit during the summer. Anyone else?
Chandra (Eating to Live) says
That salad looks *so* good! I love the incorporation of the berries. All those antioxidants should cleanse you out! Hope you feel better soon.
Have a nice walk 🙂
Claire says
Hi Kath
I may be able to do the Boston blog dinner but just need to figure out when I am leaving Martha’s Vineyard. I would love to meet you though!

smilesara–That happened to me! But only on my roommates computer. It was last week and it showed me June 30th post. I couldn’t figure out how to change it. I went to my laptop and all was fine and on the correct date. So must be your computer?!

Nicole,
I was just going to ask Kath the SAME thing! I too,eat lots of fruit! I always eat a whole banana, 2 peaches at one time, a serving of berries would be a heaping cup, etc. Thanks, Kath for answering!
p.s. I always eat 1/2 cup oats and don’t get that full! Many days I make 3/4 cup serving. Anyone else enjoy a big bowl of oats? 🙂
Angie says
Hey Kath,
For your next trip you should come to the Minneapolis area! I would love to go to your blog dinner! 🙂 Enjoy your long walk!
Ryane says
Ooh la la, I think I could make the Beantown dinnahhh on the 22nd!
And darnit, Kath, follow me back on Twitter – ha.
PS. It’s not quite Fiber One, but there’s a new frosted mini wheat cereal flavor…. Blueberry Muffin. And it is quite amazing, and keeps me going all morning. I’m on my second box in two weeks. I’m thinking of mixing it with the strawberry one – how cute.
KellyA says
Kath! Come to NYC please! I really want to meet you!
BethT says
Ryane, I LOVE that blueberry muffin cereal. I have been eating it as a snack. Reminds me of a healthy version of Booberry!
bethb says
You can never have too much fresh fruit! Don’t worry about eating too much. There are much worse things to eat a lot of!
Hil says
Nicole–I think Kath has it right: eat fruit often, but eat one serving at a time and not three or four. Fruit is great for you and tastes delicious, but if you eat it as “free food,” the calories will add up.

Hey there. If you enjoy historical fiction try Ines of My Soul by Isabel Allende.
The book is set in the 1500’s and is about this woman that gets together with the man who conquered Chile. It is very good. You can actually look up the main character of this book on Wikipedia: Inés de Suárez

Justy:
I always “squeeze” all the water out by putting my tofu underneath layers of paper towels and then putting my cast iron skillet on top of it for 1/2 hour. I almost always do this first, then mariante overnight to give it the best flavor, but it should work fine if you just toss it in tonight.
I LOVE IT!
Wish I lived in Boston too :O(
Kath says
(I gotta get to Justy before she makes dinner – more comments later!)
Justy2003,
I would HIGHLY recommend baking the tofu and stir-frying the veggies and tossing them all together at the end. I have had such bad luck stir-frying it with it crumbling apart and all. Here was the baked post I did:

as always, very pretty salad, kath.

when I stir fry tofu it ends up looking like ground tofu- but still delish! Kath’s baking method may be better for presentation!
Sidi says
When are you coming to Montreal?
Kelly L. says
Does anyone else hate it when you don’t have an appetite? I love the hungry feeling and then eating. I don’t know why it bothers me when I’m not hungry. I guess I love food so much that it more enjoyable when you want it.
Rose Huber says
I love topping a salad with blueberries – it gives the salad a nice sweetness, and it looks beautiful!
I will echo the comments of others and say – when are you coming to the DC/Baltimore area? 🙂
PS: My boyfriend will be in Boston on August 25, and he has seen your blog before. I told him it’s too bad he wasn’t going a few days earlier – he could have served as a liaison for me 🙂

aw, i’ll be at a wedding that weekend, i’m so sad i won’t be in town for the blog dinner. hopefully you’ll come visit your sis again soon and arrange another get together.

Hey Kath, you should invite Cristen from Eat Like Me to go to your dinner…I bet she knows all the best healthy restauants there!!

I’m coming in late on this but I had to throw in one more comment on the airborn discussion from yesterday~
I think they may have gone overboard on their advertising, plus people these days are disgustingly sue happy, hence the lawsuit. However, there is nothing wrong with a big dose of vitamins when you feel an illness coming on and that’s exactly what it provides, I still think it’s a good product!
Suzanne says
Justy2003-
Oh! I just had tofu stir-fry a few minutes ago!
Sorry if this is too late (you might have already cooked yours)….
I have a no fail way to do tofu stir fry:
(1) Buy snow peas and broccoli and a package of frozen stiry fry veggies (I get Trader Joe’s).
(2) Take the tofu out of the package and put press a dish towel (clean of course!) on top and put something heavy like a baking sheet on top to press out the water. Leave it like that for 20 min.
(3) Steam the snow peas and broccoli and set aside. (this is to get it mostly cooked)
(4) Pour a little sesame oil in a wok and stir fry the frozen veggies until cooked through.
(5) Add in the broccoli and snow peas and stir fry for another minute.
(6) Add in the tofu and cook for a few minutes.
(7) Then for the magic ingredient – add some Trader Joe’s Soyaki or Island Soyaki and cook for a minute. (If you don’t have this, you must get it! I use it for everything! stir fry, chicken, fish, etc.)
If you don’t have access to a Trader Joe’s – add soy sauce, garlic, and some more sesame oil. Hot sauce if you wish too!
sorry for the long post – just wanted to share a yummy, easy way to do tofu stir fry!
Let us know how yours turned out! 🙂

Breakfast question!
I’m now on a schedule where I’ll be eating breakfast at around 5:30am and then lunch at around 2:30pm. In between, I’m working at a job that involves constant activity and literally no sitting down for 8 hours. It’s very rare that I have time to eat during this time, and on the rare occasion I can, the most that is appropriate is a piece of fruit. Anyway, my question is what kind of breakfast should I have in the morning in order to last me throughout the day? I want to last the day without being hungry (as much as possible), but also keeping in mind that I’ve got a full day left after work and don’t want to eat too many calories, as I’m trying to lose a few pounds!
KatieTX says
You have to eat something else besides fruit; that is 9 hours without eating! Add protein..string cheese, boiled egg, bread slathered with pb to keep you full. You will slow down your metabolism and wreck your weight loss if you go this long without eating. Try to eat one protein packed/fruit combo every 4 hours while standing. With some planning, it will be easy. You can do it! So for breakfast oatmeal or eggs would be your best bet. Try to eat a huge breakfast like 500 calories to keep you going especially if your job is active!
Kath says
smilesara ,
Oh my – thanks for telling me. How long ago did you notice? I set up a new program to analyze my site traffic and I wonder if that is interfering. Has anyone else had a problem? Good to hear that KatieTX was able to fix the problem.
amanda ,
I think we do have a restaurant, but I will keep this for perhaps another night or dinner or if ours falls through. Thanks!
nicole ,
I don’t really watch it but do try to have other food groups with each meal too. I wouldn’t eat just fruit for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being a little fruit heavy when all this great stuff is in season.
Claire ,
Hope you can come!
Angie, KellyA, Sidi,
I would come if I could get there for free!
Rose Huber,
Your liasion – lol!!
lucy ,
I’m sure I’ll be back!
Christin ,
Gosh, Cristin’s a real celebrity!! I’m way too shy to invite her, but it would be fun to meet her. I’ll keep my eye out for her and Bruce while I’m there 🙂
D,
I’m oatmeal biased, but that’s what I’d recommend. Complete with lots of mix-ins and toppings. Make sure to get some fat because i think that’s what sticks with me longest. I’d pack as much into that one bowl as you can and hope it lasts you most of the way. Maybe have some nuts or trail mix in your pocket for nibbling towards the end of your shift?
Kath

Suzanne: Thanks for the recipe/tips! I’d already cooked and eaten mine by the time I got to your comment, but I’ll keep some of those in mind for next time! And unfortunately there are no Trader Joe’s around here in Houston 🙁 The tofu stir fry still turned out great though…and the boyfriend liked it, including the tofu! 😀
