Scary! We’ve got the perfect storm out there – midsummer Thunder + Lightening! I thought it was just our neighbors truck revving until I started to see the flash of lights every few seconds. Now it’s rattling the house!
Now, where did I leave off?
Around 2:00 Kelsey and I decided to do YogaDownload in our classroom! It was empty and we closed the door and turn down the lights and did a great 30 minute Hip Opening Flow (I think #4). I can see pre-Foodservice yoga becoming a regular activity….
Here are all of my packed snacks. PB Larabar, YouBar, Strawberries, Trail Mix, Apple.
I ate the Strawberries at 5:00 and then cracked open the YouBar at 6:30. But much to my disappointment, the YouBar was all glued to the wrapper. It would have been gross to be pulling it off with my teeth during class, so I put it away and got out the LaraBar. I’m not sure what I’ll do with the YouBar goo. Oatmeal? (I didn’t eat the trail mix or apple.)
I did get one of my tests back and was very disappointed 😥 A lot of the questions were numbers + stats, and I got them wrong. And a few were just strange. Bummer.
But I came home to a fun surprise!
Pop Chips!!
Have you heard of them? All the info: Popchips.com. These girls LOVE them. (And I have never seen a more high quality music video!!!!)
So I knew I had leftover navy beans on the menu tonight, but I wanted to try the Pop Chips too, so I made a tasting plate meal. I tried the Salt + Pepper ones to start with a simple flavor:
I don’t think I have an opinion yet. I’m going to save it for my next bag. I didn’t dislike them, but they weren’t the most amazing things ever. They were really kind of like pork rinds! But I can see how they will grow on me, so I’ve got to try another flavor in the next few days.
1 bag (this pile) was only 100 calories –
I turned about half a cup of navy beans into insta-baked beans with some Country Bob’s, ketchup and Worcestershire.
And incorporated some veggies with a Sabra hummus bowl –
Hello broccoli!
Per Wednesday late-night solo dinner fashion, I photographed and plopped myself on the couch with a House Hunters. I was really hungry when I sat down at 9:00 and now am too full to want to get in bed at the moment!
And had this piece of White Chocolate Cherry Swirl for dessert. I set off the smoke alarm and hopefully did not wake the Baker, who went to bed at 8:30!
Score On Scordo!
Scordo.com, a practical living “how-to” blog, did a feature post on KERF! Cool!

Bottomless Pit?
I definitely notice a difference in my hunger levels throughout the month and this blurb from this month’s SHAPE suggested why:
“The International Journal of Obesity found that women taken in between 90 to 500 extra calories during the two weeks before their period. ‘Our research shows that a woman’s stomach empties about 25 percent faster in the two weeks before her period than it does in the weeks immediately following it,” says Ixchel Brennan…This may be due to a rise in the levels of the hormone progesterone right after ovulation.'”
G’night guys!
Sarah (lovINmytummy) says
Yoga in empty classrooms?! Now THAT is productive. I won’t tell you what we used to do in empty classrooms in law school 😉
You ate potato chips for dinner in front of the tube…I’m proud!
Sarah (Sarah's Eats and Exercises) says
What an interesting excerpt from Shape. Have a good night
junghwa says
mmm i would love to try those pop chips!
Sarah (Tales of Expansion) says
wow, v. interesting blurb from shape! thanks for sharing.
love your snacky dinner plate!
Marissa says
Love the veggies! Interesting about the hunger. Sometimes I really do feel like a bottomless pit 🙂
Ashley says
Is that a Garth Brooks reference I see? 😛
Those pop chips look pretty good, but I’m not a huge fan of chips in general.
Molly says
Sorry about the youbar, but larabars are tasty too! Haha, I hope that isn’t a peanut butter cookie one!
Jasmine (Sweet and Fit) says
I have never heard of pop chips – I love the nutritional info about them! Id love to try em’… thats a really interesting point about women’s stomach’s emptying more the two weeks before her period – I never thought about it that way
Mara @ What's For Dinner? says
Interesting blurb from Shape…they tend to have reliable stuff!
I wasn’t thrilled with PopChips when I tried them, but then again, I don’t like most things with that poofy texture.
Sharon says
So cool with pop chips!
Lisa says
That’s fascinating! I wonder if that’s partly why you get so hungry when you’re pregnant – the progesterone goes through the roof.
Katelyn says
Very interesting about eating more before your period, though I am not surprised at all!
Your camera takes just the most amazing pictures! Ours is starting to act odd – not focusing, or the flash goes off when I turned it off. Any camera peopel out there with suggestions?
jennifer says
I knew that was why I am a bottomless pit right before that time of the month! I am also only much more tired.
Casey says
I’m going to pick up some of those chips next time I’m at Whole Foods! Your dinner looked soo good! Especially those veggies!
Amanda says
Sorry to hear about your test results. This honestly has to be one of the only times I can remember you reporting back disappointed about a test score, so don’t let it get to you! You will be the best RD around regardless!!
🙂
Jenn (eating bender) says
I’m just catching up on your day – congrats to the hub on his new blog! Or should I say, Matt 🙂
The first time I heard of popchips was when I watched that video! I love the Whatever Hollywood girls. One time I saw one of them walking down the street in Chicago (she was visiting) and I felt star struck, lol!
That same thing happened to me with YouBars. So disappointing.
Sorry to hear about your test 🙁 But like Amanda said, this is definitely one of the only times I remember you being disappointed – and you’re still my favorite RD in training!
Maggie says
Wow, interesting fact. I wonder how it applies to women on birth control?
I love that you did yoga before class 🙂
Melissa says
Oooo, loved how you turned navy beans into instant baked beans!! Looks delish!
FoodsThatFit says
Pop chips! I still haven’t tried them, but am seeing them everywhere! Way to make use of your time with yoga in the classroom! I am impressed!
Janet says
That video is hilarious! Cute. I like Pop Chips – I find they are good when I want some kind of “crunch” on the side of a sandwich (sometimes a girl needs some crunch!), but they aren’t really satisfying. Whole Foods has an organic version of these, too – they’re a little less puffy, but they have a cinnamon flavor which totally reminds me of those cinnamon crisp chip things I used to get at Taco Bell when I was a kid. Man, that was a loooong time ago 🙂
seelee live (for the love of peanut butter) says
My RD always suggests eating 200 extra calories a day 5 days before my period. Guess she was right!
i love that popchips video. looks like a lot of fun to record!!
i tried s&p too, i hear BBQ is best though!
Emily says
So fun that you did yoga at school! I should try to talk my classmates into that sometime. 🙂
KatieTX says
I totally agree with Shape. I also read you burn an extra 500 calories due to all the extra work your body does to menstruate(sorry ew gross word). I get that bottomless pit feeling! Then magically 2 weeks later my jeans fit loose again!
Also, I want to try pop chips so bad, but they are like 3 dollars per little bag. I love chips likes that though. One day I will splurge and give them a try.
amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) says
That PopChips video was hilarious! LOL!
Kailey (SnackFace) says
that bottomless pit bit is amazing! I had no clue! I looove the taste plate for dinner- eating that way is so fun to me! Have a great night, kath!
Hallie says
I KNEW there was a reason I am always hungry during that period of time (heehee…period). 90 to 500 though, that’s quite a range. Very interesting…thanks for sharing!
Anne P says
hahahha i am obsessed with that whateverhollywood girls video! hilarious!
Marianne says
I just tried some popchips today too, but I had the original ones. I think they need a flavour, but alas, I will never know, since they don’t sell them here (that I’ve seen anyways).
Cates says
That’s interesting news (from Shape). So, is it OK to eat those extra calories? Do we actually burn the extra calories, or does your stomach just empty faster, thus making you feel hungrier even if you don’t need the energy?
smilesara says
ditto on the above question: are those extra calories your boyd needs? or just extra?
seelee live (for the love of peanut butter) says
I think they are calories you need because you are burning them quicker. Your metabolism speeds up during that period of time. Therefore, you need the extra kcals.
zestycook says
Pop Chips… very interesting. Not sure they are in Canada. I will look for them

Beadie @ What I Ate Yesterday says
Intersting article.
And yay for baked beans, I need to put those on my to make list!
Bridget says
Wow that Shape blurb is exactly how I have been feeling lately too!! I feel like I can’t stop snacking…and it’s annoying 🙁 I hate when I fall into these ruts. Hopefully its just those 2 weeks.
I want that dessert bread!!!!!!!!!!!
VeggieGirl says
Lovin’ the broccoli close-up and that White Chocolate Cherry Swirl!!
Anon says
I need polar heart rate monitor help!!! I just got one for my birthday and have tried three times to work out with it only to find it slipping off my sweaty skin and if I stick it under my sports bra to hold it in place my heart rate will go to 0 and then eventually start over again. So I have not been getting accurate workout info and am frustrated. Anyone else have these issues? Kath I know you use one too….. How do you keep that sucker in place around your chest? Thanks for any help!!!!
Meaghen says
That white chocolate cherry swirl looks amazing Kath! Is there a recipe for it?
Shelby says
I keep seeing these popchips around but I’m not going to buy a huge bag of them since I’m not a big fan of chips. When I see a snack bag, I’ll try them out.
Fun snack plate!
Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) says
Whata a day you had!
Umm, definitely believe what that last article has to say!! It’s terrible!
thepinkpeppercorn says
Beautiful photos!! Good work, using the window sill of lunch, and the broccoli pic is stellar! And yay House Hunters!!
SmA033 says
omg thank you!!!!!! FINALLY some justification for the fact that i am RAVENOUS a few days/wks before my time of the month! i thought it was just me! 🙂
Brittany says
Thanks for the blurb from Shape. I definitely have an increased appetite before my period.
Ronda says
I am not fond of Popchips myself. I did not like either the texture nor the flavor. I would rather eat plain popcorn.
rebecca says
i notice the hunger changes too. like i question why i am eating more and/or why the normal amount doesn’t seem to cut it… and then *surprise* like 4 days later i have my period, and i think, ‘well ok then.’
hk says
Yoga Sesh at school- good find!! Hahaha the PopChips video is nuts, who knew??!
Looks like a yummy snack platter, too 🙂
cookienurse says
That was a great tribute to you on Scordo.com, congratulations….as I mentioned to Matt on his blog, the two of you should have a TV show together!! It would be fabulous!!
The Fat Dietitian says
I loove House Hunters, and your dinner looks yummy (hummus makes everything better)!
Diana says
I’m dying to try pop chips but I can’t seem to find them in Canada! Zesty – if you find them let me know! Your dinner looks great! Thanks for the blurb from shape – makes total sense!
Sarah says
Don’t you just love sabra? I’m addicted.
Love that you did yoga before class ; )
Sarah
skinnyrunner says
i wanted to try a youbar but maybe not anymore…
Allison K says
So..does that fact from shape apply if you are on hormone based birth control? It would be interesting to read a study on how the different types of hormone based birth control affect that.
Danielle says
Yoga in your classroom? What a good use of free time! Sounds like fun.
My boyfriend and I were just talking about missing thunder and lightning storms, luck you guys for getting one, reminds me of summer!
theoddbod says
those things look like rice cakes (almost), did you dip them in hummous as well?
brandi says
i have never heard of pop chips!
they look interesting.
Kath says
Cates ,
I believe that I have heard in both Clinical Nutr. and general worldly readings that there is a spike in metabolism during the second half of the cycle, but I am not 100% sure.
Anon ,
Sounds like you might need a smaller size. I had to buy a size small because mine came with a medium that was too big. I also find that wearing a tank top with a built in bra along with a sports bra helps keep it nice and snug.
Meaghen ,
It’s a Great Harvest bread, so unfortunately he can’t share the recipe.
Allison K,
I would think that the synthetic progesterones would have a similar effect – increasing appetite AND metabolism, but I am not sure.
theoddbod ,
No, I just ate ’em, but they sure could be dipped.
Kath
Meg says
Your beans look fantastic! Great idea!
Those pop chips look pretty good!
Jess says
That’s an interesting fact from Shape.
But ewww…pork rinds!
Bec says
Love that you did yoga in an empty classroom, such a good idea. My hunger levels definitely change throughout the month.
Amanda Cowan says
Most of the stores here in Silicon Valley are carrying Pop Chips, but I’ve seen them cheapest at Whole Foods (who often carries them at 2 for $4. I really like the bbq ones! I don’t care for the regular. I thought I would like the salt and pepper ones but maybe I wouldn’t… Try the bbq ones though, I really liked the flavor. Granted, the texture is a bit pork-rind-ish, but they would definitely get me through a mad potato chip craving!
Natalie says
I LOVE POP CHIPS- the texture is great! Pop Chips have provided samples at 2 of the races I participated in recently. I haven’t been about to find them where I live though… Boo! Seattle
katecooks says
i totally agree with the flavor on those…the original is not so hot either! i think the bbq ones are worth buying again, i get those a lot. ive been DYING to try the sea salt vinegar ones but cant find them anywhere near me!!!
Sally says
Allison K – I think that the Shape statistic doesn’t apply if you are on hormonal birth control because you hormones aren’t fluctuating in the same way/at all, depending on the type of birth control in question.
