Today felt so productive from both a work and play viewpoint!
As you probably saw, we spent all morning cleaning + organizing the bakery. My cereal powered me through! We had to get the whole lobby clear so they can put in our countertops and floor this coming week. Despite a full day of cleaning, the bakery is still SO dirty!!
Just before 1pm, Allie arrived!
She’s apartment hunting with her mom because she’s going to be working for us!!
Allie brought me Alliebars!!! Wheeeeeeee! Matt and I shared one for an appetizer to lunch!
We ventured across the parking lot to Cville Coffee, which is truly one of the best lunch spots in Cville! McIntire Plaza is going to rock the lunch crowd soon!
Cville Coffee has such a great salad
It’s covered in beans + olives + veggies and you can add a slab of the most amazing marinated tofu imaginable!
Thanks so much to Allie’s mom for treating us to lunch!!
After touring an apartment with Allie (since I am the ultimate house hunter!!) I went back to work for a bit and then we called it quits around 4PM.
We headed over to our friend’s house – Seamane and Rob, who are beer connoisseurs and homebrewers! They had a delicious brew bubbling away –
These guys really know where to find the good beers – they were 5 for 5 on the tasting front this afternoon! Everything I tasted was incredible!!
Gouden Carolus Blonde Ale – YUM!
My favorite was the Grande Cru by Great Divide Brewing Company! A beer you can CHEW!
We also tried a smoked beer – loved this one because I love all things smoked!
And finally – this Gouden Carolus Easter special beer – that had such strong notes of anise it was like licorice meets mint! Loved how unique this was –
I snacked on a few handfuls of pretzel chips – was hungry after all that dust moving! And see that Cadbury Crème Egg? I didn’t get anything from the Easter Bunny this year 🙁 Seamane let me snag one of her eggs – excited to enjoy it for dessert someday this week!
Seamane and Avery gave us a nice show –
Twirls
And some downdog yooooga!
We said farewell to our friends in the evening and headed home for a quick shower and change of clothes and went back out – on bikes again – to Jess + Mike’s place for a cookout!
Sizzlin’
Jess made beef burgers and also Emily’s Black Bean Burgers! Such a great recipe!
While they cooked, we nibbled on a spread of snacks
Including this great version of spinach dip made with greek yogurt (don’t have the recipe – sorry – but perhaps Jess will share in the comments?!)
Dinner was burgers, salad, and Jess’s awesome baked french fries, which she said we had to eat on our salads “Pittsburg style”
Great recommendation – fries are like hearty croutons!
After a few glasses of water, I had a half glass of Matt’s German beer
For dessert, Jess made Jessica’s Better-Than-Crack Brownies!
These were unlike any brownie I’d had before – the top layer was INcredible!! Like fudge meets rice crispie treat meets ganache!!
We enjoyed them over some Breyer’s ice cream – slightly melted just how I like it!
So good I couldn’t keep my paws off of the brownies – went back for a half a second!
The bike ride home was dark and scary. I don’t think I want to do that one again. I almost biked right into a ditch, which would have been terrifying since I couldn’t see a thing. Glad to be home safe and sound now.
Off to bed!

i have a creme egg every year but this one i ate it too early – like the day i saw it at the drugstore!
Khushboo says
Believe it or not, even after 8 years in London Ive never tried a cream egg! Despite only hearing rave reviews, the cream filling doesn’t do anything for me! Let me know what you think.
Danielle @ weightsandmeasures says
Those brownies do look quite enticing! I went to a Royal Wedding tea last night where a friend served the biscuit bake William had at the reception. It was hard to stick to just one piece. It was incredible!
KathEats says
I would LOVE to try that cake!!

I love that you guys bike when you can! Sorry about the scary ride home- I’ve had those before! 🙁 You need to get a bike light for each of your handlebars! Even a small one can help you see a lot better. 🙂
Canadian says
Yes, get yourselves some bike lights!
KathEats says
We do have lights!!! They just weren’t bright enough. It was REALLY dark!
melissa says
Our fridge is completely bare because we leave for a trip to Hawaii on Monday and seeing all of you pictures is making me HUNGRY!

what a hugely productive day, kath! you must feel a great sense of satisfaction with the progress being made at the bakery. more dust = more accomplished!
just wanted to let you know that you’ve inspired me to dust off my bike – i live in the heart of my city, so i am eager to try biking short distances to do errands when it’s too far to walk – thanks for the positive role modelling!
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
Looks like you had such a fun time with your friends..and worked hard at the bakery. So fun that your friends brew their own beer. An old friend and I bought a kit once at like Bed, Bath, and Beyond – but it was gross. It would be cool to REALLY know what your are doing though!
Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says
Ive drooled over that recipe of Jessica’s so many times but have never made them. you have just convinced me w/ your amazing description of them!

McKayla (green groats) says
Both of your salads looks delicious!!
Yes, biking in the dark is scary – especially without a light!
Jess says
See! I’m not crazy….biking around our house at night is terrifying!
Spinach dip recipe (embarrassingly easy):
2 6oz containers of 0% greek yogurt
Frozen chopped spinach thawed and ALL the water rung out
1/2 cup of chopped water chestnuts
1 packet of ranch dressing mix
Mix and chill before serving 🙂

Is that cheddar cheese in the salad? Everything looks so great.
Isn’t Allie another blogger?!? That’s incredible – does she live close to your area or move just for the job? Has she worked in bakeries before? Neat!
AnneWF says
What a busy, productive and satisfying Saturday you two had. Good for you. It’s great that you bike so much to get around. Have you considered getting lights for your bikes? We did this after we found ourselves biking into the evening hours. At first it was more for the other drivers, so they could see us, but then as we did more in the dark it was good for us to see where we were going. Just a thought. Have a great Sunday.
KathEats says
We do have them – they are just not that great in the front

the smoky beer you mentioned and had a picture of is the bomb. it is popping up all over food blogs too! i love it because I studied abroad in Bamberg, Germany, the town in Bavaria where the beer is brewed. talk about fun, sitting around drinking Schrenkrla and trying desperately to speak German. Lots of good memories. Hope you are having a great weekend.
Lauren @ MRS says
It looks like it’s coming along quite well, I can’t wait till you guys finally open it! And those brownies looks so scrumptious, fortunately I can compensate my cravings with a great batch of chocolate silvanas from yesterday.
