Two stellar cards I have received this week!
This one was hand-painted by my grandmother. Love the classics!
And KERF reader Molly found this one and knew it was meant for me. Love that number.
We are deep into the dreary days of January and I’m wondering where the sun has gone. I think I need one of those sunshine lamps. I’m trying to embrace the coziness as much as I can, but sometimes I just want to cry when I think about crickets chirping, warm breezes and evening strolls at dusk.
Burgers in particular remind me of summertime, so I had one for lunch. A No Bull Burger! They now sell these [frozen] at my Whole Foods so it was easy to grab and go. Unfortunately they were more expensive than buying them at the farmer’s market (darn mark-up) so that’s another thing I can’t wait for warm weather for.
I stuffed a burger into a slice of High Five, sandwich style with K+M and a leaf
Side items included a Cara-Cara orange (this flavor is responsible for the bright orange hue)
And a pile of kettle chips found in the pantry
I’m trying to fake summertime. I can almost do it if I close my eyes and think about cold beer and grilled veggies!
Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn says
Your grandma is so precious. And talented. Receiving cards & letters make my day, especially when they’re from family.
Kinley @ Better Off Barefoot says
It’s snow storming here and I want it to Summertime here instead too! Thinking warm thoughts for all of us!!!
Emily says
my sister got one of those sunshine “happy” lamps…and right away she noticed a difference! she took it with her to work for those dreary days in the office…which is almost every day when its wintertime…and i really think it helps! ah and i still love those oranges.
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
Great cards!!
Maria @ Sinfully Nutritious says
You are making me sad…I miss summer so much. I feel like a hibernating animal. It was cold this week, but it is supposed to be 60 next week. I am ready to get busy in the garden, too bad I have a few more months to go.
Your burger looked awesome, and I adore Kettle chips.
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
Hang in there getting through the dark, cold, winter days. Ugh. Not something I am cut out for; thus cannot live in cold weather places ever again. The cold weather and winter negatively impacts me so much and I know that so I need to live where it’s warmer and sunnier. And I hope you get some warmer and sunnier weather soon!
Your grandma is quite the talented artist…wow!
Rachel says
You solved a mystery for me! I was in Charlottesville last weekend and had one of these burgers at the Nook. One of the best veggie burgers I’ve ever had, and now I know what it was thanks to your photos. Wish I could get them in Baltimore!
KathEats says
Oh fun! I’m glad they’re showing up in restaurants!
How did you like the Nook? We haven’t been yet
Rachel says
It was a great retro diner, good lunch spot, seemed really clean (often I think diners have a layer of greasy film and dust over everything, but not there), servers were extremely friendly, and food was fresh and tasty. I think I liked my veg burger more than my boyfriend liked his beef burger. Love it when that happens! 😉
Lindzjane115 says
The Nook is great for breakfast/brunch–they have a great menu of both basics and a few more “creative” items. It’s best in the summer (as are most things, right?) when you can sit outside on the mall.
No Bull Burgers are now available at Bodo’s, too!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I would so love for it to be summertime too!! However, your mention of Whole Foods has slightly brightened my day as that is where I’m off to tomorrow! 🙂
Hillary says
Ok, as an English teacher, might I just say that your grandmother needs to send me a Will Shakespeare card for my classroom?! My kids would love it!
KathEats says
Actually this is a reproduction that her church makes from the original. So I know the cards exist for sale, but I’m not sure how to get them!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
i’m liking your tactics to make it feel more like summer… i think i’ll have to try these out! 😉
Mindy Lord @ clueless nut says
I bet the card drawn by your grandmother made your day! I know it would make mine. Placed in a frame and hung in a office or home library would be very original!
The lunch looks delicious… hawaiian pizza with jalapeños on homemade whole-wheat crust is what’s for lunch over this way.
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
Love the cards! So cool 🙂
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
You did a pretty good job conjuring up summer with that meal. Chips + burgers scream summer cook out 🙂
Khushboo says
Receiving hard mail is always such a pleasant surprise!
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
Cute cards. Being from San Antonio, I’m wondering where that sign is.
I also love your summer lunch!! Yummy!
Christine says
I use this one and it helps tremendously! http://www.amazon.com/NatureBright-SunTouch-Plus-Light-Therapy/dp/B000W8Y7FY
Jodi says
I need one of those sun lamps – trying to shake jet lag is hard when it’s dark and dreary out. I’m going to have to look for those burgers – they look great!
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
i’m trying to fake summertime too, but it’s hard with the snow falling, and quickly accumulating, outside!
classic potato chips are just the best, are they not?!
Life's a Bowl says
Wow, that orange is a beautiful shade of orange!!! I’ll wish for summer too, maybe if we get enough people to join us, it’ll happen ;P
Lindsay @ Running the Windy City says
I definitely agree with you about the dreary winter. After having such a mild fall, I was really really hoping that we would skip right over winter and start spring early. Unfortunately, no such luck 😉
greenbean says
Use your recent vacay as a source of comfort. You just got back from Jamaica!!!
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
Your grandmother’s painting if worthy of a frame…does she have the original framed? I have never heard of Cara Cara oranges…where do they originate from? I love how you cut it up! We have a very cold minus 10 today with lots of snow that fell yesterday…luckily the sun is shining for added sparkle. Do you find taking Vitamin D in the winter helps combate those winter blues? I started last winter and find it has made a difference…either that or it is having a placebo effect! lol
KathEats says
I’m sure she has it somewhere framed – she has so much beautiful art.
Not sure on the oranges or the vitamin D since I just take a multi
Janet says
You have been eating almost an orange a day. I know you wish for summer, but you can’t buy oranges in the summer unless they have grown of the USA. Be grateful for the foods of the winter if when it is cold because some of them can’t be had in the summer.
KathEats says
True, true!
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
I was so ready for winter and the holidays that summer just rushed by. I think it would be different if it were constantly cold here but the weather has been so up and down. Today it’s 70* but last night’s low was 29*. I think it’s been abnormally warm here in NC this year. I was ready for snow but now I just wish the weather would make up its mind!
Lunch looks delicious as always. I’m headed over to check out those burgers now! 🙂
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I’m loving the winter right now! It’s snowing like crazy today in Chicago! It’s so beautiful!
deva at deva by definition says
I have never seen that variety of orange before- it looks brilliant! Lately I’ve been loving the clementines -the cuties! They’re so easy to grab as a snack.
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
I’ve had enough winter too. Your lunch looks very summery. 🙂 That burger looks mouthwatering! Yum
Kelly @ Vegolosophy says
That is a beautiful orange! Looks so juicy!
Sydney@ Nutrition with Sydney says
Any idea if the “No-Bull” burgers are going to be showing up in stores in other states any time soon? 🙂
KathEats says
I doubt it since the company is small, but maybe!?
Jess says
I have an app on my phone called the Happy Apps, which includes a light therapy option. I set it for 30 minutes and set it near me while I’m working. It’s awesome!
KathEats says
Oh fun – looking this up!
Amanda says
I so know what you mean about missing summer. We got a few inches of snow in Boston last night, and while it’s really pretty (before it gets all slushy), I’m tired of having to put on two pairs of socks, boots, a scarf, hat, and so on, just to go outside.
The color of that orange is gorgeous, by the way. I’ve also been loving citrus recently.
Robyn says
I couldn’t agree more with the January blues…I cannot wait for it to warm up for my first summer in Charlottesville!!
Have a fabulous weekend 🙂
Angela @ Happy Fit Mama says
The sun is shining here but it’s windy and cold. I’m wishing for warm breezes and open windows right now.
Btw, your grandmother is very talented!
Molly @ RDexposed says
Count your lucky Southern stars that you’re not covered under snow like Notherners are. I just got my work out for the day after cleaning my car of snow.
And go ahead and have that cold beer anyways!
Christine @ Oatmeal in my Bowl says
*face plant* I need a Whole Foods by me. Kudos for them growing their biz. Love the cards!
Karen says
Ha…try faking summertime in this Chicagoland snow storm that began this morning w/no end in sight. That said, I just came back from a slippery two hour hike and thoroughly enjoyed the workout and the peaceful fall of the flakes. But, yes…summer weather would be my preference 🙂
I’m going to look for those burgers at my WF, though i suspect yours carries them b/c they are considered a local vendor and thus attractive to stores in your area. WF is good about supporting local, independent start-ups.
I’ve long-admired your grandma’s artwork; I’ve been coveting one of her chairs for a long time!
Whee for Friday!
Hannah @ Eat, Drink and Save Money says
I am happy with the weather we have. I went for a walk today and was sweating since it is 76 here. When summer comes it will be too hot to enjoy the outdoors unless at the beach. I hate the cold, so I would be wishing for warmer weather too!
Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning says
Very impressive your grandmother is! 🙂
Man, I wish my Whole Foods carried those burgers! I might have to drive down to Cville just to get some. Well, there are also about 100 other wonderful culinary things in that city…
Spring will be here soon enough, right? And then SUMMER!!!!
Sarah says
cara-cara orange? enlighten me?!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
CUTE cards!
I know, I just try and close my eyes amidst the freezing temps…Nope, not working. heh
Cara says
My name is Cara and I love when I can find “my” oranges at the store. They’re so good…must be their name:) funny that they come up as “cara navel” on my receipt.
Kris says
I’m sending sunshine and warm air your way, and to all your readers suffering the winter blues. Our tradeoff in Florida is really suffering with stifling heat when you’re experiencing a beautiful fall which I miss so much.
Gloria says
Did ya make it to BP?
Heather H @ Run Eat Play says
That orange looks delicious – so bright and sunny!
Kristi says
Wish I could find burgers like that near me. It looks really good! We don’t seem to have such access to more natural foods here, or that I know of anyway…
Erin says
That orange! Such a beautiful color. I live in Florida, so I know a good one when I see it. ;-]
Em (WIne and Butter) says
My friend suffers with really bad SAD (ha) and she said getting lightlamp, or whatever they’re called, changed her life. I’m currently budgeting it into next months paycheck! 🙂
ps – that burger looks amazing – is that tempeh? nuts? BOTH??
KathEats says
Lentils + veg!
Kelly says
Funny, kettle chips “found” in the panty! Chips are my total downfall and I WOULD KNOW they are in there waiting for me to eat them …. 🙂 If I want to be good, I cannot have them in the house.
Mary says
Ditto, Kelly. You wrote my exact thought 🙂 Can’t buy them either and eat the whole bag in one day if I do.
Ellie@Fit for the Soul says
oh wow that orange looks aaamaazing! And I’m excited to give the no bull burger a try~
Cait's Plate says
I hear ya – I am SO ready for a little sunshine. Hopefully it’s around the corner.
Also I also think of you every single time I see “26” 🙂
KathEats says
🙂
daphna says
Kath, just saw that you’re going to be in San Diego soon. What dates are you gonna be here? Take care!
KathEats says
End of February for Great Harvest Convention. Not sure of my free time, but I can’t wait for the nice weather!
Cara says
I love CaraCara oranges! Mostly because of the name but they are so flavorful 🙂
Angel7 says
Your grandma is so talented!
That Cara-Cara orange looks awesomely delish!
I have to say that I love the winter and the snow it brings! However, because we live in a state where it is cold and dreary for many months on end, the winter gets old after three or four months, not to mention the lack of sunshine we get during those months.

Kerry says
Summer will be here before we know it! And spring is pretty great too
Rachel S. Gerber says
Hi Kath! Just wanted to let you know that C’ville Market has No-Bull Burgers as well. I’m not sure how much they are compared to Whole Foods, but I’ve found C’ville Market prices to be overall much more competitive. Being gluten-free, I wish they didn’t have barley in them, maybe they can come up with a GF burger–that would be fabulous!
KathEats says
Hey Rachel! How are you!?
Thanks for the head’s up – I go to Cville Market about once a month and will have to price compare!
~Christy says
Hope it worked for you — trying to do the same!!!
