Or rather, the lack of alarming was quite alarming!!
Mine didn’t go off!
When I set it, it said: “Your alarm is set for 7 hours and 45 minutes from now” but then it didn’t go off!! Could this have to do with the black color of the time? Can someone please educate me!
Luckily I woke up naturally at 6 anyways and was able to get here by 6:30 – flying on my bike of a broomstick.
The muffins forgave me!
Of course I came prepared!
Overnight oats in a jar. My current favorite breakfast.
- 1/3 cup Great Harvest oatmeal mix
- 1/2 cup yogurt
- 1/2 cup milk
- Cinnamon
- Pinch salt
- 1 small banana
–> stir, set overnight in the fridge
I added a few Cville Clusters and a few nougets of Savannah bar [whole grain, made with fruit, but not exactly a “lite” food
]Plus coffee – 25% caf, 75% decaf. Great perk of working at the bakery: decaf is made for me, caf for Matt!
Brain on grain!
Lauren says
that is my current favourite way for oats right now! minus the ‘naner! SInce summers rollin’ in I’ve been putting in a bazillion fresh berries in it overnight…hmm like amazing! I like the mason jar idea too! I will have to try it… i have so many. 🙂
Kate says
Congrats on your bakery, Kath! As for your alarm, it looks like your alarm wasn’t checked (with a green check). But, I’m surprised it gave you the message that it was set for 7 hrs 45 min etc when the box wasn’t checked. Hope it doesn’t happen again!
KathEats says
Oh it was when I set it – I must have unchecked it when playing with it before the photo. But I assure you it was checked last night!!
Christie {Nourishing Circle} says
I was going to say looks like it needed to be “checked”.
Amanda says
My droid’s alarm is really quiet. Are you sure the alarm sound was on?
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
Missing my alarm is one of my biggest nightmare-inducing fears. I used to sleep through it in high school and college. It would be blaring and I didn’t even hear it! Lately I’ve been using the Sleep Cycle app that can tell what REM state you’re in and wake you when you’re coming out of it so t’s easier to get out of bed. It’s done wonders for my wake up times!
KathEats says
That sounds cool!
Monika @ Powered by Paprika says
I absolutely hate when I sleep through my alarms or they don’t go off- and it usually conveniently happens on days when you absolutely NEED to wake up for something in particular!
happy saturday 🙂
Heather says
I hate missing an alarm – always sets me off on the wrong foot!
Good luck at the bakery today – that breakfast looks amazing!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Yikes, I hate when my alarm decides not to go off! I’m glad your morning worked out after all! Have a great day Kath!
Hannah says
Forgiving muffins are the best kind! Maybe your phone just thought you should get some extra sleep 🙂
KathEats says
Haha – indeed
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
I really need a Savannah bar in my life!
And I love how you can customize your coffee order, caf vs. no-caf. I can drink about 3 cups of coffee and to to sleep so I am a 100% caf girl!
So sorry about your alarm. That gets the day started off on a really anxious, scramble-fest kind of chaotic mo-jo. Hope things are smooth from here on out for you!
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
Yikes! Gotta love the natural wake-up calls though… glad you were still able to make it in on time. That bar looks SO good. Hope the day goes well, especially after that surprise alarm mishap! 😉
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
I hate it when my alarm doesn’t go off. I don’t have your type of phone, so I am not sure what the prob is.
Mine.. however. is usually because I set it for PM instead of AM.. or forget to switchthe setting to on! Silly me.
Danielle @ weightsandmeasures says
I usually set more than one alarm on my phone to be cautious. I’ll set them about 15 minutes apart. I definitely have terrible memories of racing across my college campus years ago to turn in a paper that I stayed up late to finish. Only to be late to class and get discounted points.
Those choco chip muffins are just asking to be eaten.
Abby says
Aww! I hate those mornings! I need Cville Cluster in my life! Lol.
Molly @ RDexposed says
I just passed on the basic overnight oats recipes to a fellow dietitian! She made them last night, the verdict is still out though.
Cait's Plate says
Ugh that’s the WORST feeling! I hate waking up and realizing my alarm didn’t go off – that happens on my phone too where it will say it’s set and then never go off! I always assumed I just wasn’t hearing it but now I’m thinking maybe not!
Those chocolate chip muffins look AMAZING – I would’ve raced on my bike to get over to the bakery if they were waiting for me as well 😉
Khushboo says
Like you I naturally wake up in the morning at the same time but it’s mentally reassuring to know the alarm is set! I would love to crumble some of that muffin on my overnight oats (or any other GH goodies which are up for grabs)
Sarah says
Loving OIAJ! I start my dietetic internship in July and am trying to figure out a fast, easy breakfast to take with me on the subway… you KNOW those foodservice rotations are early early early!
KathEats says
oh yeah……good luck!
Simply Life says
good thing you still woke-up in time!
Melissa says
It is black because of the time of the day the alarm is set. Anytime set between 6 pm and 5:59 am will be black.
I’m not exactly sure why your alarm didn’t go off, but you might want to check your alarm volume. Mine got turned off somehow and it took me forever to figure out how to fix it (your ringer volume and alarm volume are different). Our phones are slightly different, but this should work for you as well: click on one of the alarms so the screen pops up where you can change the time of the alarm. Then find the volume button on the side of your phone and press the up arrow. A smaller box should pop up telling you what your alarm volume is set at.
Hope this helps 🙂
KathEats says
The volume seems to be up. Maybe I just slept through it!?
KathEats says
PS. So glad to know that about night and day – that’s what I thought, but didn’t know for sure!
Hilary says
Sorry I can’t help with the alarm issues…but I love going “alarm-less,” such a freeing feeling. 🙂
Allison says
Your Cville Clusters are soo delicious!! I wish I bought more!
Clare @ Fitting It All In says
The green check mark on the right needs to be on for the alarm to be on – although it shouldn’t have told you it was set if that wasn’t the case!!
Caitlin Zellers says
Hey, Kath I’ve been following your journey in opening Great Harvest, but I’m all the way over here in California. I scouted out Great Harvest locations and found one an hour away in Pasadena, CA. It was so fun to go in there, I know all of the behind the counter secrets from your blog, hehe. The berry bar was out of this world and I can’t wait to try the other bread loaves.
KathEats says
Glad you liked it!!
Amy says
That is my nightly fear! I do not trust these phones but yet I rely on one every morning! I also do not understand why some times are emboldened in black and some are not– can someone explain this?
Kelsey says
Hi Amy, I replied below but I figured I’d give you a direct reply in case you don’t check back 🙂
The alarms were black because it was set for “nighttime,” or a time when the phone considers it to be “dark” out (it goes from 6pm until 6am)…obviously not as accurate in the summer months, but still cool nonetheless. In the “daytime hours” (6am – 6pm) the alarm shows as light.
Emily @ Savory and Savage says
Ugh, I hate it when the alarm doesn’t go off.
Angel7 says
The Overnight Oats In A Jar look so good!!! I have not had breakfast yet, and would love to have some 🙂
It is a good thing you had your breakfast prepared the night before 🙂

Maria @ Beautiful Busy Bee says
Mm, the savannah bar looks really good! I like to cook my overnight oats but not completely the night before and then they’re really creamy in the morning. Check out my blog!
Freya (Brit Chick Runs) says
Ohh gosh, I hate it when alarms don’t go off!! I always seem to wake up at the right time anyway (I believe due to fear of oversleeping :-p) but the thought that it COULD have gone so wrong is so stressful!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I hate how stressful the day starts off when you miss the alarm! At least your body knew when to wake up anyway 🙂
Kate (What Kate is Cooking) says
I hate the feeling of waking up and realizing your alarm hasn’t gone off! Good thing you still made it in time 🙂
katie @KatieDid says
grrrr i hate when alarms don’t work and you have no idea WHY!! glad you still made it, I think when you subconsciously know you need to be up your body does a good job of waking. Fitting in blogging on top of a rushed morning, phew I don’t no how you do it!! Have a great day 🙂
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
Isn’t that the worst? I hate it when my alarm doesn’t go off… especially when you know you set it.
I miss Great Harvest! My mom use to work at one and I adored the owners! I hope y’all have a blast on this busy Saturday!
Kelsey says

Someone already addressed that you don’t have the box checked, but since you saw the little pop-up message that said it was only 7 hours away I’m not sure why it didn’t go off. My best advice would be to check the alarm volume. You can do this by hitting the menu button when you are in the screen you showed above, and then hit settings. On my phone (HTC incredible), I can check a box to make the alarm go off even when the phone is silent, change the volume and whether it vibrates. I’m not sure if it would be exactly the same for your phone.
Good luck! I’m glad your morning still worked out on time 🙂
KathEats says
Thanks!! The volume was up but I put it louder!
Robyn @ Blueberries and Oats says
Ahh it is the worst feeling to wake up and realize your alarm didn’t go off! Hope you catch up with your morning!!
Liv @ The Salty n' Sweet says
Aw I hate when my alarm doesn’t go off! But usually it’s because I set it to PM instead of AM…
Do you make your OIAJ at GH now?? That’d be super convenient 🙂
KathEats says
No, at home and then I bring them in. No yogurt here!
Laura Jane @ Recovering Chocoholic says
Oh wow, that is awful to wake up and realize your alarm didn’t go off. The alarm on my husband’s iPod touch is very finnicky and we absolutely can’t figure out why. Sometimes it goes off and sometimes it doesn’t. I hope it was just a one-time fluke with your phone alarm. I’m still scared to try overnight oats for some reason, but I really should. I love the idea of having breakfast all ready to go.
Stacey says
My HTC alarm did something weird like a that a few weeks ago. The husband and I get up at 4:40 during the week to get to the gym by 5. I set it and at 4:40 it went off, except according to every other clock in the hosue it was actually 4:30. It was so strange, overnight my phone got 10mins faster. Then that weekend it was NOT set for a super early time and it ended up going off at 4:59am, I time I have never set it for. It was so strange!
hippierunner says
Maybe your alarm knew you could use a few extra minutes of sleep? 😉
Mom says
Well I hate to sound old school, but I suggest two alarms.
Or you can take the Bears back. They had me up at the crack of dawn. They wanted to go fishing. I don’t know where that was coming from as we don’t even own rods.
KathEats says
LOL
Mary Frances says
The bears probably heard about someone suggesting their mom and dad get a “toy” fishing rod to play with el Tigre, and had fishing on the brain.
Sarah@The Flying ONION says
I love/hate when my alarm doesn’t go off. Glad you managed to wake up according to your internal alarm though! 😀
Breakfast looks fabulous! Sometimes just a little of something great makes all the difference in enjoying such a delicious breakfast. 😀
lynn @ the actor's diet says
gah! so stressful – i don’t trust my phone alarm…
Gina (Yogattude) says
Ugh, that’s the worst feeling when you wake up naturally and look at the clock and it’s past the time you had set an alarm for!
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
That happens to me too — even if my alarm doesn’t go off I tend to wake up naturally just in time!
Sandy says
Kath!
Look at the Word of the Day on Dictionary.com! Who knew it was a verb? (Maybe it refers to cutting bread??!!) 🙂
Word of the Day

kerf
\KURF\ , noun;
1.
A cut or incision made by a saw or the like in a piece of wood.
2.
In mining, a deep cut a few inches high, used to undermine a portion of a coal or mineral seam.
3.
The act of cutting or carving.
verb:
1.
To cut or carve.
KathEats says
I heard!! I’d just like to know why the REAL KERF wasn’t mentioned!!
Mary Frances says
Contact Dictionary.com
Larbs says
It might be bc the phone only checks the M-F boxes and you have to make sure the Sat and Sun boxes are checked too.
KathEats says
I think that might be what it was. It didn’t have ANY days checked.
Amalia says
I have the SAME phone and it does that to me allllll the time!!! SOOOO frustrating!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I rarely use an alarm to get up but when I set it for early morning exams or work shifts, I’m always freaked out that it won’t go off. At least you woke up pretty early on your own!
Christie says
Those muffins – oh my gosh, they look sooooo good! Great Harvest needs to come to New Zealand!
Katherina @ Zephyr Runs says
That happened to me this morning! I woke up 5 minutes until I had to be at work.. luckily I can get ready in 5 and it takes me 5 to get there, so I was just a little late 😛 Hopefully you figured out what caused the malfunction! Overnight oats are so great when you’re pressed for time <3
kris (everyday oats) says
Internal alarms are always the best 🙂
I’ve messed up too many morning alarms and now set 2 or 3 about 5 mins apart just so that I’m sure at least one of them works!
Mary Frances says
1. 7 hrs. 45 min. isn’t enough sleep per night, and I’m guessing that was one of the longer nights sleep you got this week.
2. Maybe you really did sleep through the alarm! (and needed it)
3. Don’t rely on the physical volume button on the side of the phone. For each alarm set time, scroll down through the whole set up screen. Volume is at the bottom below alarm type and tone; possibly, something got reset.
4. I noticed you didn’t fill out your descriptions. For my first one, it displays, Good Morning; the second, Rise and Shine; third, Time to Get Up; fourth, GET UP NOW; fifth, Go out the door. Most of the time I don’t have to go past the second, which is more friendly.
5. If there is something that is crucial you need to be at the bakery for early, maybe a friendly wake up call from someone else already at the bakery or due to be there early too (if you don’t check in with them first at a prescribed time).
6. Do a test alarm setting each night–maybe even one to tell you to go to upstairs to get ready for bed a good nine hours before your morning wake up time.
7. Sweet Dreams!
Angela says
My Droid did the same thing this morning. I set it last night, it told me how many hours until it went off and returned to the main screen where it told me it was set for Saturday 6:30am. I have no idea if I slept through it or if it had a hiccup. I sure got my morning off to a crazy start.
J3nn(Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
Ugh, I hate when technology malfunctions! Yay for mother natures internal clock!!
Justy2003 says
So I had this problem with my Droid multiple times and THEN I figured it out. If none of the M-F boxes were checked it should’ve gone off. Not sure if you have the Droid Task Killer app, but if you do and you kill your tasks after setting your alarm, the alarm won’t go off. I used to kill all the tasks after I was finished using my phone for the night, then realized it was shutting off the alarm, even though the box would still be checked. Maybe this will help??
Mary Frances says
Justy2003… good call.
Also, in the status bar at the very top that never goes away no matter which application you are in, i.e., talking on the phone, texting, calendar, calculator, browsing online, etc. That status line where the time is on the far right, then moving left… your battery strength, then your signal strength, then a space and the far left shows if you had missed calls, messages, email, calendar reminders, etc. — well, next to the time on the far right, if your alarm is set, there will be an icon of an old time looking alarm clock with the bells on top. If that icon is not next to the time, your alarm is not set and will not go off. Maybe if it looked like it was set, an app killer out trumped it, shut it down and took the icon away. I don’t see the icon on your status bar.
Justy2003 says
Just an FYI…if you use the app killer the alarm symbol is still in the status bar even though it won’t go off.
