Would you look at this cute little wiggle worm!?
He was my pre-Valentine’s date. I gave his mama a little break so she could get housework and errands done. And I had fun playing with Finn.
Although I have to say it would have been easier if my breasts produced milk 🙂 Little guy was hungry! We had fun in between feedings though (and when Holly left I fed him with a pumped bottle). We read stories and played with toys and made funny faces together. He even learned to stick his tongue back out at me! Lots of smiles too. I just love babies!!! Always have.
When le bebe was napping, I ate an apple and read some Hunger Games. (I read some aloud to him too but my voice gave out before Finn’s attention span for Katniss and Peeta did!)
Holly sent me home with some BISCOFF and York Patties!! I had a patty on my ride home 🙂
I raced home just in time to make it to date night. Hopefully our last childless Valentine’s Day!?
When we went to Orzo a few weeks ago for restaurant week, they gave us a golden ticket to come back any night for the 3-courses-for-$26 deal. It wasn’t valid on V-day, so we just went a night early!
Love the complimentary hummus + pitas!
Matt got a wine flight. I took a sip of each to taste them out.
Gosh I would LOVE to drink a whole bottle of wine right now – hangover and all! I miss it so much. We were talking over dinner that even though I don’t really want to get drunk, even when the baby comes I won’t be able to have more than a glass or so – unless I want to waste breast milk. And it’s also probably not very responsible to be too tipsy with a child. So our days of wild beer festivals might be over – unless a grandma volunteers to babysit!
But that is OK, really, because I’m sure that giving up that lifestyle will be 100% worth it when the time comes.
Course I was Calamari and Shrimp Beignets in a dipping sauce. These were awesome!! Like seafood hushpuppies.
Matt had the mussels, which I got last time!
The best part of doing restaurant week all over again (and Orzo is the BEST because they offer nearly their whole menu) is that we know just what dishes to order!!
Case in point, I heard raving reviews of the Hangar Steak last time. I’m not normally a big steak person, but I decided to take a risk and get it. And it was FAB!! Juicy and tender and the carrot coulis on the side was excellent.
Loved the potato gratin too – it was a good match for my cheesy potato craving.
Matt had Pork Belly + Shrimp, which was divine, but not as good as mine!
Last time Karen had the Lemon Cake so I knew I’d like it despite rarely ordering lemon desserts. Really I just wanted the whipped cream!
Matt had a [blurry] chocolate chip cookie with vanilla gelato and gave me the best bite!
When we returned home, we exchanged gifts.
A sweet cart from Matt [hand painted] that even mentioned babies!! Needless to say he knows how to make my heart flutter : )
I also got this one from my parents. Babies on the brain, huh?
Matt and I aren’t big gift givers, but we decided to do something small for Valentine’s. I got him a bike shirt from Blue Ridge Eco Shop
And a peanut butter buckeye from Feast, which I get for him whenever I go there – he loves them!
I told him all I wanted was my very own box of chocolates.
I’m sure this will make many of you angry, but I love to take one bite of all of them and then go back for a second bite and a third in rounds. It’s the best way!!
Matt got me Gearhart’s Chocolates, a famous local Cville chocolatier.
Unlike Jim Gaffigan’s Gamble Chocolates, none of these contained toothpaste! [Listen to 3:38 on! Most hilarious comedian ever.]
TWO LAYERS!!!!!! What a fun surprise!
And in true V-day fashion, we tasted one bite of a handful of them. Can’t wait to go back for that second bite later!!
Happy Chocolate Day!

I only put back the chocolates I don’t like 😉

Marla says
“Explode your ladybits”?!!
What an expression, yikes! Kinda nasty description for
a beautiful but painful experience…
Wendy Heath says
ROFL! You know, from someone who’s witnessed but not experienced childbirth… I kinda gotta say it’s apt, unfortunately… It is a beautiful experience, no doubt, but on the factual level, yep! ‘Splosion city…
Clare says
Hahahaha! Love it!
Yes, indeedy. Explosion is about right and that first glass is MAGIC.
Jodi @ Jodi, Fat or Not says
That second picture of the baby is ridiculously cute! Just makes me smile 🙂
Andrea @FrSeed2Stomach says
I miss your veggie meals and cannot wait until your palate adjusts to love them again. Also, Finn is irresistibly adorable! Enjoy those chocolates!
Mai says
I love doing that with chocolates too! I’ll just slice a bit of each piece so I can taste them all. 😀
Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
That’s so nice that the restaurant offers pita and hummus instead of a bread basket – what a good variation! I wish more restaurants did that. I’m super impressed that Matt hand-painted that card, it’s so pretty! And I LOVE buckeyes – my mom and grandma always make them at Christmas. I’ve made them once but they just weren’t as good as when someone else makes them 🙂
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
little finn is just too cute! how fun that you got to babysit him for a bit! so glad you had a great date night with matt – looks like some delicious eats. i love the way you eat your chocolates!
Kinley @ Better Off Barefoot says
That Finn is going to be a heart breaker for sure! So adorable!!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
That food all looks so delicious, especially the potato gratin! And I love the idea of taking a bit of each and coming back to them!
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
Every single picture looks amazing! I’m like you – not a huge steak fan, but that dish looks like something I wouldn’t mind sinking my teeth into! It looks like it had a wonderful crust.
Ashley @ Coffee, Cake and Cardio says
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Colleen says
This is your firsy V-day with a baby, he/she is just finishing baking! I dont drink, but I could not wait for over easy eggs…how I missed them.
Maureen says
It should be illegal for a baby to be THAT cute! Totally unfair to the “not-so-cute” babies out there!
Clare @ SweetnSimple says
Ahh that baby is SO gorgeous! Adorable little thing he is – and your food looks beautiful 🙂 Drooling at those chocolates..
kaila@ healthy helper blog! says
WHAT A LITTLE PEANUT!!!! Omg he is SO adorable!!
Lindsay @ Running the Windy City says
Your dinner looks outstanding! I love mussels 🙂
Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon says
Haha my roommate has the same chocolate eating habit!! She’ll offer them to me (and in a genuine way, not a hahaha you could have one but look what I did kind of way) but every single one will have a bite taken out already! Umm..no thank you?
Jennifer says
What a cutie!
I always followed the rule of thumb that as soon as I couldn’t feel the effects of the alcohol any more then it was OK to breastfeed. Hopefully you’ll get a good sleeper so you’ll be able to have more than a drink after bed time. Neither of mine slept through the night until 10-11 months. But you are totally right that it’s all worth it! I don’t think I would have let my husband drink wine in front of me though–thankfully for us he’s the beer drinker and I’m the wine drinker and neither of us usually order the other, so I never got jealous.
JosieT says
That was the rule I got told too, from everyone from my pediatrician and midwife to my mom lol. For me that meant if I fed the baby, had a margarita or two I could nurse within 2-4 hours depending on how strong the drinks were. Once your supply is established you do not need to pump and dump. Total myth there. If you’re lucky enough to have a baby that actually sleeps at night (or at least 5 hour stretches) there’s not much to worry about.
Plus they sell breast milk testing strips if you’re super paranoid! My congrats on the new baby gift has been a bottle of wine and a box of those since I found out the existed.
Jennifer says
I’m a pretty laid back parent, especially the 2nd time around, but I don’t think I ever drink enough that I’d feel the need to pump and dump. I just don’t drink that much. And beer is supposed to be good for your supply! 🙂
That’s a great gift, I may have to keep that in mind for baby showers.
Heidi Bundles Of Hugs says
What a great date night, you two are such a cute couple! The lil guy is cute too, I’m sure his mama enjoyed some time to get stuff done.
Jenny@vegetarianhatesvegetables says
Those brussels sprouts stole the show for me! You won’t miss the partying. You’ll wonder why you ever enjoyed it in the first place.
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
LOL, I do the same things with boxes of chocolates! Luckily, no one in my house complains. 😀
Dinner looks so delish. I like all of your selections. This time next year… WHOLE NEW WORLD! Yay!
Alaina says
What a wonderful Valentine’s Day together!! You guys will make such a beautiful baby. 🙂

Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
What a great post…ok I had no idea Matt could draw/paint…the hand-painted card is gorgeous. Wow, impressive!
And Finn…what a cutie patootie!! And I swear, little babies can “smell” the milk on a pregnant woman or the hormones or something. Soon enough you’ll be a milk machine 🙂
BethT says
I haven’t had more than a glass and a half of alcohol since having Lucy 15 months ago because I am very, very afraid of a hangover with a baby!
Meredith says
“even when the baby comes I won’t be able to have more than a glass or so – unless I want to waste breast milk.”
Oh hey! Great news on that front. Breasts aren’t just a receptacle of milk– they’re full of “alive” breastmilk and most of the milk you make will be while baby is on the breast (especially after 12 weeks). Alcohol passes out of breastmilk just like it passes out of the blood– after one hour per glass, you’re good. If baby’s out for the count for two hours, go ahead and have two glasses! Conservatively you may wish to wait longer than that. Do some googling and see for yourself.
The concept that one need “pump and dump” while drinking is a fallacy– and a good thing, too, because you don’t want to be on the pump any more than you have to be. 🙂
Congrats and keep up the great blogging.
Jenn says
I was just about to post the same thing! Although I have to say, after nearly a year of not drinking, one glass does me in for the evening! (currently nursing my 9mth old as I type this!! – Kath, you’ll prob get really good at 1-handed typing!)
Amy says
I was going to post the same thing too!
No need to pump and dump
From Kellymom.com
In general, if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed. Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk. Alcohol peaks in mom’s blood and milk approximately 1/2-1 hour after drinking (but there is considerable variation from person to person, depending upon how much food was eaten in the same time period, mom’s body weight and percentage of body fat, etc.). Alcohol does not accumulate in breastmilk, but leaves the milk as it leaves the blood; so when your blood alcohol levels are back down, so are your milk alcohol levels.
KathEats says
This is great news!!! Thanks for the info guys

I’ve never thought of eating chocolates in that fashion as a way to enjoy them round after round. I quite like that idea. I usually eat the ones I don’t like first–or give them away–and then enjoy my favourites one by one.
And Finn is one ridiculously cute baby! All this baby talk on various blogs has got my brain in baby mode but the fiance and I aren’t quite there yet. Someday, maybe.
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Well that little guy is just ADORABLE! I’m sure he’s super fun to babysit! 🙂

Kath, I lovelovelove your blog. You seriously have thee best outlook on being healthy and eating various foods (that look mighty good ;)). You are literally my role model for healthy, intuitive, and balanced eating!
KathEats says
Thanks so much Cara!
Emily says
Oh, I’ve always eaten chocolates that way. What if you accidentally saved the worst for last?! It’d be tragic.
Man, what an adorable baby!! I am so looking forward to meeting BERF – he or she is going to have some majorly good genes 🙂
KathEats says
You know when a family shares a box and you go in the pantry to shake it and it’s hollow – there is only one left and it’s probably a toothpaste-filled chocolate with a bite out of it!
Sydney@ Nutrition with Sydney says
Love the fancy box of chocolates!
Kiran @ KiranTarun.com says
Finn is absolutely gorgeous — my heart flutters looking at that cute little face 😀
Angela says
You are a girl after my own heart! I totally eat boxed chocolates the same way! My husband doesn’t understand that I just want a little taste and then there is more to savor later so he just buys me a separate box for myself so guests or him do not inadvertently come across half eaten chocolate.
Holly says
I love all the nice comments when you post pictures of my son. Reading them makes this 3am feeding seem a little easier 🙂
KathEats says
Your son takes after his mom!
elocin says
What a sweet baby boy. Very good start to your V-Day =)

Darling baby, lovely cards, and gorgeous chocolates. How about a box for the mother-in-law? Maybe not, because Matt wouldn’t believe I could stand to eat them in three bites (instead of one.)
KathEats says
Hahahha!
Laura Jane @ Recovering Chocoholic says
Oh wow, what a sweet baby! Sounds like a great early Valentine. I like to eat chocolates in the same way. I also like to have tiny bites so I can really savor them.

Cutest baby ever.
And I eat chocolates the same way. My boyfriend hates it, but old habits die hard!

What a gorgeous meal out…the pita and hummus, the mussels your lemon cake! Yummy! My hubbie and I have plans to go out tonight…we rarely go out! Unfortunately, I am under the weather and hope I will make it! Rotten when the taste buds are knocked out!
Erin says
They are your own box of chocolates, you are allowed to eat them any way you want!
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
That’s an interesting way to deal with a box of chocolates. I try NOT to have one of those in the house.
Amelia says
Mmmm…calamari and shrimp beignets! Those sound incredible.
You two are so cute and romantic together. Love the chocolates! They remind me of Jacques Torres from NYC.
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
I hate to say this but it is comforting knowing even good bloggers don’t eat veggies and don’t run much when they are pregnant. I felt like the worst mom ever when I couldn’t stomache veggies and warmly had enough energy for a walk. Dinner looks amazing!
Emily says
I was trying to google your baby page to see if you made it yet and came across this page. I thought it was pretty disgusting that people talk about bloggers like this on a public forum. I just wanted to make you aware if it if you are not already!
Karen says
Aren’t there some legal remedies for you, Kath? The comments sure seem defamatory in nature…
KathEats says
not worth my time pursuing
Jen says
Call me naive, but I had no idea such a place even existed. Why do people have to be so hateful? Does it make them feel better about themselves or something? I seriously don’t get it.

Awww! That baby is super cute! 🙂 Looks like a great Valentine’s Day date!! I love getting a box of chocolates like that! I always take a bite out of ones that I think look good and pray that it’s one that I like. It’s fun that way.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who eats my chocolates like this! Everyone thinks I’m nuts. But it is the only way to go, I 100% agree.
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I totally love doing that too-best WAY to eat chocolate in my opinion!
occula says
That’s hilarious! I honestly never thought of eating chocolates that way. It’s funny how ingrained stuff is – like I know we would have gotten in trouble for that as a kid, so it just never occurred to me as a viable option as an adult. But what’s the harm? Have fun!
Don’t forget, your baby has two parents, so you can take turns getting drunk. 🙂
Finn is one cutie patootie!
occula says
Hah, I was going to say – I DID used to take a bite out of a chocolate, and if it was one of those weird flavors, I’d just give it to my brother! HE’D eat any flavor! 😀
Vivi @My.Beautiful.Air says
hahaha i take a bite and put it back too – that is the best way!
Johanna B says
Heck fire, they’re your chocolates – eat em the way you like. Happy V day.
Ashley O. @ The Vegetable Life says
Wow , I have never thought of eating a box of chocolates like that before but LOVE the idea! I bet my hubs would hate it tho!
Helen says
Just curious how well done your meat was. It looks pretty pink but it could be the lighting. One thing I missed while pregnant was eating stek as rare as I usually get it. Not tht you need to follow all the ‘what not to eat hen pregnant’ guidelines. I swear if you did everything ‘they’ say you wouldn’t feel safe eating anything!
KathEats says
Yeah it was medium rare. Probably a little pinker than advised.
ES says
Oh it’s FINE.
Jenn says
I do the same with chocolates. I can make one last 2 days! And, we lattes and cappuccinos…they’re so sweet, so I’ll get one on the way to school, get a 1/2 cup of coffee and add the the sweet drink to it for 2 days!
TeenyLittleSuperChef says
What a fun date night! Especially being able to end it with your very own box of chocolates. I’m all about tasting each one first before deciding which are worth eating the whole piece. Life is too short to waste it on yucky chocolates, if I do say so myself. Hmm, maybe I should have had a Valentine’s Day shirt printed with that saying 🙂
veggiefoodie says
gearhart’s is my favorite. i get a box every time i come back to town… and i don’t like to share! 😀

ha! This pg lady also requested a box of chocolates for Valentines Day. I’ve never wanted one before and can’t see myself making my way through a whole box next year but I’m enjoying this as a treat.

I just have two things to say:
1. Congratulations (so much!!) on the bebe a-coming and
2. I do the same thing to my chocolates 🙂
ered says
maybe make that 3 things –
3. “Don’t give me an errand!” (-J. Gaff. So funny. I was going to post about hot pockets but I’m pregnant too and don’t want to think about those things right now lol)
