*Shudders*
Got up and packed for Cali this AM. Always do the most important things of the day first! I am bringing a teeny little suitcase for my 48 hours there and needed to pack each article of clothing and each accessory to minimize the items. Can I just say that my shoes are taking up more space in my suitcase than my clothes!?
Came down and knew it was a big day. A jar was ready!!!
- 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup soy milk, 1/2 cup water [Used 1/2 a cup today because knew toppings would be minimal!]
- 1 med extra ripe banana
- 1 spoonful chia seeds
- Pinch salt, splash vanilla
- ~1 tbsp remaining TJ’s PB on the bottom
- Salty peanuts to complete the flavor circle
Half decaf Spring Blend, Half Mara‘s Peruvian Blend
I was excited to dig in…
BUTTTTTTT……………………..
A ROACH DECIDED TO JOIN ME FOR BREAKFAST!! What’s odd is that it’s not spider season here in NC and I’ve been coming down in the mornings to find dead + alive medium-sized spiders in the house. I don’t like spiders, but they are not as bad as roaches because they are slow moving.
However, this morning, I did NOT see a spider for the first time in a few days. Weird.
I also noticed that one of the living room chairs had been moved. Weird.
I proceeded to make breakfast and before I’d had a chance to take even one bite, I noticed a huge roach – in the daylight (they seem to be mostly nocturnal) – coming across the dining room floor.
AHHHHHH
I didn’t want to lose sight of him, but I raced to the garage shelf and got the spray (my only defense – not going to get close enough to stomp on him with flip flops on).
I arrived just in time to see him go under this baseboard and sprayed away.
I didn’t know what to do next. I didn’t want to leave the room in case he came back out, but I didn’t want to eat breakfast in there either. My appetite was gone!
A few minutes of just standing there shaking, I started to hear some noises in the wall. Fluttering noises that suggested maybe the spray had gotten to him.
You can imagine my surprise when all of a sudden he just came running out of the crack – I was too close for comfort!!!!
Then he ran – obviously affected by the spray – all around the dining room and even GOT ON MY TABLE! The nerve of that dumb roach!!
[Of course I was photographing the whole thing 😉 ]
Finally he got in a space where I could spray him again. (Was not going to spray my table!)
Got him good.
And then put a bowl on him, just for extra protection.
Thank you Ortho Max.
NOTE: I do not like killing ANY animals nor watching them suffer. It does upset me – even for a roach. I do not kill creatures in the wild (except for when semi-poisonous snakes too close to the garage for comfort). But when a creature comes into my house, they have crossed the line. I have no mercy.
My oats didn’t taste very good 🙁 My stomach is kind of turned.
OH – and remember the chair that was moved? I bet Matt saw this roach last night and tried to get him and was not quick enough!! Left him for me to have to deal with 👿

there are a ton of spiders outside the house we’re buying and i’m already freaked out about them!
JENNA says
you oats looked super good this a.m. too!! :-/
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
OHmigosh I am so afraid of Roach’s. Those oats look delish in the jar, however!
Shannon (The Daily Balance) says
yikes! well, never a dull moment, huh?! Congrats on the fitness mag mention, that is fantastic!
Have a great afternoon!
Sarah @ The Foodie Diaries says
Hahaha I have done the SAME thing with the bowl. So scary! Sorry you couldn’t enjoy the oats, but at least you started your day on a productive note?
Courtney says
What if the roach moved the chair?!? Hee hee…just kidding…don’t want to freak you out even more! Sounds like a semi-traumatic morning! You can only go up from here!

Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
there was a roach in my spinning class today, too! it must be that time of year… ick! congrats on the recognition by fitness mag! 🙂
emmy - eatventures says
Congrats on the Fitness mention! Your house is a zoo, you need a kitty to help you with pest control! Apparently we have bugs (my husband shared this info with me during a fight) but thank goodness I’ve somehow never seen one here!
Lindsey (Mrs. LC) says
ahahaha I can totally relate! A little bit ago I had turned my back in the kitchen and turned back around to see a roach crawling around the bottom of my mug that I had some cereal in. Freaked. the Heck. Out. Then the stupid roach crawled into my just-cleaned dishwasher. I got more dishwasher soap, threw it in there and quickly turned the dishwasher on. Death by steaming/ over heating/ drowning? Never saw him again…
I also had another time where when I got into my husband’s truck a spider crawled onto my skirt. I screamed like a baby. Hubby to the rescue! lol
Whitney @ Lettuce Love says
I heart Dwight! He is one of the best characters ever. I hate having to kill bugs — good thing my roomie is ok with it 🙂 I chicken out everytime!
Abby (Abby's VeGaN Eats) says
Okay so I also live in NC and totally had a roach run across my living room carpet as the hub and I were watching some History Channel action last night! It freaked me out bc I always assume roaches are reserved for “dirty” places and our house could not be ANY cleaner. Oh well.. its that time of year I suppose! ENjoy cali. JEALOUS.
Mara @ What's For Dinner? says
OOH what a way to use Spring blend! I have a bunch of it, and find the flavor to be overwhelming sometimes… Congrats on the Fitness thing 🙂 Gave you a little shout out last night!
Steph says
I hate roaches too. Gross!
Thanks for the Dwight link. I cannot wait to read them!
MelissaNibbles says
Congrats on the mention in Fitness!
I love Dwight, but have been feeling let down with The Office the past few seasons. Too much emphasis on Jim and Pam is ruining the show I think.
Anyway, good luck with the packing!
brandi says
i hate killing bugs, too, but I also don’t want them in my house! sorry about the oats not tasting good 🙁
Colleen says
Kath, I think we are roach/onion twins! Roaches and onions completely freak me out! The only thing that could have made your morning worse would be if someone snuck an onion in your oatmeal.
I hope your day gets better!! 🙂
BethT says
I sort of want to see a roach in Sonoma to see how you’d react in person…hahaha. Kidding. Sort of.
christie, honoring health says
I love your little roach stories! Great recap of the mornings events!
Good luck with the packing!
Colleen says
Oh, and I agree with the commenter who said you need a kitty! We have two kitties now and they are like an alarm system for bugs in the house! They don’t stop until the bug is dead and sometimes digested. 😐
Unfortunately one bug stung my kitties lip, but she didn’t back down. And her lip was swollen for three days. That’s my Birdie! 🙂
Anne Marie@Her New Weigh says
If I saw a roach in the house I would be freaking out! Way to go get em, Kath!
The Healthy Apple says
Congrats on the Fitness mention, Kath…good for you!!! That’s wonderful!! WOW…your extra ripened banana in your oats is making my mouth water…yum.
Safe travels and have fun!!!!
Lauren says
Have you tried Boric Acid? My roommate and I had problems w/roaches in the condo we lived in in college. No matter how clean we were, just the fact that the unit was 20+ years old meant they were in the walls. We lined the baseboards with boric acid and that seemed to help. We bought it at Lowe’s.
Lauren says
PS–I freak when I see Roaches too!! I can kill them, but I won’t pick them up & flush them. I make the BF do that. In college, said roommate and I tag-teamed the roaches. One would grab the Raid, the other a heavy LSAT study guide. We’d stand on a chair or something(we refused to get close to it), one would spray it and the other would slam the book on it. Then one of us would stomp on the book for good measure, while the other went and got the neighbor to flush it 🙂
Rose says
Congrats on the Fitness mention!
Dawn says
ICK You’re very brave! haha I probably just would have run in the other direction–so NOT good with bugs!
Congrats on being mentioned by Fitness magazine! 🙂
Julia says
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH I HATE those roaches… What a morning;)
xxx Julia (Taste of Living)
Anna says
Why would you “recap” the death of another living creature, even if it is a “gross” one? This post made me feel bad for the roach 🙁
Bekah says
Usually I jump ON the table.. but I guess that wouldn’t have worked here.
Does the banana sweeten it enough for you? All that peanut butter and peanuts, I would probably add honey to it. But that’s just me. 🙂
love love love your blog.
Melissa says
Oh my gosh! You crack me up with your roach story! – Great job though, haha…AND you got pictures to share, LOL!
Good luck with you day and trip to CA! 🙂
I love the Dwight quote you featured, hehe – love him!
Also, just took a list at all of the blogs featured by Fitness magazine – just wanted to say that yours is BY FAR the best looking/overall best blog listed! 🙂
WendyF says
No roaches here in Cali 🙂 so you will get a one day rest from them.
Meredith (Pursuing Balance) says
Eww I hate roaches too!!! I honestly wouldn’t have been able to get close enough to put the bowl on top. I don’t like killing/hurting things (hellooo, vegan) but if there’s a roach in my house then it’s war!
Melissa says
I meant to say ***just took a LOOK*** above, haha. Not “just took a list”
sue says
ahh you’re brave to even look at them! I had to quickly scroll over the bug pics. blech!
Jenn (www. j3nn.net ) says
Sorry about your uninvited breakfast guest. 🙁 Funny dialogue though! lol The jar of oats still looked yummy. 🙂
Congrats on the Fitness magazine blog mention!
Jenn
Lindsay @ bananaandchocolate says
Ew! I hate roaches! I love that you put a bowl over him, totally something I would do.
Fallon says
Oh man that’s a big roach! I would also put a bowl over my roach and wait for my man to come home to take care of it. I couldn’t never image squashing it with my hands or feet! ewwww
Kelly says
ahhhhh, I hate roaches so so much, they get in my apartment and I freak out! My BF laughs at me because when I see one I literally shriek at the top of my lungs, jump across the room in one leap, run to my closet for the vacuum screeching, plug it in and suck that thing up with the hose (screaming when I get close to it), all in about 15 seconds. good job getting that one 🙂
Holly says
i could not love dwight schrutte more. or oats in a jar. one of my best friends is moving to charlotte next week – any tips on places to go, helpful charlotte tidbits or anything? she is really nervous, and i obviously thought the lovely food bloggers would be able to help out 🙂
sflunchreview says
Dwight Schrutte is awesome!
Kate says
ewwww — gross roach! good for you for putting your foot down, so to speak 🙂
oats in the pb jar looked delicious, as always.
Heather says
Sorry to hear your breakfast was ruined with the roach sighting. I remember the first time I saw a roach when I lived in Georgia – I don’t think I have ever screamed so loud and I think I lost 10 years of my life – they are so scarry!
shawna says
Yuck on the roaches!!! We’ve never had them here, but we did have house centipedes when we moved in. Talk about FAST!
Hope your day improves!
Great news on the FITNESS recommendation!
HeatherBakes says
Ewwww. While visiting my in-laws a couple of weeks ago in SC, I encountered my first palmetto bug. In the bathroom. It was terrifying!!! Like a giant roach. The worst part was when my father in law decided that it had come from the open light fixture in the ceiling… I was too scared to use that bathroom afterwards.
Tammy says
Roach = disgusting. Fitness Magazine shout out = Awesome!!! Go Kath!
natalie shaw says
ha ha that is so funny! I HATE BUGS..ANY KINDA. Spiders, roaches, anything that is not human or animal. It would have spoiled my breakfast too!!
Marisa (Trim The Fat) says
Oh Kath, that is just gross! I hate bugs and I’m with ya on the “crossing the line” thing.
Congrats on the Fitness Mag list!
Just think, now you have room for a BIG lunch!
Ali says
WOW, congrats on the mention in Fitness!
Yikes about the roach, that would make me loose my appetite too, it’s too bad too, that oatmeal looked so good! BOOO!
Rachel says
My friend told me that you are to never, ever step on roaches. If you step on a female the eggs can stick to your shoes and leave little roach eggs all over your house. Not sure if it’s true, but it’s good enough for me to never step on one!
Stephanie says
hahaha this post is hilarious, you crack me up!!
Food Makes Fun Fuel says
Congrats on Fitness magazine! That’s awesome!
Jessica says
Hiya Kath!
After a summer full of three different kind of ants in my home and spiders invading my mother’s home, i just thought I’d tell you a couple things that worked for us.
There is spray you can buy that you can spray inside and outside of your house: along the door frames, windows, door cracks, anywhere bugs would want to go. They cross this path, become sick and eventually pass on to buggy heaven. It keeps some out all together.
And like some mentioned… the only spiders/other big bugs i ever find (we don’t have roaches here) are already dead because of my cat! i know finding any bug is gross and scary, but better finding one already gone than having to kill it and then toss it! cats are great bug hunters 😀
and congrats!
and good luck 🙂
Hallie (Healthy Twists) says
Gross…I would seriously freak out if that were me! But at least it’s over with and now you have CA (even if it’s nor Cal, boo) to look forward to!!
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
YIKES! You have way too many of those creatures! So darn icky. I can’t even imagine finding one in my own house!
Sounds like you have a busy day ahead of you! 🙂
Amanda @ Cakes and Ale says
OMG.
I found the biggest centipede I’ve ever seen in my life – and I’ve seen some big bugs in my day – crawling in my sink last week. My heart literally stopped, I was so freaked out.
I drowned the bastard!
Caroline says
Ugh. I’ve had one of those suckers fly into my hair. I washed my hair for a good 20 minutes after that. I had a particularly stupid roach recently that I had to step over to get to the roach spray and it then started running towards me! I sprayed it and it kept coming at me! Ugh!
Beth @ DiningAndDishing says
hahahaha, i love how you photographed the whole episode!! glad you got him. i agree, if it comes in my house, show no mercy!
Naomi says
i was on the fitness website and saw that your blog was recommened, and well ti should be! its amazing 🙂 and you work so hard and deserve it, kath!
sorry about the roach incicent, but good thing you had that spray to get rid of the little guy!
yummy breakfast!
Jenna says
oats look good but i am sorry you didn’t like them! you are defs having a problem with those lil creatures in your house. busy busy day for you!!
have fun!
jenna
Angela (Oh She Glows) says
that quote from Dwight is the best!!!
Glad you got the roach. I have horrible memories of those when I loved in Georgia and FL. They used to fly at our heads at night time!!!!
Kath says
Colleen,
Hahaha. That def. would have been worse!
BethT,
Dear god no!
Lauren,
I’ve heard that reced before. These are really palmetto bugs that just come inside the house. I don’t think they really live in the walls, so I’m not sure if it would help much.
Meredith,
I wouldn’t have except that he was on his back dying by then!
Bekah,
Ripe ones, yes.
Melissa,
Thanks!
Holly,
Tell her to email me when she gets here!
Jessica,
I think that’s what this spray does too?
Kath
Zdubb says
OMG, you are so brave. I would’ve collapsed if I saw that roach. I’m so confused…. did he think flying on the table was going to make you happy? No sir!
Too bad you had to use such a nice bowl to trap him. Now you’ll be thinking about that when you use the bowl next time. Stay strong in the fight against critters!
Carrie says
OMGosh! When I was in high school/lived at home, if I saw a spider/bug on the ground I could not come close enough to kill it so I would grab a cup/bowl and put it over the bug. Then after school when my mom or brother came home I would make them kill it. It would crack them up to come home to see a cup in the middle of the room on the floor. LOL!
Morgan (lifeafterbagels) says
WHOA – Kath, that is too much laughing for me while reading one post. Further more, it delights me that you photographed the whole thing!
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
How nice of Matt to leave you to be the hitman. My stomach would have turned too.
LOVES KERF!! says
Kath–*SHUDDERS*
If you’re seiing roaches in the daytime, you have major infestation. Only the weakest come out in daylight for food. Get some cobat discs or call someone to spray. xo
Kath says
GAH – I always do that!! Oops.
Kath
Lauren says
Hi Kath! I love your blog and read it at least once a day! I don’t want this to come out the wrong way, but you said that you hate killing things, yet you eat meat?? Isn’t this a little hypocritical? I seriously am not trying to be one of those mean commenters, because I LOVE you and your blog, but I was just wondering how you justify this?
Thanks!
Have a great day! 🙂
Lynn @ The Actors Diet says
ha – you and your roach fears!
i have a question re: bottom of the PB jar oats….do you think the heat leeches from the plastic container?
Karen says
Too funny about the roach! I thought I was the only one that sprayed them to death with anything from bug spray to hair spray and then trap them for good measure. Hilarious!
Heather McD (Heather Eats Almond Butter) says
I’m so sad that the roach ruined your oats in a jar. 🙁
Lizzy says
yikes i hate bugs.
Kath says
Lauren,
Yes, I suppose it is a bit hypocritical. But I do feel like we are killing animals to nourish and fuel our bodies, whereas killing bugs is more of a phobia (that I can’t get over!) without furthering the species. Yes, we can survive without meat, but it is very nutritious. What I cringe about most about the whole roach/snake ordeal is the suffering. I am trying harder and harder to spend my dollars at the market on meal from farms in my area that treat animals humanely.
Kath
Kath says
Lynn,
I don’t think the oats are quite hot enough to harm the plastic.
Kath
Tay says
I had oats in a jar today too! Oh dear I loved your roach story (but I am sorry!!!). Of course you’re running around with a camera, right? LOL. Glad you finally got him!!
Seth @ Boy Meets Food says
Since you don’t like killing the animals, did you get a chance to check out that coffee grounds article I posted in a comment a while back? It is a way to get them out of the house without killing them, and is easy, “green”, and inexpensive. If you want, I can look it up again and re-post, just let me know.
Dee says
I love this story. I live in NY where roaches are like birds, they are everywhere. I am lucky to live in a apt on the 6th floor, where we have an amazing exterminator. Also my cat is hunts anything down that moves.
