Today we got a taste of summertime in the form of a great potluck picnic at Karen’s!
On my way home from work I snacked on a Fruition in preparation for a quick workout. There are like a combo of a Larabar and a Fig Newton.
Matt and I both exercised in Karen’s condo’s gym before heading down to the party.
Side Note
This is going to sound really dumb, but my life has changed recently when I realized I don’t have to wash my hair after every workout! Part of the reason I hate working out in the afternoons is I hate the second shower of the day. I hate getting all wet and having wet hair (or having to blow dry it). Well since I’ve had to make afternoon workouts a regular occurrence, I’ve just been putting my hair up and rinsing off. I mean, I get up and take another shower anyways, so my hair doesn’t have to look nice most evenings. It’s made ALL THE DIFFERENCE in my happiness and attitude towards afternoon workouts!!
So tonight I just lightly pulled my hair back and did 35 minutes on the elliptical followed by a super set of 40 pushups and some abs. Workout done in 45 minutes. Then I just rinsed off (didn’t even wash my face hard enough to require a new makeup application) and I was ready to roll. [Doubt I could do this if I went running in 90* though!]
I was thrilled to see lots of BEANS and salads on the table!! I used to hate baked beans and now they are one of my very favorite foods! They are usually made with real food. Who cares if they’re a bit high in sugar – the fiber in the beans probably balances that out. Yums!
[Anyone have a crockpot recipe for baked beans with pineapple!? I bet that would be really good!]
I filled my plate with a taste of all the goods:
Fruit, some chopped salads, 3 kinds of beans, chips, hiding pickles and shrimp.
Someone handed me a rum-based frozen fruit drink and I slurped it down. DELICIOUS!
And lastly, I had to make a stop at the dessert table. A little melted vanilla ice cream topped with a berry pie. I didn’t end up eating it all ’cause I was so full, but what I did chomp down was excellent and made my day 🙂
Back home and ready to do some lounging (after I pack my lunch 🙁 )
[NO NEWS on any of our fun things today! I can’t believe it. Hope that’s not a bad sign!]
Nite!
Ashley says
What an excellent buffet. Is that a gummy bear in your dessert? Looks like a delicious Memorial Day. Have fun lounging!
Whitney @ Whitinspired says
Looks like a good time! What a spread of food!
Katherine says
divine time!
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
Glad you got to have a little fun and enjoy the holiday. You could also try dry shampoo for your after workouts. I don’t know how well it works, but other people that workout seem to really like it.
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
Where do you get your Frutition bars and are they reasonably priced. They seem expensive around here.
Kath says
I got them from the company – a sample pack a while ago. But I’d order them by the case when I’m all out.
Food Makes Fun Fuel says
Wow! Now THATS a selection!
Whitney says
Dry Shampoo. Works wonders! I prefer Ojon from Sephora.. pricey, but worth it.
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
Mmm that buffet looks delicious! And those look like baked chips – i love it when there’s healthy things to munch on at parties!
Kath says
Not baked – just good!
Hannah says
As my mum said to me yesterday – no news is good news! And melty ice cream is the best news of all (I added the last part).
Erin says
Yum! I love potluck suppers, especially when there are a lot of tasty and healthy options. It’s fun to try a little taste of everything.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i look for any excuse not to wash my hair – every two days is fine by me – after exercise, after it has a ton of product in it, whatever! and i have to say, i work with a ton of hair experts and they’ve all told me i’ve got the nicest head of hair they’ve ever styled!
lisa says
That looked like a great dinner, and love how many bean options there were. I feel like people put so much energy into meats and dairy that they forget about wonderful beans as a protein.
I’m not one for showering after an afternoon workout either, unless I know I’m going to skip a morning shower. It’s much more pleasant.
Trish @IamSucceeding says
It all looks like an awesome way to kick summer off!!
Wei-Wei says
Yum yum! Looks delicious. I used to hate beans as well, because I always thought they were “mushy” and now I… well, tolerate them. 😉
Potluck picnics are the best. I hope you had a great time! 🙂

Lisa says
I rarely shampoo my hair. I only shampoo about 2x a week after swimming. The rest of the time I just use conditioner. Much better on my hair!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
YUM!! What a meal! I looove baked beans too, especially maple onion baked beans!
Jenny says
Thanks for the post-workout shower advice!
Krystina says
I wish I looked that nice after a work out. I don’t wash my hair after afternoon work outs either.
mary ann says
check out Paula Deans pineapple baked bean recipe!!!
Maceyb says
I second Paula Deen’s baked bean recipe!!http://www.pauladeen.com/index.php/recipes/view/sue_and_glorias_baked_beans/
Marissa says
I always base my showers around when I’m going to workout! On the weekends and soon-to-be-summer I work out in the mornings, so I take morning showers. During the school week I work out in the evenings, so I take night showers! But I have dry hair, so I only have to wash it twice a week or so… and I base my hardest workouts on the days I have to wash my hair, ’cause it doesn’t matter how sweaty I get! You’re right; it makes working out a lot more fun when you don’t have to worry about being clean then sweaty and then having to wash again.
Melissa Cari @ Miles for Markets says
OMG youre so funny about the hair! Same thing happened to me a few years ago. I realized I can even RUN without washing my hair sometimes (I have very thick hair). It has made a world of a difference! I’m happy for you that you figured it out!
Therese says
Looks like an amazing spread!!!
And if you do find you get paranoid about your hair, there are also a lot of “dry” shampoos out there that just take the oil and sweat out for those days when you’re really givin’ ‘er!
Last year my stylist told me to stop shampooing my hair so much. I have naturally curly hair and it’s the shampoo that makes it frizz! So I wash it about once a week but condition it every day. I’ve had no gross problems whatsoever and my hair’s never been better!
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
Hahaha you are a riot. I ONLY shower if I workout. So if I skip a workout….yeeeah. If I workout in the afternoon I shower after that and then I’m clean going to bed and when I wake up I’m read to go. I guess I’ve never been a must-shower-outta-bed person.
Marisa (Loser for Life) says
Glad you’re feeling better about your afternoon workouts. I have hit an all new level of stankiness! Most days after my morning workout, I run a bazillion errands and end up not getting my shower til the late afternoon or evening! Eeewwww. But like you said, it takes time to get all fixed up! I keep extra deodorant in my car 😉
Everything looks delicious, especially dessert!
Heather says
What a delicious looking buffet. I haven’t tried baked beans in years – perhaps if you find a good crock pot recipe I will give them a try.
I also hate washing my hair twice in one day – I oftentimes just rinse or don’t even wash my hair after a workout (unless I got really sweaty)!
Jo says
RE: Not hearing anything yet–it is a holiday in the U.S., isn’t it? So likely a lot of people aren’t responding to business stuff today…don’t worry, just wait till tomorrow!
Kath says
Yeah, but they *said* we would hear today!! Just anxious 🙂
Lindsay @ Summit Sandwiches says
Since I have curly hair that is prone to being overly dry, I look for ways to avoid the full wash and shower. I like to wet it and then just slap in some conditioner otherwise my hair just gets too gross and dry for words. A quick rinse + leave-in conditioner is the way to go! 🙂
Btw, that buffet looks glorious! Nomnomnom.
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
I also don’t wash my hair after every workout – it has been so freeing!
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
My hair does better if I don’t wash it everyday. So I usually just rinse it.
Allie says
i wash my hair in the morning and work out at lunch and i never wash my hair after a workout- i just put it up and shower and reapply makeup. if i sweat a lot i have tried dry shampoos and they aren’t bad. either way always works. i couldn’t imagine washing and drying twice in a day- so hard on your hair.
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
Yummy spread of food! I know what you mean about the hair washing thing- I do it, too. When workouts are in the morning, washing hair’s no big deal..but that’s not so with afternoon workouts.
Anyway looks like you had a fabulous Memorial Day! Hopefully you’ll hear some news tomorrow. 🙂
Heather says
I would die if I had to wash my hair twice a day! I just pull it back in a ponytail until the next day/wrkout.
Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
That’s what I hate about workouts in the middle of the day, I hate getting sweaty and needing a shower. Unfortunately, I can’t let my hair stay sweaty because it gets so greasy. 🙁
Very nice potluck buffet. Yummy! <3 beans
Jenn
Lisa @bakebikeblog says
oooh what an amazing buffet spread! Love it!
Jil @ Peace, Love & Munchies says
That potluck looks awesome! I recently have come to love baked beans via Jenna’s recipe for them! Yum!
Jen says
Food looks yum!
I learned last year I don’t have to wash my hair after working out at night! I cannot believe I used to wash my hair twice a day, so I feel ya 😉
Lauren @ eater not a runner says
Baked beans are awesome, I just rediscovered them too 🙂
Stacy (StacyGrowsHealthy) says
The spread looks really tasty. I wish I could get away without washing my hair after every workout.
Amanda says
You’re certainly not alone in your new hairwashing discovery. It’s actually been my saving grace this year (except on hot yoga nights, can’t skip then). As long as I wash my bangs I’m good!
Veggielady4life says
Glad you decided against a second hair wash. Life’s in the little things… you know…
Abby says
I actually only wash my hair every other day…the day I figured out that I could do that, I was THRILLED! It’s like I get to sleep in every other day or something!
L @ WholewheatOrbust says
One of my fave recipes is crockpot baked beans with pineapple (!!). Super easy with the crock pot.
Combine 3 cans baked beans and 1 can of diced pineapple (drain just a tiny) in the crockpot. Finely chop a small onion and throw that in there with 1/4 cup natural ketchup and 1/4 cup bbq sauce. Add salt, pepper, 1 chopped garlic clove, a dash cayenne pepper, and 2 tsp dijon mustard. Cook on low heat for several hours!
Kath says
Thanks! So you use already baked beans or just navy beans?
hemp jogger says
kath, that is hysterical about the washing the hair work-out thing…but it truly is life-changing! dirty hair is now my friend…as is product that disguises it 😉
also, as a huge-mongo lover of bakes beans, i once saw paula deen make something similar to your request, w/ the pineapple/slow cooker. maybe check foodnetwork.com?
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
Lol…I love that lone gummy bear in your dessert 🙂
I don’t always wash my hair after a workout either, especially if it wasn’t a strenuous one!
Hayley @ Breath of Fire says
People have mentioned dry shampoos, but I use a dry mousse after workouts when my hair needs a lift. It soaks up grease and volumizes, which helps me out cause sweaty hair can get so limp! It comes in a little bottle and looks a lot like baby powder. Actually, baby powder probably works just as / almost as well.
Stacie @ Imperfectly Healthy says
The potluck looks like fun!
I’m going to have to try a Fruition bar. The combo of Larabar and fig newton has me intrigued!
Nicole, RD says
I hate having to do my hair all the time, too…and that’s one of my main excuses to skip a workout. But I have to wash my hair…I sweat SOOOO much!
Amber K says
The second shower of the day is sometimes hard, but I tend to skip washing my hair the first time since I know I’ll be in there a second time.
That looks like an amazing spread!
Melissa @ For the Love of Health says
great spread! I think I need to go to bed and stop reading blogs because I am only getting hungry lol
Camille says
Everything looks delicious!
I wish I could say the same thing for showering after workouts, but after 30 minutes on the Stairmaster, I am sweaty from head to toe 🙁
Michelle says
I haven’t had baked beans with pineapple, but several weeks back I had baked beans with PEACHES. They were SO GOOD!
Ellie says
Looks like fun! Welcome summer
Erin @ A Girl & Her Mutt says
I recently discovered that I didn’t have to wash my hair every time I took a shower. It is hard to get used to and then it just becomes second nature to skip every now and then.
No news is good news. 🙂
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
Ooh that spread looks good!! So much choice! I’m a big baked bean fan too, I just always forget to eat them :s
Have a good Tuesday!
Tish says
About the shampooing–live and learn! I remember the days when I washed and set my hair every single night and I had quite long, very thick hair. Now, 40 years later, I’m happy to say my hair is still very thick, medium length and I wash it about every four days. And it looks fine, unless I run in the middle of a hot, sticky day.
If you discover a good recipe for the crock pot pineapple baked beans, please share–my mouth is watering!
Jocelyn@JocelynEatsFresh says
mmm…your plate with the beans/salad/fruit etc looks so yummy! Looks like a fantastic potluck! Also..I totally agree with you about having to do the full shower/blowdry/makeup thing in the late afternoon…to me it’s just a waste of time.
jenny-lee says
try adding diced onion, a granny smith apple, and a dash of mustard to your beans (okay, and top with bacon for extra goodness 🙂 – just tried this recipe last night and it was fantastic.
lisa says
Kath, This is my Aunt Janine’s recipe from Amarillo, TX. This is my #1 recipe I’ll use for the rest of my life I love it so much. No pineapple, but I bet you could just throw a handful in there instead of brown sugar 🙂 This makes a huge amt good for bbqs, so you’d have to adjust for a smaller amt.
Aunt Janine’s 5 Bean Casserole
1/2 lb. bacon, chopped
2 med. onions, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1/2 c. packed brown sugar
1/2 c. apple cider vinegar
1 tsp. each: salt, garlic powder, turmeric and dry mustard
1 16 can kidney beans
1 16 can lima beans
1 16 can butter beans
1 16 can pinto beans
1 16 can Morton House beans
Brown bacon, onions and bell pepper in skillet. Stir in brown sugar, vinegar and seasonings. Simmer fro 20 minutes. Add beans; mix well. Pour into greased 3 quart casserole. Bake at 350 degrees F for 1 hour or until bubbly. Yield: 20 servings. Better on the 2nd day!
Kath says
Yum, thanks!!
Seth @ Boy Meets Food says
I don’t put pineapple in my baked beans, but from time to time, I will open a can of peach pie filling and drop it in. VERY YUM!
Amanda says
I totally don’t wash my hair after every workout. It just feels like I’m drying my hair out if I wash my hair too much.
