Aunt Larbs and Uncle Matt came to visit us this past weekend. We had a blast eating and drinking (per usual) and keeping Mazen at the center of attention.
They arrived late on Friday night, and Matt and I had pizzas underway.
Whole wheat crust with two kinds of cheese.
One with shitake mushrooms, lamb sausage, tomato sauce and fontina
And the other with veggies and homemade mozzarella
Salads on the side!
We all shared this beer, which is now on my top 10 beer list. It was incredible!!
Saturday we enjoyed French toast, went running in shifts and came back to a make-your-own lunch bar with everything in our fridge
Our afternoon was spent wine tasting –
We went to Stinson first and really enjoyed their wines
Matt and I bought the Sugar Hollow Red
Next we went to White Hall (our first visit there) and were blown away by the wines!
Matt and I bought the Chardonnay, Cab and Petit Verdot, which was our favorite
Sleepy head napped most of the visit but then came out to play!
Larbs has been wanting to go to Zocalo for YEARS and we made it the highlight of this trip. We got the usual for dinner: the fritters, scallops and relleno pepper (my favorite entrees in town!) and threw in a wild card this time: the rockfish.
Larbs actually liked the scallops and their carrot-vanilla sauce the best!
The next morning:
Brunch at Commonwealth! Our favorite brunch spot in town.
I had the lobster and cod cakes eggs benedict, which were amazing. Salad on the side
I gave one of my stacks to Matt in exchange for some of his entrée – the Caribbean Veggie Benedict
Another amazing few days of food.
And another a-MAZEN weekend!

That pizza looks amazing! Any tricks (from you or matt) for tossing the dough? I’m always tearing it.
Matt says
The trick is that you really don’t have to do the stereotypical flinging and swirling! Get each pizza kneaded into a dough ball and let it relax for 10-15 minutes. Use a rolling pin and a lightly floured surface to get it started. If you get to a point and it’s really springy then feel free to let it relax again for 5min. Once it’s maybe 75% the size you want, you can pick it up and let it droop over the back side of your hands. Use gravity to stretch the edges, while pulling your hands in opposite directions (lightly!) to stretch the interior of the pizza. Rotate slightly and keep doing this until it’s the desired size. If it feels like it’s going to rip, it is! Just try not to put any more stretch on an area that feels too thin.
Laura Lea says
I’ve had this problem too, and your response was super helpful. Thanks Matt!
Lauren @ Sassy Molassy says

The first thing I thought when I saw that vineyard was, “Barney Stinson has his own vineyard?”. And then I realized that this probably wasn’t the case considering that Barney Stinson is a fictional character, lol. Anyhoo, looks like you all had a great time!

Wow, what a way to make me jealous. From the yummy food and tasty wine to the word play on Mazen’s name. My daughter’s name is Penelope and it always auto corrects to penetrate (gross!) on my phone. This has me very concerned for her future as a texting tween.
KathEats says
Hahaha! Maybe phones will be smarter then : )

My daughter’s name is Penelope too! I never thought of that possible nickname. Oh dear, we’re in trouble! 😐

What a perfect weekend — good food, good wine and time with family.
Each time you post a picture of Zocalo’s relleno pepper, I am seriously left drooling. I may have to take a special trip to Cville just so I can get it out of my system 😉 But really, that crust looks incredible! 🙂
Emily @ www.main-eats.com says
I would give just about anything to eat some of your pizza-it always looks SO good! What a great looking weekend, glad you got to spend time with your family!

Hi Kath,
I have a question about tuna. I normally buy the low sodium kind (I eat the entire 120 gram can in one meal for myself). But I could only buy regular tuna today. The ingredients are : skipjack tuna, water, and salt. And the sodium for the entire can is 300 mg…is that still a CLEAN, healthy , real choice? I hope so…
I also eat a lot of fish (mainly sardines and salmon, also halibut, cod, and tuna occasionally …usually 5 nights a week. Too much?).
KathEats says
I think that amount of sodium is fine if you don’t have a clinical reason to watch it. 5 nights a week sounds like a lot..I’d go with every other night Max, but that’s just my personal opinion of variety. Some populations do eat fish daily
Wendy says
Those pizzas look delish and so does that a-mazen darling boy of yours!
There’s something about a sleeping baby and their pudgy lil’ cheeks and hands, oh, I just don’t have the words to describe how adorable!
Kristin says
Ohmygosh that pizza!! I’ve used your whole wheat dough recipe a ton, and it is always a hit!
Diana @ Eating Made Easy says
I LOVE wine tasting! So great to see you took Mazen too. Where can I find your whole wheat pizza crust recipe? I’ve been making my own for a long time but I’m always open to try something new.
Thanks!
KathEats says
It’s on my Recipage! “whole wheat pizza dough”
Diana @ Eating Made Easy says
Looks so good! I’ve never added olive oil. Thanks!

Not related to this post…but today is National Peanut Butter Day! I would love to see a post about your favorite nut butters or what to look for when picking up nut butter, or your favorite recipes that include nut butter 🙂
Morgan says
It is remarkable how much you two as couples look alike!
Patty says
Perhaps this comment/question has already been posted but I can’t help but notice how much your husband and Larb’s husband-to-be look so similar to each other and they have the same first name…OMG…you two sisters obviously have similar tastes. When Larbs first started dating Matt what did you think? Did you see the similarities? Did your parents have a good laugh?
KathEats says
we don’t think they look as much alike as you guys do : ) but yes, the name is quite hilarious!
Nicole says
Mazen is getting cuter and cuter with each post!
Ali says
I didn’t know you made your own mozzarella? You mentioned homemade so I was curious where you get your ingredients?
