Missing old school KERF? Here’s a day in the life of a Mompreneur for ya!!
5:15
My alarm goes off playing Taylor Swift’s Wildest Dreams! Thomas and I get up but I’m slower than he is and he surprises me with coffee on my night stand <3
5:45
Leave house for my workout: Afterburn class. I have about 1/3 of my coffee before class but usually don’t have anything to eat. I greet my mug again on the ride home and am always so glad to have it!
6:10
Afterburn starts. This class is killer. I burn about 400 calories in 50 minutes according to my Apple Watch.
7:15
Back at home Birch is having breakfast. Thomas usually works until about 6:30 and then we tag team showering, breakfasts and getting Mazen on the bus. I take a speed shower and Birch terrorizes my room while I get dressed, pulling clothes out of drawers. I pick the room back up and we head back downstairs. He plays with his cups while I make breakfast.
7:30
We say goodbye to daddy who leaves for work. Birch didn’t eat much of his breakfast so he gets a second breakfast of yogurt and a little almond butter on a spoon (because he wants some of mine!)
8:00
I eat oats in a jar. Birchie and I play trucks for a bit while I have half a cup more coffee.
8:30
My babysitter arrives and I give B a big smooch before going upstairs to put on my makeup and brush my teeth (again).
9:00
I arrive at Grit Coffee and get decaf cappuccino and a cinnamon roll to take home for later. I put on my Mompreneur hat and work on my computer until 12, writing blog posts, working on a few site design tweaks, writing a newsletter, and voxing with some Beautycounter peeps. One reason I love going to 6am workouts is so I have a good chunk of uninterrupted focus time. It takes me a while to get in the zone and a while to come back out!
12:00pm
I’m back at home. Liz has just put Birch down for nap, so I have some lunch. I heat up a frozen meal from Splendid Spoon for lunch. They sent me some to test out. This is Cauliflower Tikka and is warming on a gray winter day. I love that the ingredient list is all real food.
12:30
I’m back to work trying to finish posts before nap ends! I never know if that will be 1:30 or 2:30.
2:30
Birchie is awake! He slept well today, which has not been the norm lately. I get him up and we wait for the school bus on his changing table.
2:40
Mazen arrives home!! Matt meets him at our house because Mazen is going there for the night. Mazen and Birch play tag for a bit.
3:00
Snacktime! Birch has a yogurt drink and I have a few bites of my cinnamon roll. Almonds would have been a better choice!
3:15
Birchie and I head outside for a stroller walk. It’s a sunny day!
4:00
Once we’re home again, we play for a bit until Thomas gets home.
5:00
YAY daddy is home!!!
5:30
I sneak out to a quick appointment at ACAC. I am getting some cryotherapy on my foot to see if it helps my chronic pain. The therapy is 5 minutes of freezing cold air blown onto your foot. It feels about the same as putting a bag of ice on (aka not pleasant). I don’t know how much good the cold is doing, but I think the warming massage that comes after is helping a lot. Thomas gives Birch dinner – a cheese quesadilla, a veggie pouch, and bits of Thomas’s dinner – while I’m gone.
6:00
Back at home I enjoy leftovers for dinner – sausage, asparagus, roasted veg, brown rice. I added some greek yogurt on top too. I talk to Thomas while he plays with Birch on the floor.
6:25
Thomas heads to a volleyball and then out to dinner with his buddies. B and I play trains until bath time.
6:45
Bath time!
7:00
Stories and night night. (Look at those post-bath curls!!)
7:15
I do the last of the tidying until I settle in with the latest episode of Survivor and get in bed to read at 8:30.
9:00
Night night!
(Thomas gets home at 9:30!)

I don’t get this “momprenuer” thing. I work full time and am a mom, but I don’t call myself a “momployee” or something.
Kath Younger says
Google it – it’s a thing and an industry on the rise as more women chase flexible careers.
https://www.entrepreneur.com/topic/mompreneurs
Penny says
It is a thing, however it also genders something that doesn’t need to be gendered. Many people want flexible careers for many reasons. I think its fair to call yourself an entrepreneur – you had a blog as a business before you had kids and stated previously you started it because you didn’t enjoy the 9-5 office life.
Please think about owning who you are as a person, and not what your reproductive history is. Your business successes stand on their own.
Jessica says
I love how you stated that! Thanks for putting into words the feelings I was having.
Kath Younger says
I understand what you’re saying and I don’t disagree with it, however I do think being more specific than “entrepreneur” is important to attract other like-minded women in a similar situation. For example, entrepreneur is probably googled a billion times a day. Mompreneur is much more specific and therefore others looking for information or other mom entrepreneurs might more easily find me. No offense to the dudes or dads, but they’re not my target blog reader. It’s not all that different than a dancer calling herself a ballerina or a baker calling herself a “cakepreneur.” People add a lot of silly words to “preneur” to make it more descriptive.
Shannon says
Not to be negative but this really struck a nerve with me. All I understand the term to be is a woman entrepreneur who happens to be a mom. It is not some industry or even recognized as a real word. Yes with the internet where people can sit at home and make money and more women in the workforce this is obviously going to be a growing sector in the country but I think the term is quite offensive personally. I get that it is a popular term in the MLM communities as there are many moms who work part time on some type of side hustle but it devalues the importance of the work they are doing to provide for the family. I think it is awesome if someone wants to work part time. I have 2 small children and am an entrepreneur running a decent size business but would never call myself a mompreneur. It devalues all of my hard work as an entrepreneur. I took big risks, have worked my tail end off, and am proud to have my company in a male dominated field. I also am able to have lunch every day with my kids and put them down for their afternoon nap. Having a flexible career though has nothing to do with the click bait phrase mompreneurer.
Kath Younger says
If it’s “not some industry or even recognized as a real word” why does Entrepreur.com have a whole vertical called Mompreneurs?
Wikipedia: “Mompreneur is a neologism defined as a female business owner who is actively balancing the role of mom and the role of entrepreneur. The term has a dedicated section on Entrepreneur magazine’s website. There is also a Canadian magazine devoted to the topic, The MOMpreneur Magazine.”
Karen says
They likely wrote the column in an attempt simply cash in on a trend. It’s a way of drawing in readers. I agree with the other posters; there is no need to coin a word that really doesn’t flow (to this copy-editor’s ears) in order to describe a woman, who is also a mother, who is an entrepreneur. For me, it falls into the category of words and phrases that downgrade the person, such as “girl boss”, a phrase I dearly loathe.
Karen says
Oops, missed a word. “They likely wrote the column in an attempt to simply cash in on a trend.”
Kath Younger says
Then they are some smart entrepreneurs copywriters! Because while some of you might not care for the word, it’s got 5x the search volume as “mom entrepreneur” (per Ubersuggest)
Karen says
Oh, I have no doubt it gets the clicks. But I wonder what people would think of a man who called himself a “boy boss” (“girl boss” is trending as well) or a “daddypreneur” or, heaven help us, a “workin’ dada.” I doubt he’d be taken very seriously by his peers. I just wish we could not use the cutesy neologisms. I feel that they really talk down to women. What if a woman is an entrepreneur but NOT a mom–does she get a cute word? What about being a mom + entrepreneur is noteworthy? These are just the questions raised by the new terminology.
Anyway, you do you, and by the way, your kids are adorable.
Kath Younger says
I think they talk down if they are said about women by men, but not women to women or about oneself. If a woman is an entrepreneur and not a mom, the word Fempreneur is one I’ve heard before. I know it’s controversial, but Boss Babe is the name of a a group of 1,000 women entrepreneurs in Charlottesville from all different industries – brick and mortar stores to creatives to accountants called “Boss Babes.” I think the Mompreneur trend is noteworthy because of the rise of women who are creating careers out of their homes and the issues around the work-life “tug of war.” Maybe that isn’t you, but there is a lot of conversation happening around this (see the Boss Mom website, podcast and community).
Courtney says
oh, don’t even get me started on ” girl boss” or “boss babe.” It then makes you think that only men can be bosses. Why are females trying to add gender to the word to make it worse for women! We (I) complain about equality of women, and then use derogatory words like “girl boss” to lessen the power of females.
Amanda says
How did you find your nanny/sitter? Will be looking for one next fall when my maternity leave is over but I’ll be in and out of the house all day (the nature of my job!).
Kath Younger says
Through a friend! It’s so hard to find good childcare.
Meghan says
I do really miss these kinds of posts. The articles you’ve had recently that are devoid of any personal content to me seem dry, and not different from what I could get any number of other places. I get that they might be improving site traffic and bringing new readers to you. I’ve also really missed more frequent updates. I know I’m a lone voice and maybe an outlier. But I know you mentioned wanting feedback as you tweaked things. So just wanted to mention I hope this personal content and regular updates continue in your new blog.
Kath Younger says
I get it! I really do. There was a time when I seriously considered going back to “old KERF” and blogging 3 times a day. I polled you guys and asked if you would want that and the majority of people said 3 posts a day – even short ones – was too much. So I compromised with weekend and week-long recaps and topics in between. I’m trying to infuse as many lifestyle posts as possible while still providing some content-based posts as well. There is always Instagram for all the lifestyle stuff. I’m on stories almost everyday 🙂
meghan says
Thanks for being so kind in your response. When I re-read, I noticed I sounded overcritical, and that wasn’t the intention at all. Of course I want you to be able to maximize your income and life balance and think you should do whatever that is.
It was just supposed to say that I really love this kind of post. I don’t have Instagram, but I’ll be on the lookout for more like this from you, and have an open mind about the new stuff!
Kath Younger says
That’s ok <3 Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
Justine says
Nope- I agree with this!!
Jamie says
I love these posts!

I don’t care what you call yourself – Entrepreneur or Mompreneur. I think both sound powerful. I commend you for juggling your different hats, contributing to the space, managing your BC, and being a mom to two boys! Among other responsibilities. I don’t understand getting so worked up over a term that is being recognized as a real term. Anyhow, you were very busy but seemed to use your time wisely. Love these posts and all posts you share!
Kimberly says
I just have to say that I appreciate this blog and all the work you put into it!
Kath Younger says
Thank you 🙂

I’m with your last commenter – why are some so defensive / joyless ? Keep doing what you’re doing – it’s great!
Kath Younger says
Thank you Louise!

amen–it’s a waste of time–I love reading this and you can call yourself what you want!!

Early morning workouts are the best! (Once they are over ?). They start my day on such a positive note, and like you said, it leaves the rest of your day open. I honestly don’t notice feeling more tired on days I wake up early to workout compared to days I don’t-if anything, the workouts give me energy.
Brandy says
Thanks for sharing! My children are older, but they are homeschooled and I am self-employed. I love the flexibility and availability that I have for my family and my work! I wish you all the best!

I love posts like this! I also enjoy seeing how you manage your day so well! You are a huge inspiration to me! You are always beyond positive and when I am able to read your posts; they bring joy to me from your attitude, fun outings y’all attend, etc. (I haven’t been out to do anything really fun in about two years… lol)
I hate sponsored posts but I do understand the reason for them!!! You do you and what ever that is to support your family! ?
Kath Younger says
Thank you <3

Hi Kath, I never comment even though I’ve been reading the blog for a million years! You helped me on my journey to food freedom and for that I will be forever gratful to you!
I’d just like to chip in to the conversation to say… this is YOUR BLOG you can identify yourself however you like! And for the readers so quick to criticise the use of a single playful word, if we shoot people down for being themselves, using the expressions and languages they favour in their everyday life ( for me precisely why I love blogs like Kaths where we get an honest insight into someone else’s life) people will end up feeling too worried to express themselves at all and we’ll end up with a very sterile blog community and wider creative sector if we keep on jumping down people’s throats for the slightest thing that doesn’t match our values! I’m sure we’re all feminists here who want the best for our fellow women so let’s maybe harness that into supporting each other rather than telling each other off.
Meant with love not malice!
Xx
Kath Younger says
Thank you so much for this! I totally agree.
Caitlin says
Loved old-school KERF day in the life post!!! <3<3<3
Also, whatever whatever to all the complaints about the phrase!!! You do you and you ROCK it! Who cares what we call it. Everyone is hustling and people need to remember that there are much more important things to worry about. Love to you and your willingness to put it all out there, despite the judgement!
Kath Younger says
<3
Pam says
People need to chill out! It’s the name of a blogpost. Don’t we have bigger things to worry about right now? I believe Kath can say what wants to say and how she wants to say it. If you don’t agree, just don’t read any further.
Carla Reyes says
Oh.my.gosh.y’all. Beyond the very important business reasons she has cited for using the term Mompreneur, IF SHE WANTS TO IDENTIFY AS A MOM ENTREPRENEUR let her?! Like, why are you telling her how to identify and what aspects of her roles are acceptably important?!
I enjoyed this post, Kath. I’m a mom of a 2 YO and a 6 MO and want to start my own business soon. All of these things were relevant to me as I pursue a life filled with being a MOM ENTREPRENEUR.
Sheesh.
Kath Younger says
haha thanks Carla!
