NO, no we’re not using a filter, I promise!!
It’s just REALLY green around here!
I made this smoothie with a Fage strawberry yogurt (one of the kinds with some jam on the side) along with vanilla protein (Arbonne’s), frozen banana, milk, and a handful of raw oats. It was the JAM! Some fresh raspberries and Cville Cluster Granola on top.
I’ve been consistently making two smoothies at once and putting one away for a snack or tomorrow’s breakfast. So that same smoothie I had the next day with blueberries and more cluster crunch. GAH that Cville Cluster Granola is so good!!
Little Birchie is not quite loving oatmeal yet. He LOVES purees from a jar – ones that are basically liquid. But he’s not too wild about thicker textures yet. I started with mashed foods and they were too thick, and I’ve also tried the nearly-powdered oatmeal and he takes a few bites and then decides he’s done. I added some prunes and cinnamon to this oatmeal and he still wasn’t into it. I hope this isn’t a bad sign for the future!! I think it’s just the texture though. I will keep trying!
Lunches of late have revolved around Plenty’s sweet potato + lentil salad, which was so darn delicious! I topped it with leftover chicken and some pimento cheese for an easy lunch.
The next day I had it with a sliced sausage and massaged kale. I let Birch try one of the sweet potato cubes mashed and his little tongue didn’t really know what to do with it.
Also from Plenty – a yummy curried tuna salad with raisins, chopped apples, and celery. Thomas and I ate this all week!
I made some kale chips for the first time in a while for an easy quiche dinner side. I have missed them and need to remember to buy kale so I can make more!
I am 36.5 years old and I do not have to pronounce gyros. Is it HEROS or GI-ROS or YEE-ROS!? I feel like as soon as I decide it’s one thing someone calls it something else. Perhaps it’s getting lost in translation.
Anyways, this chicken, tzatziki and tomato/cucumber gyros was great for an easy dinner.
I ordered the Balancing No. 3 Charcoal mask with some product credits I had accumulated and loved it!! So glamorous : ) I’m so bad at remembering to do masks, and I’m trying hard to do this once a week. I think I need a mask day. Mask Monday?
And for sweet starry dreams, my dad got me this constellation pendant hand-painted on a shell at the Hillsborough Farmer’s market. It’s by Jen Phillips, and she has an Etsy shop here. I get lots of compliments on it!

I’m jealous! We need green grass like this here in Hong Kong, haha! 😀

Hey! Birch is adorbs. But if he is still tongue thrusting, and only likes purées (which I’m a big fan of and where we started with both my boys), he may not be ready. New recs for starting solids are 6 months at the earliest so he’s a bit in the young side! Food for thought (haha pun intended).
KathEats says
The new rec is actually 4-6 months (whenever they are showing signs in that window). He was definitely not ready at 4 months. We didn’t start offering until closer to 5.5 and now at 6 he’s doing great with purees.

Birch is still so small-I’m sure he’ll come around to textures in the next few months, or maybe not even until around his first birthday. Totally normal! I find ground oatmeal to be really gritty no matter what. You could try adding extra liquid to quick oats and cooking it longer which makes it super soft (though it still has some texture). Anyway, Birch has lots of time to explore foods so I hope you don’t worry too much. You do such a great job of providing variety and exposure to foods that he’ll learn to love lots of things-eventually!

It’s been years (19) actually but I always srartedvwith bananas and broccoli. I made my own very liquid purées. Does he like fruit? He is so precious. I am enjoying watching him grow. It is not green in Canada!

Yes he’s very much into fruit! He spit out peas. It’s still early though so I’m not too worried : )

My son did better with solids if I mixed in some breast milk. It thins it out and adds a familiar flavor. Maybe worth a shot?
About the gyros — have you ever seen this video about not being able to pronounce “gyro” by Jimmy Fallon and Luke Bryan? It’s so funny! (and they say the real pronunciation at the end!) https://youtu.be/P9QOYYq3GkE
KathEats says
THAT WAS AMAZING!!! I love Luke Bryan. And the “hoomas” at the end made me snort my coffee!
Anna says
It’s yee-roh! I never knew until I started dating my fiancé 7 years ago – he worked at a Greek restaurant in college so I trusted his pronunciation!
Alex says
Definitely YEE-ro. We lived in Greece for a year and ate A LOT of gyros.
Melissa says
The smoothies look and sound great; so refreshing this time of year! Also, that necklace is beautiful!

The sweet potato and lentil salad looks amazing! I just recently found your site and already have so many new meals to add to my repertoire. I have a little one of my own, it is almost definitely just the texture that is unpleasant to Birch, he will come around soon!
Thank you again for the awesome content!
Cheers,

This website was a huge help to me as I transitioned my daughter to food! (I was totally overwhelmed by all the “methods” out there. This just seemed easy and straightforward.) This woman knows her stuff; tons of great ideas! We did a lot of graham crackers, puffs, town house crackers to get her used to texture. Warning: You will go down a rabbit hole of amazing information on this site. 🙂

After listening to the Coffee + Crumbs podcast episode on Self Care, I’ve adopted Ashley’s “Sunday Face” routine and do a mask on those nights. For some reason, “Sunday Face” is catchy enough to remind me to do it.

Just wanted to share a favorite puree I’ve been making for my 9 month old which he loves! I steam frozen berries and a fresh peach and then blend it in the Vitamix with cooked quinoa and add some of the steaming water to the mix until I get it thinned out to the consistency I want. I feed him with a spoon or put it in a resealable pouch. He liked it so much the first time I made it and had him taste test it, he was crying for more!
KathEats says
Awesome! I’m about to enter the homemade purée stage 🙂
