I’m starting a new monthly (or perhaps bimonthly!) series called the 12 Months of Real Food. Let’s shower our favorite foods with love!
May is strawberries! They are so amazing right now. Our family needs to get out strawberry picking before the season is over. Their color is a great indicator of how nutritious they are, as they’re packed with phytonutrients. Here’s a nice little graphic I made that sums up one of my favorite summer fruits : )
In honor of this delicious fruit, here’s a round up of some epic strawberry recipes!
Peanut Butter Strawberry Banana Quesadillas
Fresh Strawberry Basil Quinoa Salad With Goat Cheese, Sunflower Seeds & Lemon Vinaigrette
Strawberry Balsamic Pizza With Chicken

And from yours truly 🙂

Nothing screams summer more to me than STRAWBERRIES! My fave strawberry recipe is quite simple: Freeze a can of coconut milk, scrape and whip up the coconut milk after being in the fridge overnight so that it looks like whip cream and dollop on strawberries! Simple is ALWAYS better!

What an AWESOME idea for a series! I love learning about specific foods (especially when they are in season and I’m trying to find new ways to use them). Also, that round up of recipes is phenomenal. So many choices to explore! Can’t wait for June (and really, really hoping for a monthly post)!
Linda @ Thefitty says
Oh wow, it’s a strawberry mania!
Hannah @ eat, drink and save money says
Only two days before they lose phytonutrients? That’s crazy! I tend to freeze mine at about day 3. I’m assuming freezing helps keep nutrients, right?
I don’t do much as far as recipes, we eat ours plain or with Greek yogurt or in oatmeal. Any that I freeze go into smoothies. I really should start branching out more with recipes though! All of these look so good. This will be a great series!

Your blog has been displaying very strangely for me for a couple of days. Tiiiiiny font and photos and footer with a normal-szied header. All other sites work fine except yours! I’m in Google Chrome. Just sharing in case someone can help you out!

Strange! I’ll pass this along – thank you.
Oh, and if you could send a screen shot that would be very helpful! To Katheats at gmail dot com.

Hey Kath, What’s your feeling on organic vs. conventional strawberries? I’m always afraid of conventional but the organic ones are hard to find (and expensive).
KathEats says
I always opt for organic if I have a choice. I get local ones at the market as long as I can. Not sure if those are organic or not….
Melissa says
Yum! Strawberries really are great this time of year. There’s nothing better than refreshing strawberries in the summer as a snack!

I loved this post! And I think your nutrition graphic is great. It has a lot of information but not so much that it’s hard to read at a glance and the design looks nice too.
I was thinking it looks like a bookmark and you could make one of these “nutrition” bookmarks for each month and they’d be handy. Since they’d all be food related people could use them as bookmarks for cookbooks or something. I know I have pages I want to go back to often in my cookbooks and I don’t like folding the corners in.

So much great strawberry inspiration here, thanks!

That pizza looks delicious! I had a pizza special last week at The Root Cellar in Chapel Hill that had strawberries, prosciutto, arugula, and brie on it. AMAZING. I would’ve never thought to put strawberries on pizza, but now I’m hooked.
