When I was in college there was a semester my junior year when I didn’t have class until 11:30am. As a result, I slept in – getting 9-10 hours of sleep each night.
Ironically, I could not keep my eyes open come mid-afternoon and I felt even more tired than I used to! Finally I decided I was wasting too much time sleeping and set an alarm clock for 8.5 hours max. And all of a sudden I felt like my old self again. I was perky and energized all afternoon.
I’m telling you this because I think there is most definitely such a thing as too much sleep! It’s hard to realize because you feel tired, but for me, getting more than 8.5 hours is not ideal! And the past few nights I think I have gotten too much. I have felt so tired in the afternoons, yet I’ve slept plenty of hours. Time to set an alarm again!
I also had a raging headache last night – I think those few days of coffee got me BACK on caffeine!
Breakfast rocked!!
Eggy chia seed OIAJ.
I think this jar has been heated in water way too many times!
The Coconut Butter Mix
- 1/3 cup oats, milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 1/2 banana
- Pinch salt
- Splash vanilla
- 1/2 egg (half because I made a double pot with Matt), whisked in at end of cooking
- Toppings: Ambrosial orange granola (CHEW!), Grandma Candy’s Black Cap Jam, coconut butter residue, Sunflower butter ( <—couldn’t resist! I haven’t had a good drippy nut butter in days)
Chai tea + peppermint tea. Mixing is my new thing!
Have a great day!
Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday says
I’m optimum on 9 hours of sleep.
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
Good idea to mix tea! Never thought of it!!
Freya (Brit Chick Runs) says
I totally agree re sleep – I work best on 8hours. 7 and I’m ok but not for too many days…and 9hours is just waaaay too much!
LOL at that jar! It looks loved 🙂
Laura Jane @ Recovering Chocoholic says
I have huge, huge problems with becoming ridiculously tired in the afternoons, as in a I honestly can’t keep my eyes open. Sometimes it happens no matter what I do, but I’ve found the best remedy is a consistent sleep schedule. That means getting roughly the same amount of sleep each night, going to bed at a similar time, and waking up at a similar time. Sleeping in on the weekends is not good for me. However, it’s a bit difficult in real life to maintain a consistent sleep schedule, but I do my best.
Stacy @ Every Little Thing says
I definitely believe in too much sleep! Sometimes it’s so hard to not sleep in when I’m able to though. I function best at 7 hours of sleep but sometimes the day at work makes me so tired, I go to bed TOO early and then get closer to 8-9. I always wake up groggy!
Lisa Fine says
I’m totally with you. I find that when I get 7-8 hours of sleep, it’s perfect. More or less than that, and I feel groggy all day [though if I sleep less than 7 hours, I also feel extremely hungry and yuck all day too].
I love mixing tea. I’ve been thinking of trying a peppermint/lavendar mix this weekend to change things up. Have a great day, Kath.
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
Hahah! I reuse my jars all the time.. and they totally look like that too!
Jackie @ Baking Charms says
I’m definitely guilty of getting too much sleep on the weekends. After I do that, Monday is always exhausting!
Marisa @ Loser for Life says
I think you’re right about the sleep thing, Kath! If I get too much, I’m definitely more lethargic! I like 9 hours and I’m golden 🙂
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
I totally agree about the too much sleep thing. I’ve noticed a big difference if I sleep in an hour or actually get up when I first naturally wake up.
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I agree, it’s definitely possible to get too much sleep! having said that though, I feel like I could do with some more this week. Ideally, I think I function best on 8 hours, and maybe 1-2 more on the weekends. Have a fabulous day Kath!
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
I’m the same way — when I get too much sleep it is almost worse (for me) than getting too little sleep. I hate feeling like I am just dragging along.
staceyhealthylife says
I agree about too much sleep, it just leaved ya drained.
Allison says
It’s been so weird lately for me with the whole “too much sleep” deal as well. I am a student and right now exams are at all different times and find that if I am not studying, I’m sleeping! Naps are here and there plus over 9 hrs at night! It’s funny to think I need a nap when before this crazy, ‘off’ week I would go to bed between 10-11, wake up at 6:30 and be on the go with exercise ALL day.
I’m ready to quit these naps and get back to a routine 🙂
I think the abnormal cold, cloudy weather contributes here in TN.
faith @ lovelyascharged says
I definitely experience the same thing when I sleep too much. I give myself an extra hour or so on the weekends, but I try to avoid any massive sleep-in unless I’m ill so that I don’t get the dreaded sleep hangover!
Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey says
Too much sleep?!?! Say it ain’t so! 😛
(Of course, this is coming from someone who is *lucky* to get 6 hrs/night. I get by on 6 – but 5 hours (which sometimes happens) just about kills me. That is definitely my minimum!).
Sunday is my only day of the week to sleep in, which now means 8:30 or so (oh, the days when sleeping it meant until 11:30 am or noon! *sigh*). I love my sleep – and don’t get near enough.
Consider yourself lucky that you can choose how much rest you get! 🙂
~
Miranda @ Working Mom Works Out says
I’m the exact same way when I get too much sleep. I need between 7.5-8.5 hours. Any more than that and I’m lethargic the rest of the day.
Breakfast looks incredible. Oats never disappoint me.
Hope you have a lovely Friday!
Amanda- The Nutritionist Reviews says
I’ve never tried eggs in oats. Can you taste the egg at all?
KathEats says
Not really.
Cara @ EAT. PRAY. RUN. says
I have a prob sleeping a full 8 hours…my body likes to hop up after 7 or 7.5…maybe the fact that I wake up thinking about breakfast is to blame?! Anywho love the eggs in your oats idea. Hope you have a great weekend!
maria says
I think ive been sleeping too much lately, too. It’s hard to get up in the mornings and I crash midafternoon. Gonna try cutting to 8 hours and see how that feels.
Kristi @ KristiAteIt says
I always get made fun of because I REQUIRE 8 hours of sleep each night or I can’t function! I know what you mean about getting too much though, what a groggy feeling!
I had almost the same breakfast this morning. Mmmmm! Except the egg. I’ve been meaning to try that…
KathEats says
Well I totally require 8 too!! But not more than 8.5 🙂
Michelle (The Runner's Plate) says
I don’t know if I have ever experienced too much sleep.
I shoot for 8 hours of sleep, but if I am running a lot, I try to get closer to 9 hours.
Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing says
Just about anything in a coconut butter jar is an automatic win 🙂
Khushboo says
Best use of that jar- it’s all about the eggy oats! I agree on the sleep issue! 7-8 hours is my max, anymore and it tires me!
Tori (Fresh Fruition) says
I just had OOIAJ, too! And yum, I never thought to use two different tea bags before.
Dmarie says
breakfast in a jar…gotta love it!
SquatLikeALady says
Good point! So many people don’t realize that they’re fatigued because they’re sleeping too much. I’m at my best with anywhere from 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night — any more than that and I’m a zombie.
Marina says
Love breakfasts in a jar!
You are right, sleeping longer makes me more tired as well!
But I can’t sleep longer then 7 hours, and actually ,sometimes I would love to just sleep more. And be little less tired 🙂
Katherina @ Zephyr Runs says
I love blending teas! It comes from working in a teahouse, I’m sure, but tea-cocktails are one of my favorite things to do with tea. Peppermint and chai sounds really good 🙂 One of my favorite blends is chamomile, peppermint and rooibos – delicious!!
Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) says
I used to get so much sleep. Like 8-10 hours a night. Then I became a mom, work FT, support my family, workout, run my blog…and I get about 5 hrs a night. Usually all strung together 🙂 Sometimes not. 2 + 3 type of thing. That’s not ideal. But it’s amazing that I went from 9 hrs to 5 hrs and altho I would prefer more, I am making it work. As I always say, I’ll sleep when Im dead but for now, there’s ABCs to learn and work to do and blog posts to write so sleep….well….it’ll happen one day 🙂
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
Totally agree with you on the too much sleep thing. I need about 6-7 hours. More or less and I am a total zombie.
Angel7 says
I can relate about sleeping too much! However, it is nice to sleep in on occasion!
http://faithfulsolutions.blogspot.com/
Lea @ Healthy Coconut says
I feel the same way about having too much sleep. I don’t feel energize when I wake up and end up feeling lethargic all day…which is fine if I’m on vacation and just plan on being at the pool every day.
I put almond milk or soy milk in my tea…to create a tea latte 🙂
Salah@myhealthiestlifestyle says
those Eggy OIAJ sound amazing! Definitely wanting to try that but with my quinoa flakes instead!
Chelsea says
I agree, to much sleep leaves me feeling worse all day! Yummy looking OIAJ…I mean ECS-OIAJ!
Laura says
Chai and peppermint is an interesting tea mix! I’m going to have to try that with some of the loose tea I have. I’m a big tea fan, so I would advocate keeping at it! And I agree with many of the others. Consistent sleep patterns help a lot!
Kate (What Kate is Cooking) says
I usually get 7 hours of sleep, but 8 is ideal. I can’t sleep in no matter what, so unless I go to bed super early, I can’t sleep for too long!
Haleigh says
I don’t think I could ever sleep too much. I always wake up after 8 hours of sleep, no alarm needed. Although, it’s nice to sleep in every once in awhile!
Greta says
My theory is that if you give your body an inch, it tries to take a mile! I find that if I let myself relax and sleep in a bit, my body automatically tries to make up for lost sleep time come the afternoon…
Jess (Sweet Potato) says
Too much sleep definitely effects me as well! I feel more tired than I would if I had only a couple hours!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Coconut butter OIAJ.. I can’t imagine how good that must be!
Baking 'n' Books says
That what I was thinking…:)
And I love mixing teas. With a scoop of hot chocolate thrown in too…;)
Katherine says
I mix my tea all the time! It gives you room to play with the flavors and create something new 🙂 I love it.
(FYI I am doing a Stevivia giveaway on my blog if you want to get in on it 😀 )
Lenna says
Yes, there is a lot of buzz about too little of a sleep, but no one speaks about getting too much of it. When I sleep more than usual, I am pretty tired and get terible headaches! And I also always feel like I am wasting my time away 🙂
Grace @ Healthy Dreaming says
Too much sleep makes me more tired! Have a great week!
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
I definitely know that feeling! If I sleep more than 9 hours, I feel groggy all day. I think it’s much better to get in 7-8 hours and then leave time for an hour nap during the day if it’s really needed.
Love the tea mix – awesome idea!
Alexa @ Simple Eats says
This is definitely me! I used to sleep way too much and as much as I hated peeling myself out of bed earlier, it definitely makes a difference in my energy levels!
Katherine: Unemployed says
eggy! I’m not so sure about that but sounds good if there is sleep involved
lynn @ the actor's diet says
after 3 weeks of sleeping less han 4 hours a night and working 14 hour days, i thought that sleeping more than 8 hours would be wonderful. it kinda is, but i’m more tired than i was when i was shooting my movie!
Sarah@The Flying ONION says
I am back on the coffee thing this past week. The weather was so gloomy, wet and cold, that I simply wanted a hot cup of nutty, roasted coffee. It was delightful. 😀
But I know come summer, I’ll be wanting good ol’ iced tea with just a hint of agave once again. 😀
Lauren says
I agree! I always seem to be more tired on the nights when I have more sleep than less sleep.
caitlin says
i swear I run better on less sleep than more sleep. If I get to much, I’m a lazy bum the whole next day. Strange how that works huh?
Melissa says
I want to live in that jar!!!
birdie to be says
This looks so good right now! And I love the mixing tea idea! So clever!
Gena says
Excess sleep always makes me miserable. Have a wide-awake day, friend!
Hope says
I never get enough sleep. I am constantly feeling tired. I love the weekends though because I finally get a chance to sleep in and catch up! I’m so excited to catch up on my sleep tonight 🙂
Justeen @ Blissful Baking says
I feel the same way, 8-9 hours is way too much sleep for me. I’m at my peak after getting no more than 7 hours a night!
Johanna B says
I used to be a late sleeper. I’d stay in bed for as long as I could. Now I get between 6 and 7 hours and I’m in such a better place physically and emotionally. I agree – one can sleep too much.
Cait's Plate says
I’m with you on that. Whenever I get too much sleep it’s never a good thing. I wake up headachey, disoriented and MORE tired than I was when I got less sleep. There seems to be a magical number of everyone and if you get any more or any less of that you’re screwed! So frustrating!
Breakfast looks delish though – hope it helped you feel better 🙂
Anne @ Baking Me says
Ooh chai and peppermint, that sounds good!
Jil @ Big City, Lil Kitchen says
I totally agree with you – unless I’m sick and my body absolutely *neeeeds* the extra rest – I always end up feeling tired, or at least sluggish, if I sleep too much. Oh, and the OIAJ look amaaazing.
erica says
i totally agree. 8 hours is my magic sleep number. unfortunately i only seem to get about 6.
Kristin @ STUFT Mama says
Um, yum! LOVE eggs in oatmeal. 🙂 Happy Friday! Sleep- I miss you. Since starting this blogging thing I haven’t gotten to bed at a decent hour. Ugh. Thanks for keeping me inspired!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I dont know, I LOVE sleep. It always does me good, whether it is 8 or 11 hours 🙂
Melissa @ Journey to Marvelous says
I agree Kath…there is such a thing as too much sleep! I often feel tired when I get more than 8 hours also. And even though afternoon naps are decadent, I try to avoid them…it messes up my sleep schedule and makes me more tired!
McKayla @ Green Groats says
I love to mix tea too! I usually start with just one, then add in another kind for my second cup! I’m super sleepy right now, but it most certainly from a lack of sleep…it’s gonna be an early Friday night for me.
Mary says
VERY cute mug – where did you find it?
KathEats says
it was a gift from my dietetic internship!
olivewineandfood says
i definitely think there is such a think as too much sleep. i always feel foggy when i get too much. but sometimes you just need 10 hours of sleep! if i’m tired i will keep on sleeping as long as my schedule allows. if i’m not tired anymore i will wake up. usually.
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I’ve never had oats in a coconut jar before! It’s taking me so long to get through my jar of coconut butter because I just don’t like it as much as my other nut butters. 😛
Kat @ Cupcake Kat says
Mixing teas. That’s such a great idea!
Hannah says
I completely agree with you that oversleeping can make you feel groggy. Unfortunately, I’m rotten at sleeping so getting too much is a rare event!
Diana @ frontyardfoodie says
I HATE too much sleep. I used to have sleeping issues and I thought maybe if I slept later I’d get more sleep and that made it much worse. I am now officially a morning person after a few years of getting up around 6 or 7.
