Whether or not ‘Happy Birthday’ is spoken today, there is a good reason to celebrate this last day of August:
Happy 5 Year Anniversary KERF!
This blog started as a weight loss food journal called Sweat Eat Sleep Repeat on August 31, 2007. I was freshly married, working in public relations and just beginning to learn more about good nutrition and eating habits. I never [ever] could have imagined what it would become!
Five years of daily meals? I still can’t believe it myself. What’s even cooler is that if I want to know what I did on any given day in that time period, I can find out within seconds. It’s a very handy tool!
I’m not quite sure what’s coming next. I will most definitely be blogging about food and life, but I’m not sure how much my daily format will change. I’ll likely drop down to 1-2 posts a day for a while, but my organized self prefers the simplicity of 3 meals a day, so hopefully I’ll get back to that as time allows.
I imagine my meals will become more parts and less wholes. What I mean is – instead of an elaborate meal all in one bowl, I’ll probably eat more ingredients one-by-one (because whenever I’m busy I tend to do that more): yogurt, whole fruit, toast, egg.
KERF has always been a reflection of my life – through a full-time job, going back to school, my internship, traveling, moving, opening the bakery, settling down as a full-time blogger (x2) and pregnancy, so I hope this next phase of motherhood will be just as exciting to watch unfold.
While at times it can be incredibly overwhelming, blogging is truly a joy to do every day, and I have each and every one of you to thank for your loyalty, comments, friendship and enthusiasm!

I wanted breakfast today to be quick and easy and enjoyed it reading in bed!
Nature’s Path Flax Raisin Bran cereal with a white peach, more raisins, sunflower butter, milk, half a tiny banana and a white peach.
I had a conversation with the peaches guy at the market on Wednesday about white verses yellow. His whites were sweeter but the yellows had more flavor. I got a couple of each to try and decided today that I much prefer yellow! The white definitely lacked the tart flavor I love so much about peaches.
Sippin’ on the raspberry leaf!
Here’s to five more years!?
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
Happy 5th! Wouldn’t it be cool of today was the baby’s birthday too? Not thy you aren’t already hoping for that. Lol!
I agree with you on the peaches. I’m all about the bigger yellow flavor. Especially grilled!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
I didn’t know the birth story of KERF – 5 years of blogging is a huge accomplishment!

Marya says
Hi Kath,
Just last night I changed the header of my blog to raspberries that look exactly like the raspberries you used five years ago. I did a double take. Maybe it’s a good omen.
Congrats on five years!
Here’s hoping you get a special delivery today.

Happy Anniversary!! 5 years is quite an accomplishment 🙂 I don’t comment often, but I’ve so enjoyed following along with you on your life adventures. Looking forward to the next chapter 🙂
(…Also, I TOTALLY agree with you about the peaches, white ones just don’t have the same yummy zing as the yellows!)
NurseJulie says
Happy anniversary Kath! I truly love reading your blog every day (for over a year now!), and wish you the best of luck with your baby! Can’t wait to read about it, my husband and I are thinking about trying soon. We’ve been together for 10 years, married for 6, so it’s a hard decision for us. A lot of people don’t understand that it’s just been me and him for so long!
Again, thank you for allowing us to be “part” of your life, I know that I relate to you in many ways!
Patricia says
I have been reading your blog since Thanksgiving 2007. I really appreciate all the hard work you put in. Cheers!!!

KathEats says

Sara says
Happy 5!
Amy Wiginton says
Happy Anniversary!!! You guys eat a ton of fruit too…what do you do about fruit flies?
KathEats says
They are minimal for the most part, but if I see one sometime s I eat all the fruit or put it on the fridge and deprive them for a day or so. Ours are worst in the fall when I keep a jar of vinegar out to trap them
Allie says
Yay Kerfiversary!!
I do have a question for you Kath: since you eat so well and lots of fresh veggies and fruits (although veggies don’t appeal to you all the time pregz), how do you find a way to keep everything fresh and delicious and well-stocked? Do you have to go to the grocery store like every 2 days? I always find that I come home from the grocery store with a fridge packed with fruits and veggies and they’re either gone in 2 days, or they go bad. Any words from the wise?
KathEats says
I usually go to the store once a week, although in the summer with multiple markets and a garden I’m much more sporadic. I don’t have too much trouble with food going bad, although I used to have more. I wonder if it’s a quality thing? I used to shop at Harris Teeter where the produce wasn’t as fresh as it is at Whole Foods. I wonder if you tried a different grocery store for a week if you’d see a difference?
Angel7 says
Happy Anniversary, KERF! I am sure you have inspired a lot of people!
The baby still has time to come on KERF-iversary 🙂
I have never had white peaches before. I had white nectarines, though, & love them!

Congratulations on all of your accomplishments along the way, and I wish you all the best with your baby boy!! I have only commented on your blog maybe 2 times, but I have been reading it since the beginning of 2008. Sharing your journey about going back to school to begin a whole new career helped inspire me to do the same, so I just wanted to thank you for being so open about your life with so many others. When I have my first child in the next couple of years, I will definitely reread your BERF posts. They are so informative! Congrats again!! 🙂

Hi Kath! Congrats! I’ve been a reader since 2008 (right after I had my 2nd baby) when I found you through Sparkpeople where they highlighted your wonderful oatmeal-cookin’ ways. I’ve been a loyal reader since and have loved following along on your adventures. One of my favorites was your trip to Africa! Looking forward to following you on this next “chapter” as you await the birth of BabyKERF. 🙂

Averie @ Averie Cooks says
Congrats on 5 years, Kath! It’s quite a milestone to post at least daily for 5 years, and most of those years 3x a day! Truly inspirational right there. Until someone even tries to blog and take pics of their food, life, etc ONCE a day, no one could even imagine what 3x a day is. For about 18 mos I was doing 2 posts a day and couldn’t keep up. You amaze me and congrats!

I went 10 days “overdue” with my 2nd (but I think my due was just wrong because he was only 7lb 14oz when he was born – not huge like most overdue babes) what finally did the trick was bowling. Hit up a lane tonight? But then again…. at 41w3d, anything is likely to break the seal! 😀
Good luck! Try the EPO the “other” way right before bed tonight so it dissolves on the cervix. I bet you’ll have a Labor Day baby!
Anna says
Congrats/Happy Blog Day!!
P.S… You know you’re a devoted reader when you have a dream about the blog author posting that she had her baby… Yup… That happened last night. Haha! I’ve never had any prophecy dreams before, but maybe this will be my first.. 🙂
Susan says
Happy Anniversary! My college-aged daughter told me about your blog a couple years ago and I’ve been enjoying it ever since. You make eating healthy easy and flavorful. And even though I’ve never met you and don’t know you personally, I feel like I’m about to be a first time grandma! I know that sounds a little nuts (well maybe a more than a “little” nuts) 🙂 but I wish you an easy delivery and lots of happy days to come. I can’t wait to meet him! Hope it’s soon.

Another long time reader… since 2008. Sending lots of baby dust your way!!

I found your blog a while back when I was trying to get tips for diversifying my boring oatmeal. Needless to say my breakfasts have vastly improved, my husband LOVES overnight oats, and all in all I feel like my family is eating even better than we were before. I’ve always known the importance of breakfast, but know I also enjoy it with a bit of passion added in. 🙂 I feel like I’m actually eating more in the mornings, but I’ve actually been losing weight. Totally unintentional, but welcome after having my 2nd baby. 😉 I now keep up with you regularly and enjoy each and every blog post. Congrats on the big 5, and good luck with your soon to arrive, new addition! It’s the most beautiful and amazing experience a woman can have and hope it goes smoothly for you!

I certainly hope 5 more years are in the mix! You have been so successful with this blogging scene, and really are an inspiration to those of us that are just starting to dip our toes into blog world! I have been working on mine for almost three years now but have only just found a rhythm of posting once a day, and it is usually not about what we did specifically on that day: it’s a recapping of events of our travels, Cambodia, Thailand, Korea, and it is working thus far. I hope to one day be able to post everyday like you do;) As your life changes, so does your blog~ and I think there is such beauty in that!
Julie says
Happy Anniversary! Kath, you are an inspiration! I have been following you for over a year now and I am so impressed with your ability to be so consistent. I am so excited to see you become a mom! Enjoy it all! Thank you for your honesty and sharing your healthy attitude towards real food!!
Jennifer says
That is just amazing that you’ve been able to do this every day for five years. I’m sure you’ve had days where you just did not feel like writing anything but you did.
Congratulations on five years! Just curious, but at what point did you decide to change the blog’s name to KERF?
Jen says
Happy Anniversary! I didn’t know you had a different blog name – When did you officially change to the KERF name?
And 3x/day – that’s a lot! Although I guess it’s your job so you have the time to do it. You really seem to read and answer a lot of your readers’ comments though – are you constantly on the computer? I don’t know how’d you keep up otherwise between your posts, comments, twitter and other projects otherwise.

Yes, and mobile. Answering this from my tablet from bed!
